12 April 2008 - 0 Comments

Daylight Saving has now been sent into hibernation…but rest assured that there’s to be no hibernating at IMNZ HQ. In fact, as the summer fades here we will be seeing many of our own heading to the Northern Hemisphere for shows – and those back here holding the fort have a more than decent selection of shows and releases for you to browse through...

March/April News

Welcome to our newest member, Siren Records, whose band Opshop are much in demand at the moment. After performing at the sold out Vodafone Homegrown festival in Wellington on April 26, they’ll be in Sydney where they’re nominated for an MTV Music Award, then in LA performing a showcase at the Musexpo trade show on April 29 before they head to the UK for shows. Their album ‘Second Hand Planet’ has also just gone double platinum. Annabel Fay is off to LA soon to write with Greg Johnson, and Goldenhorse are currently in the UK.

Flight of the Conchords follow the release of their six-track Grammy Award-Winning CDEP ‘The Distant Future’ with their full-length record album debut, the conveniently titled ‘Flight of the Conchords’ (which, not coincidentally, is also the name of their HBO television series). Produced by Mickey Petralia (Beck ‘Midnight Vultures’, Ladytron, Light & Sound) in Los Angeles, New York and Wellington, the album features fleshed-out and newly recorded versions of Flight of the Conchords’ concert and television favourites.

Don McGlashan has been confirmed as the support act for Crowded House’s forthcoming US tour which runs through April and May, playing 3 dates in New York at the Filmore, with 2 shows in Boston, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco and LA and one show in Washington.  The British Empire Tour is a collective of US-based singer/songwriters who hail from current and former parts of the British Empire, most of whom perform in one, or several, of the other’s bands (and in Sid Jordan's case, all of them). This wee group will be touring all over the USA this year – as they say, "like the Travelling Wilburys but not nearly so famous and more of us are alive." The tourists are Ted Brown (NZ), Greg Johnson (NZ), Simon Petty (UK), Seth Rothschild (US) and Sid Jordan (UK).

Hollie Smith with her full New Zealand band commences her first International tour in April, taking in France, Switzerland, London, Edinburgh and Dublin dates to perform songs from her debut album ‘Long Player’. Smith’s band features Darren Mathiassen (Drums), Ned Ngatae (Guitar), Crete Haami (Bass) with Stephanie Hearfield and Ria Hall performing Backing Vocals. Former Baitercell and Schumacher vocalist Bex Riley features on UK drum and bass act Noisia’s track ‘Gutterpunk’; the full release is scheduled for April 14th through Fatboy Slim’s label Skint Records.  Later this month Fat Freddy’s Drop venture back to tour Europe, with dates in Paris and at the Bristol Academy already sold out. They also play the legendary Big Chill Festival in the UK in August.

So many Kiwi artists have impressed our cousins across the Tasman that the 2008 MTV Australia music video awards this year include a New Zealand section. Up for the award, presented on Saturday April 26, are Atlas, the Checks, the Mint Chicks, Opshop and Scribe, and Scribe is performing on the MTV Mile High Flight with Dizzee Rascal on April 25th. Scribe performed on the inaugural Bacardi Train in February which travelled over a weekend from Melbourne to Sydney - the tour was made into a documentary that is currently airing on Channel V. He performed Say It Again with Tyra Hammond on So You Think You Can Dance Australia which was watched by over 1.5 million people, and then and flew straight to Wellington to be part of the ‘Bro Town’ stage in the International Festival of the Arts. He’s also part of the Aoteroa All Stars Think Twice single which is out now, and playing on the Tour of Dirty tour.

Some illustrious music press is paying homage to The Ruby Suns’ album ‘Sea Lion’ - added to the praise pile is the "Best New Music" title from highly regarded tastemaker website Pitchfork, and ‘Sea Lion’ was the "biggest mover" on the CMJ Radio 200 Airplay chart in mid-March...it rose 86 places to #24. The band is currently on tour in the US, having played 6 shows at SXSW in Austin Texas; they travel to the UK later this month.  After supporting the The Midnight Juggernauts at V’s first free Block Party in December in Auckland, Pig Out were given a helping hand by V to get them to SXSW in Austin, Texas in March, after they were one of the select group of New Zealand artists invited. The band are filming a documentary of their USA adventure.

