Following the release of Silas Futura’s debut EP Pluto last year, the gifted Auckland creative now drops an out of this world science fiction short – a visually stellar and complimentary bookend to wrap up the narrative he first introduced with the release of Pluto.
Although this visual portrayal follows several months after the release of the EP, Silas and Tyler Hinde, a close friend and collaborator, had been working this labour of love behind the scenes for over a year. With Tyler illustrating each scene, separated into layers of bustling city, aliens, and humans, and Silas animating the layers, the two friends worked over zoom and google drive for the majority of 2021.
A self-confessed Sci-Fi lover, Silas began experimenting with a fictional character he created – a Plutonian based in a future where humans have populated the solar system. The result is this animated short video, beautifully structured around tracks from the EP, which tells the story of two friends who fight back against a totalitarian alien force – a conceptualisation that has been interwoven with Silas’ own personal experiences and bought to life with his music.
Although the music was always influenced by personal experiences and emotions, Futura’s Pluto EP was orchestrated to fit the aesthetic of this invented world. These stylistic choices were most prevalent in songs Lotus and Breathe where this character was illustrated through lyrics and instrumentation.
Songs Snapper ft. PollyHill, and Compulsion ft. Tei act as the score to the colourful and action-packed world of Pluto in the year 2602.

Says Silas, “Tyler and I met at Uni around 6 years ago, and have kept in touch ever since. He works in Sydney as a concept artist for major motion pictures, so we had to do the whole project over the internet. But it became pretty clear early on how professional and deep Tyler is in his work. It’s one thing to write a story of two friends fighting aliens in space, and it’s another to visually build that world. Small things like the soft round edges of the hero’s spaceship, versus the sharp edges of the enemy base. Tyler sees all of that.”
“When Silas first approached me to create a music video with him I was super excited to help bring his idea to life,” says Tyler. “I’ve been a big fan of his music since we were at uni together, and have always wanted to collaborate. Silas made working together easy. He brought such a clear vision and open mind towards what we were creating. He let me have free reign to design whatever strange world I wanted to design and then managed to beautifully animate all of the shots I bombarded him with. Not only are the tracks in the vid absolute bangers, but all of the sound effects he added on top helped make this world come to life. I’m really proud of what we managed to accomplish.”
With Pluto, Silas bought us into that imagined universe, and now with this visualisation, he expands on his fantasy world, creating a link between the present and the future. Silas Futura has landed.
