Close My Eyes is a collaboration drawing from Paul The Kid's reggae and modern hip-hop influences and theajsound's pop and soul influences. It is self produced and recorded by both artists with Paul taking the mixing and arrangement reigns.
This collaboration came about organically after AJ heard the chorus on Paul’s Instagram story and flicked him a DM. AJ thought the track could go in a new direction by switching the chords up and building the ending into a hypnotic church like chant. This beat switch turned the song into something anthemic and nostalgic as a counter to the hyper dark feel leading up to it.
Kanye West was a huge inspiration for this song and the tempo comes straight off a cut from Drakes latest album. This is why the theme of God is present, but not in a “saviour” or “love and light” way, but in a way that is unsettling, anxious and honest. Paul wants to leave the chorus lyric “I close my eyes so God won’t look my way” open to interpretation as it can be taken many, many ways. Maybe from an introspective first person point of view in that you are hiding from yourself, rather than an external God, or that we offload anxieties and fears to an external God - never truly facing reality - hiding. It is up to you and what you feel and take from the lyric and it seems to change as the song progresses too.
One darker fact about this song is that the second verse accurately predicted, to the exact day, what Paul was about to go through. He was in fact rushed to hospital the day after lockdown ended… so be careful what you visualise!