Ash Puriri has launched his first album of originals, ‘Aroha - Just One Word – Love’, which sold 3,000 copies in its first month. Puriri can often be found as a headline act on the Carnival cruise ships, where thousands of his earlier albums have been sold worldwide. In February he performed with the Waikato Trust Symphony as one of the headline acts at the Hamilton Summer Festival which over 10,000 people attended; he’s also been commissioned for the 2009 Festival. Other IMNZ acts at the Festival included the Darcy Perry Band, the Mamaku Project, the Jews Brothers, Pacific Curls and Nigel Gavin. And at Tainui's celebration of 150 years of the Kingitanga Movement this May, Puriri will perform the anthem he composed for the Maori monarch Kingi Tuheitia.

Upon returning from a successful expedition to the U.S, Miriam Clancy was chosen to support double Grammy-winning US band Wilco at their New Zealand shows over Easter weekend. While in the States, Clancy was lauded as "the next biggest thing to hit Nashville" on nationwide G.A.C. TV show, Edge Of Country, her video for Girl About Town is in rotation, her music is playing on ‘The Indie Revolution Radio Show in New York’ – had interest from Japanese and Australian media plus Q and Mojo magazines in the UK. Back home, Anzac Day documentary ‘Night After Night’ will feature a song by Miriam Clancy and Whirimako Black, and you can hear her alongside Dave Dobbyn on his anthemic Welcome Home on a current TV commercial.

Speaking of TV, SJD is providing the music for Russell Brown’s new TV show Media 7 which launched on April 2 on digital channel TVNZ7. Former chorister Dudley Benson, following the release of a series of critically acclaimed EPs, has released his debut LP ‘The Awakening’; his Canterbury tales augmented by a cast of textured piano, harpsichord, strings and choir. Benson has just completed his album release tour in which he performed sold out shows in some of the nation’s finest churches. You can catch respected Maori musicians Ruia and Moana and the Tribe in a rare performance on May 15 at Auckland’s Galatos in celebration of new releases for each – Ruia is releasing his new album ’12:24’ on April 24 while Moana and the Tribe will release ‘Wha’ in May.

The Bats have just toured the main centres of New Zealand in April with their inseparable friends Minisnap, who recently released their album ‘Bounce Around’ to great reviews. Since the success of Fat Freddy's Drop 'Live at the Matterhorn' there have been calls for another production from the Matterhorn assembly, and on April 23 soul and jazz-tinged singer-songwriter LA Mitchell and her 6-piece band are recording only the second album in the series at the famed Wellington bar.

After an impressive array of summer festival slots, An Emerald City are releasing their 4-track EP on April 14, with a release party on April 19 at Pt Chevalier’s Ambassador Theatre. After completing the successful 17-date Gypsy Fever tour in February, The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band supported Beirut at the Kings Arms in March and will play in Piha later this month. Sleepytime’s (aka Jo Contag) record-breaking 48-minute Twilight Drone video premiers on music TV this month and will be exhibited in Wellington and Auckland at the Film Archive; Jo will perform live at the screenings. Tim Guy is in Europe promoting his new album 'Hummabyes' and (rumour has it) he’s taking a bit of a sojourn in Spain to write some new material. Karen Hunter is playing here and there with her bag of tricks around the country this month.

Antix have just released their third album ‘Wanderers’ – debut album ‘Lull’ (released in 2003 on Denmark’s Iboga Records) and follow-up ‘Twin Coast Discovery’ were hailed as landmarks on the progressive scene. In addition to ‘Wanderers’ they’ve also released the ‘Wandering Remixes’ DVD/CD package, with re-rubbed edits ranging from dub step, minimal to trip rock from the likes of Simon Flower, Drake & Orson, Kasey Taylor, Nyquist, and Solead. The DVD covers their December USA tour. Variously described as “Bargain basement dance-punk”, “Shoegaze meets extreme” and “with an out of time rhythm section…I suppressed the urge to unplug the power and tell the kids to stop making that awful racket!!”, Christchurch based Tiger Tones aren’t too sure what they are either. You can check out for yourself their debut self-titled album due out on April 14th on Pinacolada/Rhythmethod. Tiger Tones have played shows on A Low Hum tours/camps, featured in Real Groove and Rip it Up and were nominated at the 2007 bNet awards. They have a tour planned for late April/early May.

The New Zealand Post National Schools Poetry Awards have expanded to include a new music-related prize category, Best Lyric, which will be judged by Mike Chunn (ex-Split Enz/Citizen Band, Play It Strange) and Samuel Flynn Scott (the Phoenix Foundation). Flynn Scott will adapt the winning lyric into a song to be recorded and released by Loop Media, accompanied by a video; plus the winner receives $500 cash and time in the studio with Sam and the sound engineer. Entry forms can be downloaded from the NZ Post website nzpost.co.nz/poetryawards, and the deadline is June 3. Loop Management will drop The Black Seeds into the US market with the release of their latest album 'Into The Dojo' this month; and they presented both The Mint Chicks and The Slits at the South by SouthWest (SXSW).

