"Did you ever discover, just where we'd be, if I was ever to give you everything?" opens New Zealander Tom Lee-Richards' hypnotic and lyrically immediate track What's Left to Be, the second single from the upcoming EP Spinning for Shape. Surging with waves of tense instrumentation as well as tender lyrical admissions the new single follows the underwater theme of the first single and music video Human premiered by 'Where the Music Meets' Portugal.
With a drum groove (Pedro Hamdan) that is both relentless and boldly broken, What's Left to Be is constantly searching for equilibrium. Together with oscillating synth (Felipe D'Angelo) and grinding, descending French Horn lines (Fabio Ogata), the unusual instrumentation reflects Tom's inspiration for the song which he describes as "The tension in a new relationship between being self sufficient and self contained and revealing yourself and your vulnerabilities". In a small moment of resolution Tom's lyrics begin to suggest that he is letting that love in.
The EP Spinning for Shape was recorded with acclaimed producer Leonardo Marques in Belo Horizonte, Brazil at the beginning of the pandemic. After reconnecting again with roots in New Zealand Tom has recently returned to Belo Horizonte to begin more musical projects. Humbly inspired by his mother's surreal oil paintings, the visualiser music video for this new song features Tom's own pastel sketches, his first time creating visual art to accompany music.
