Tāmaki Makarau based noise-merchants Nuggiez announce the release of their latest single U Against U, which is available now on all streaming services. The track is the second single to be released from the group’s second album which is due for release in the coming months.
U Against U is a righteously upbeat and earnest punk anthem that trips its way through psychedelia and brooding post-punk flavours, propelled forward by a pulsating off-kilter rhythm. The song touches on themes of alienation, anxiety and trauma driven by social conditioning under late capitalism, a situation where you are routinely pitted against yourself.
Inspired by the likes of Gang of Four and The Beatles (as well as a knowing nod to a particular DC hardcore band), it sees a more experimental side of the punk quartet with reverse tape delays and swirling rhythms; conjuring up a sense of disorientation with a nostalgic flavour, fitting for the social-psychogenic subject matter.
The lyrics detail how systemic failure in a society can massively impact mental health in individuals. Says vocalist Drew McCormack on the lyrical content; “The way I see it, capitalism defends itself from reform by individualising all responsibility for systemic failure and the resulting harm it causes - which is a cruel and alienating form of gaslighting.”
U Against U is now available on all streaming services, and on Bandcamp.
