Skeptical is the first captivating single + video release from Aotearoa artist Blake’s upcoming EP.
A soulful, upbeat track with an anthemic feminist vibe to it, perfectly fitted to be blasted in the car or chanted with a group of friends on a night out or at a festival. The verses are instrumentally reserved to add dynamic to the song and aid the vulnerability expressed within the lyrics. The chorus has an upbeat groove, driven by bass and drums, layered with relatable lyrics.
“The song pertains to the notion of experiencing false starts in relationships and enduring many instances of 'all talk no action'. The overall theme of the song is being skeptical to love and learning to not always take things at face value. That the proof of a person's intentions lies in their actions,” says Blake. "All songs on the EP are based around navigating dating as a female in your 20s, including some of the unexpected situations you find yourself in along the way."
Sonically, this project blends different elements across Soul, Electronic and Alternative music, formatted into digestible pop structures, with the lead vocal taking center stage.
Skeptical is already a track that has travelled well, even before release. It was recorded and produced at Harry Charles's home studio on the North Shore, Auckland, before being mixed in the UK by Lee Smith (Holly Humberstone) and mastered in Germany by Grammy-nominated engineer Robin Schmidt.
The video for Skeptical is equally as breathtaking as the single, featuring lush locations in the South Island, such as the Routeburn Track and Moke Lake.
Hailing from Queenstown New Zealand, Blake has spent the past five years in the UK honing her craft and immersing herself in the rich London Neo-Soul and Jazz scene. During her time in London, she was sought out by some of the UK’s top drum and bass producers to write and record vocals in the genre. She was nominated for ‘Best Vocalist’ at the 2017 Drum and Bass awards and has over 5 million streams on Spotify on her feature tracks, with releases across Hospital Records and Shogun Audio. Her approach and philosophy in music are centered around authentic songwriting, re-telling personal experiences in metaphorically unique and interesting ways, taking influence from artists such as Jordan Rakei, Amy Winehouse and Julia Michaels. She released her debut EP Home Truth in 2019, which Clash branded as ‘meaningful pop with subtle soul and jazz influences.’
After recently receiving two New Music Single funding grants from NZOA, Blake is now working with some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s top emerging producers to complete her second EP project, blending her past and present musical influences of soul, electronic and pop music to generate something fresh and unique.
