Members of long-standing Bay of Plenty blues 'n' roots band Kokomo are warming up for the launch of their new album with the release of their first music from 2022. Born To Bad Luck is a new country-blues song, telling a heart-felt and humorous story. It will be released across all digital platforms on May 14th and is accompanied by a video filmed at Tauranga's Boatshed Studio.
Last year Kokomo celebrated 30 years of making music with the release of A Little Something From The Attic, an album of out-takes, rarities and demos curated from 30 years of making music together.
The upcoming album – Workhorse – is a new collection of ten original songs and will be released in July. It is a blues-oriented album exploring choices in life and living, mythologising New Zealand landscape, and examining the stresses of Covid times; it's also a whole bunch of fun.
Born To Bad Luck was written by award-winning Kiwi songwriter, Kokomo frontman Derek Jacombs. It was recorded at Tauranga's fabled Boatshed Studio, a charming rural studio complete with swimming pool, also used by the likes of Boogie-Woogie Queen Jan Preston and the esteemed Shona Laing.
Born To Bad Luck is the first Kokomo release to include new guitarist Santiago Rebagliati, who joined the band at Easter 2021. It also features guest accordion from Alan Norman (The Warratahs, Windy City Strugglers), who plays throughout the album.
The Bay of Plenty 6-piece originally formed in 1991 under the name 'Kokomo Blues', an acoustic trio dedicated to playing early pre-war blues. As the current millennium arrived the band grew larger, shortened its name, and switched to playing original songs.
