Announcing FromThePit 2022 Music Photography Exhibition

08 April 2022 - 0 Comments

FromThePit is New Zealand’s longest running music photography exhibition celebrating the creative works of some of New Zealand’s best music photographers. This year sees 50 photographers from across the country capturing epic memories of local talent.

We are pleased to announce that the digital exhibition will be shown on selected screens, including those in The Rockshop, starting May 2nd. A music soundtrack has been supplied by Kiwi talents Kendall Elise, Rodney Fisher and up and coming artist Venice.

Events have been few and far between over the past year, with only photos to look back on. “I like being a music photographer because it lets me capture and share people's spotlight moments, as well as document moments in history” says Matthew Clode director of Below NZ.

Before Covid, each weekend across the country photographers were hustled in their photo pits as crowds filled hundreds of our iconic venues, excited to capture the perfect moment. “We’re telling a story about the evening in images that makes someone that wasn’t there feel like they were.” says photographer and videographer Chris Morgan of Morgan Creative.

It’s not just photographers currently missing those magical on-stage moments - the artists they work so closely with are feeling the pain too. Villainy frontman, Neill Fraser, says "Every time we play a show or tour we always make sure we have a photographer on the team to capture it. Getting those split second moments of performance is vital to have a record of what happened and being able to share that with the world. Most of the time you don't even know they're there but they're the ones ensure the show can live on long after"

FromThePit is proud to share images from recent moments passed as we plan for events in the future. “This year’s music photography exhibition features rare moments of musical celebration taken over the last two years, during a time when the whole industry has been struggling” says curator Dave Simpson. “They offer a glimpse into what we’ve been missing and for what, we hope, is soon to return”

FromThePit is provided in partnership with Auckland UNESCO City of Music, NZ Music Month, Independent Music NZ (IMNZ) and the New Zealand Music Commission, and others to be announced soon.
