Music News - Mild Orange release new single and video, 'Oh Yeah'

Aotearoa’s wildly successful Mild Orange are basking in the glow of a long warm Kiwi summer that’s brought sold-out shows, main stage festival slots and now new music!
The four-piece (Mehrt, Jah, Barry and Jack) have today dropped Oh Yeah – a gorgeously lush and introspective track that’ll delight the steadfast ‘day ones’ and no doubt, draw in a whole bunch of new fans. The new single sets the scene for Mild Orange’s highly-anticipated third album Looking For Space, which is out on February 10.

Oh Yeah is a song “intentionally about nothing”, says the band’s Josh Mehrtens (AKA Mehrt). “In an art history paper I did at uni, there was a quote I came across… it went something like this, ‘With art, there is always meaning’. It’s stuck with me for years now. Even the decision not to have meaning has a meaning. I love this irony and found it comical that you can't escape meaning, so I wanted to write lyrics about nothing, which meant little to me at the time except just to purely feel good,” he explains.
The song is accompanied by an equally gorgeous video directed by Simon Levalois-Bazer in Biarritz, France; starring his friends Evan Lunven and Clothilde Pasquier, and shot entirely on Kodak 16mm film. Remarkably, Simon’s involvement came via a call out on Instagram for a film director. What resulted was a dreamy four minutes of film, which perfectly captures Mehrt’s lyrical sentiment.
“It's been awesome chatting with Simon on Instagram over the past few months, filling each other in on our respective moods of the world and becoming friends in the process. The sense would come together naturally in due course – ‘yeah, it's always on time’. Like the meaning behind the song, it's about something coming from seemingly nothing - it doesn't need to make sense for it to feel good. The sonic surfiness goes hand in hand with Evan and Clothilde's day in the surf town of Biarritz, and the lo-fi grit of the audio production is harmonious with the retro aesthetics in the film.”
Mild Orange are undoubtedly one of New Zealand music’s most successful exports of the last few years. Their music has resonated with fans everywhere, with streaming numbers soaring beyond 100 million; enabling them to tour their powerful live show around the globe. Back on home soil, they continue to sell out shows and prove just why their goal of making “timeless, while timely; universal, though personal; nostalgic, yet ever-evolving” music is a winning recipe.
