Music News - Hayley, Brooke & Hollie dominate year’s album sales

Hayley, Brooke & Hollie dominate year’s album sales

18 December 2007 - 0 Comments

Three Kiwi artists make the top 10 selling albums in New Zealand for 2007 - and it’s the women who have been belting out the biggest tunes.

The figures for the year aren’t yet final but heading the list is Hayley Westenra’s ‘Treasure’, the country’s top selling album based on over-the-counter and legal digital sales to December 9.

Coming in at #4 is Brooke Fraser’s second album ‘Albertine’ while Hollie Smith is at #10 with her debut recording ‘Long Player’.

Hollie’s and Brooke both made a big noise at this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

Hollie won three Tuis including Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Brooke won two awards including the Highest Selling Album Tui.

Brooke also had success in the radio airplay chart for 2007, with her single “Shadowfeet” coming in at #2, but it was Opshop’s ‘Maybe’ from their album ‘Second Hand Planet’ that took the radio airplay chart song of the year accolade. Opshop - winner of the People’s Choice award - and Brooke are the only Kiwis to crack the top 10 as far as radio airplay is concerned.

Top selling single to December 9 is ‘Umbrella’ from Rihanna featuring JayZ while the Kiwi group Atlas comes in at #6 with the debut single ‘Crawl’. Just missing out on the top 10 is Opshop’s ‘Maybe’ at #11.

‘Now That’s What I call Music 23’ heads the compilation list while Andre Rieu’s ‘New York Memories: Live at Radio City’ is the year’s top-selling DVD so far.

2007 saw the inclusion of digital downloads on the Official New Zealand Music Charts from New Zealand’s legal, digital music retailers. The charts now represent the full spectrum of New Zealand music sales.

The final results for 2007 will be available early in the new year and will include all Christmas sales.

The figures are compiled by Media Sauce Ltd. for the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) which has just released The Official Chart sales data to December 9.
