Stu J's long awaited sophomore single release is here; Destination Unknown.
After releasing his first single as a solo artist, We Love The Moonlight, at the end of 2020, Stu spent the bulk of 2021 learning the ropes of musical production using Ableton Live.
With a busy schedule of regular live gigs around Auckland and co-managing his yoga studio in Northwest, Stu made steady progress in understanding the ins and outs of production; finding sounds to suit his preferred style, recording live instruments and vocals, mixing and EQing every aspect of the song and putting everything together as a finished package.
On the production side, his learning was fast-tracked with the support of the highly regarded producer and musician, Ant Tarrant. Plenty of tips and tricks were shared, ideas bounced and a lot of what’s finished today would not have been possible without him.
The main chords and melody for Destination Unknown was first inspired by a friendly connection that Stu hoped could have been more, but the path it was heading in wasn’t clear and ultimately didn’t eventuate to anything. Stu also took inspiration from an artist friend of his; in Stu’s bedroom is an image of a mushroom, shaped like a UFO sucking up a human into space. A fun, playful piece of art which was titled, ‘Destination Unknown’.
In the bridge, just before the last chorus, you’ll hear an instrumental breakdown of synthesisers and bass, charging up the batteries for a big final chorus. This bridge section is an important piece to the song, as this electro-house is a style Stu wants to pursue further along with his indie-dance / electronic-pop songs.