2008 heralds O.G's (aka Oakley Grenell) third release after 2002’s ‘Jaded’ EP and 2003’s ‘Uncharted’ LP, both of which were nominated for NZ bNet awards. Over the last 3 years Oakley has been collaborating in the hip hop realm with vocalists and musicians in NZ, Australia and the UK to piece together 'Moving On' LP, due April 21 through Central Records/Rhythmethod. ‘Moving On’ features vocalists Mark Vanilau, L. A. Mitchell, Mara TK, Spikey Tee, Charmed 1 and MCs Dynamite MC, KP and Switch, Wacklar and Voodoo Child. Mastered in the UK by Grammy award-winner George Lambert (Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Tribe Called Quest), Grenell feels that this album is his best work to date. There will be a pre-release party at Auckland’s Khuja Lounge on April 19 where O.G. will be spinning the new album live with MC KP (Sunshine Soundsystem) toasting over the works; you can score album giveaways on the night.

John White’s ‘Mogwash’ CD has been released in NZ after its release in USA on Last Visible Dog. Dunedin based musician and natural accent singer Tono has joined the She’ll Be Right ranks, his EP ‘Love and Economics’ is out this month and you can catch Tono in Auckland on April 4, with the EP release party on  April 12 at The Backstage in Dunedin (with Graeme Downes and Haunted Love).  Catch the video for Minute Stars by The Incredible Braking Wheel: they hired a train and dressed people in Victorian costume on a most economical budget. Christchurch lad Delaney Davidson and his Alpine Cretins from Bern (Switzerland) also have a country/bluegrass album coming out in April, featuring female vocalist Chessy Weaver. Also this year, Lindon Puffin is off on a world tour, Ragamuffin Children are moving to Europe for a while, and Trillion (Jody Lloyd) is moving to Melbourne this month; and Lloyd was one of 6 New Zealand songwriters selected to attend APRA’s Song Summit 2008 in Sydney in this month, and he’ll be speaking at Chart’s Burning Issues in Christchurch on April 9, answering music industry related questions.

Luke Thompson gained the Single of the Week spot on Australasian iTunes on March 26; it’s a while since we saw a Kiwi there, especially an on an independent release.  An afternoon concert and compassionate walk for the animals are to take place on April 19 at the Soundshell in Napier. Organised by SAFE, the Big Paws Out is a free day with animal-friendly musical talent - Flip Grater, Victoria Girling-Butcher, Ragamuffin Children and Daniel Munro have donated their time. Dogs (on leashes) are, of course, welcome. Walk Right Up is the first track off Ladi 6’s highly anticipated debut album and is out now on 7”. This track – and much of her album – features production by Mu (Fat Freddy’s Drop), as well as longtime collaborator Parks. Kora’s new video Skankenstein is getting much attention for its slick animation.

2008 is set to be a big year for ElevenfiftySeven with new releases from Antagonist, Cobra Khan and Kitsch - but first off the bat is the addition of Auckland’s Los Muertos to the roster; their debut self-titled album was available from April 7th 2008. The past year has seen Los Muertos take to the stage alongside Bleeders, Cobra Khan, Kitsch and Antagonist, plus securing support slots for internationals Thrice (USA) and Behind Crimson Eyes (Aus) and a slot on the 2008 Killerfest - and this month they hit the road with Bleeders. March saw the DVD release of Chris Graham’s feature movie 'The Ferryman' which includes the Cobra Khan rendition of Chris De Burgh’s 80's classic Don’t Pay the Ferryman, available digitally via Amplifier & iTunes.  Kitsch make a come back this month with shows alongside Sommerset and Against Me (USA).

Former member of the legendary Formula who penned the anthem Nature, Wayne Mason, and his band The Fallen Angels will be touring in 2008 to celebrate the launch of their latest CD, 'Sense Got Out', Mason's third album under his own name and first with the band. The title song was a finalist in the prestigious US-based International Songwriting Competition 2006, judged by some of the top musicians in the world. The Enright House are heading out on tour later this month, and the lineup this time will see an all-acoustic three piece hop on the ferry, with toy drum kit, acoustic guitar and piano in tow. Shaun K Anderson will be the support act.

‘Medicine Man’ is the anticipated second album by dDub; the songs are a culmination of two years writing, touring and extensive road testing. The album was recorded in-between a busy 12 month schedule of 56 New Zealand and Australian tour dates and numerous summer festival appearances; already the first single Hesitate No has attracted radio and TV attention. Mastering was by Don Bartley in Sydney (Silverchair, Missy Higgins, Evermore), and it was mixed and engineered by Singapore-based Stu Newman (Stellar, Greg Johnson) who was a big influence on the sound of the first album ‘Awake at Dawn’.

