Fur Patrol guitarist Steve Wells releases cinematic single 'Makeshift Heart'

06 May 2022 - 0 Comments

Best known as the guitarist in platinum-selling NZ group Fur Patrol, Steve Wells is stepping further into the solo spotlight, releasing spacial-electro, cinematic track, Makeshift Heart.

Makeshift Heart is the first single to be released from Steve’s upcoming album Songs For Summer Rain - due to be released in June. The Paris-based multi-disciplinary artist originally wrote Makeshift Heart as a cinematic instrumental during a lockdown. The lyrics came while reflecting on current affairs and the mental strain of it all.

“The song was pieced together around my photography work, organising a wedding, and being in lockdown with a young child,” recalls Steve. “Sonically, it’s one of my favourite productions - and emotionally, I love the dark moody vibe. It beautifully captures the headspace and heart-space I was in at the time. I also think it captures all the elements of the album in one song.”

Makeshift Heart has slow, lingering melodies and an almost trip-hop feel to it. The vocals are detuned, which came from Steve’s desire to disguise his voice - being the first vocals he recorded for the album. He says that, over the course of the album, he found the confidence he needed to record the other songs without relying on disguising his voice.

Steve Wells’ upcoming album Songs For Summer Rain has sweeping, lush production and sonic soundscapes. It is a brooding, cinematic album, sprinkled with glimmers of hope. Inspired by the dramatic landscapes of his African childhood (having grown up in Zambia), mixed with months of covid lockdowns - the self-produced album is something the artist says he’s more than proud of - so be sure to stay tuned for more from Steve Wells.

In 2007 Steve Wells took a break from music (including selling all his guitars!) to pursue life as a photographer - famously taking a portrait of Former Libertines and Baby Shambles lead singer Pete Doherty eating syringes. In 2017 he returned to music as a composer-collaborator for film scores and electro tracks in duo Super8Sonic. Like so many creatives, 2020 brought its challenges, but it also inspired Steve to write, produce and release his debut EP, the electro-dance Poolside - and sparked a continuation of solo creativity.