In 2006 HDU took fans by surprise when they broke a recording silence of five years with the single Tunguska, and in 2007 they released another taster in the form of the limited edition split 7“ vinyl of Stupormodel split with Die !Die! Die!’s Blue Skies, which promptly sold out.  HDU’s fourth album ‘Metamathics’ has been four years in the making and features both these tracks. It also features an impressive cast of guest musicians such as Tom Watson (Cassette), Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), Lee Prebble and Celia Church. ‘Metamathics’ is out April 14 and HDU are touring New Zealand in May 2008. Since Tainted’s last show in November at Southern Amp2 the boys have been working hard on fresh material for their second album at York Street Studios. Their 2008 shows kick off this month around New Zealand, including a brief tour with Subtract and at Auckland's 'Mammoth Metalfest'.

Red Eye Society, Cyphanetik and DJ Substance are back on the road during April and May for the LRG Good Times Roll National Tour, with local supports in each town. Strangers (who are as influenced by Big Black as they are Entombed and Neurosis and who feature current and ex-members of Damaged, Scab, Guest Stabs Host, Dial and The Deadline) are currently touring their debut album ‘The Weight’ in Australia and then they’re back for New Zealand shows on April 16. And you can beat those pre-winter blues when the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra and surprise special guests deliver two special shows, one at Auckland’s MonteCristo Room and one at the San Francisco Bathhouse, Wellington.

To celebrate the April 7 release of his album ‘In The Heart of The City’, Flowz is getting his hustle on with live shows in Auckland and Wellington, accompanied by live band The Usos with whom he has been jamming with on the sly in Wellington and delivered support for Fat Freddy’s Drop at The Bush Party, Matakana. The MC from the ‘Hurricane City’ has also thrown his weight behind the recent Aotearoa All Stars Think Twice single release and video, just one of numerous collaborations since making his mark as a founder of Footsouljahs posse and 2Much Records. His debut solo album features production from John Chong Nee and DJ Raw and guest appearances from Joe Dukie, Savage and Tommy Graff.

One Million Dollars have decided to call it quits after 7 very eventful years, and they have announced two final shows – in Wellington on April 12 and in Auckland on April 19. Since forming in 2001, the band have released 3 albums and played a huge swag of shows throughout the Pacific, with live highlights including performing at Fest Na'puan in Vanuatu, playing at Te Papa for The Lord Of The Rings: Two Towers premiere and supporting The Black Eyed Peas at the St James in 2002. The decision to retire the band was initiated by founding member Richard Setford who is departing to concentrate on Bannerman, a solo project begun in 2003. All current members are actively involved in a variety of working bands, including Dam Native, The Shades, Opensouls, Ziko, Batucada Sound Machine, The Lickety Splits, The Mamaku Project and Tyra And The Tornadoes, and will continue to work on their own projects and collaborations.

Ode Records have a couple of special albums represented for Anzac Day. ‘Ake, Ake, Kia Kaha E!: Songs of the New Zealand 28 (Maori) Battalion’ is a recording of huge importance to New Zealand - these tracks were performed by the New Zealand 28 (Maori) Battalion on location in the sands of Egypt, during gunfire in North Africa, and between green hills in Southern Italy during World War II. The CD features spoken messages, situation reports, concert medleys aimed at tribal areas from which the men were drawn, and a song of remembrance by Pacific Island members. And ‘Lest We Forget:’ by the Band of the Royal Regiment of NZ Artillery features tracks unique to the ANZAC tradition including Invercargill March, Waltzing Matilda and God Defend New Zealand among many others, performed by the oldest band in New Zealand, with unbroken service (they were established in 1864).

Ensemble in Residence at The University of Auckland, NZTrio has a reputation for surprising and impressing both contemporary and classical music lovers. The group’s latest album ‘Bright Tide Moving Between’ is being released to coincide with the group’s April Fire and Water tour, where Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland audiences will experience the trio performing a unique collection of works created within the last decade by composers from Brazil, the US, Japan and New Zealand. Newly packaged with a 28 page booklet, Viking Sevenseas - via Border Music - presents ‘Haere Mai’, a collection of renowned Maori cultural performances. The album features tracks by renowned groups such as the St. Joseph’s Maori Girls’ Choir, Turakina Maori Girls’ College Choir, New Zealand Maori Chorale, and the New Zealand Maori Theatre Trust; tracks include Po Atarau (Now is the Hour), Hine e Hine, Haere Mai, and Pokarekare Ana.
