April/May News

Flight of the Conchords have started NZ Music Month in the stellar style we’ve come to expect from the duo – their new self-titled album has debuted at No. 3 on the U.S. pop chart, which sets a new record for a New Zealand act, surpassing the No. 12 peak for Crowded House's self-titled 1986 debut. The album entered the Official New Zealand Music Charts this week at number 2; and thanks to Dub Dot Dash (dubdotdash.blogspot.com) we hear that the boys are on the cover of Bust magazine’s ‘Men we love’ issue as well as featuring in a photo shoot for Maxim magazine. And in breaking news, ‘Flight of the Conchords’ today hit Number 1 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart.

Die! Die! Die! have just been signed to the William Morris Talent and Literary agency, one of the biggest booking agencies in the world. Amongst the artists on their roster are Tool, The Roots, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Gnarls Barkley, Nine Inch Nails, Erykah Badu and fellow Kiwis the Finn Brothers. They have also been invited by legendary UK band Wire to support them at their New York show on May 30th; this follows 13 US dates with Michigan’s Von Bondies.

Moana Maniapoto, with her band Moana and the Tribe, is one of only five artists invited to perform at a United Nations concert in Germany on May 19, alongside some impressive company - Bob Geldof (UK), Hugh Masekela (Africa), Daniela Mercury (South America), and Gocoo (Japan). Moana and The Tribe have been selected to represent the Pacific before a 5000 strong crowd; the show is part of an international tour taking the band to Canada and through Europe. Their fourth album 'Wha' is out on May 12, and before heading overses Moana and the Tribe will be performing at Galatos on May 15 and at the Erupt Festival which explodes into action on May 8; other Erupt performers include Batacuda Sound Machine, Richard Nunns (playing nga taonga puoro - traditional Maori instruments, solo as well as accompanying the New Zealand String Quartet), and the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.

We were very sad to hear of the passing of much-loved singer/songwriter Mahinarangi Tocker on April 15 after a severe asthma attack. Mahinarangi celebrated her Maori, Hebrew and Celtic ancestry with her music, and in this January's New Year Honours she became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music; she contributed enormously to all of the communities she was involved with.

As autumn sidles up to us here and the Northern Hemisphere gears up for summer, many acts are flying the coop and heading north, including Opshop, Minuit, Scribe, Shapeshifter and Pitch Black. Shapeshifter have started recording their next album, they are touring Europe and the UK in May, and releasing a 12” of One (complete with a remix by drum and bass luminary D-Bridge) in Europe in June. The Ruby Suns have won a new fan in Kyle Rother who writes for the influential Tripwire music website (thetripwire.com). Out soon on She’ll Be Right Records in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US is Canadian-based writer and poet Jim Christy’s album of spoken word and music ‘God’s Little Angle’; the album was produced by label head Jody Lloyd, who is currently residing in Melbourne.

US musician Greg Franco (who has previously worked with The Clean) is returning this month to do an acoustic national tour with Otis Mace, who is releasing a new EP ‘Two Black Cats’. Support on the South Island leg is Dragstrip. In other Powertool news, the second single in their Singles Going Steady Series is a limited edition double A-Side mini CD taken from the upcoming compilation 'Bulletholes 3: The Best Is Yet To Come', featuring Robert Scott and Sandra Bell; and Dunedin band Jetty's album 'Soundtracks For Modern Heartbreak' is the first Powertool release for 2008, and the first release from the Indie Club Sessions is Auckland band Meddle, which is out now. Check out the new Alien store in New Lynn this NZ Music Month too.

Savage hit #15 on the US ITunes top 100 with his single Swing, and reached #58 on the ITunes Pop 100, selling in excess of 50,000 units in the US. Dawn Raid are currently negotiating a major label deal for Savage between 4 different labels...stay tuned! Bulletproof’s new album ‘Dark Times – Desperate Measures’ is out this week through Concord Dawn’s Uprising label. He has a mini tour in NZ before heading off to tour Europe. State Of Mind are also currently touring Europe, and are hard at work on their second album, due for release in September. Richie from One Million Dollars’ new release under the name of Bannerman is due out this month.

Antagonist hit Australian shores yet again in June this time supporting Australian hardcore giants Parkway Drive on a full national tour. Antagonist's debut 'These Cities, Our Graves' will be released in Australia through Melbourne label Trial & Error/Stomp distribution on May 24th. The Australian edition is repackaged and contains bonus tracks, and it will also be made available here in New Zealand from May 27th. May also sees both Cobra Khan and Antagonist in the studio recording new albums. Los Muertos, fresh from releasing their debut album, are due to support Americans Strung Out and No Use For A Name in June.

On Friday May 9 the NZSO will perform a Made in New Zealand concert featuring works by New Zealand composers where Whirimako Black will also contribute Te Reo renditions of popular jazz standards; shortly after she will travel to Australia for her first shows there. The Auckland Philharmonia on May 16 has a concert featuring 100% New Zealand music: their Discover New Zealand Music concert features works by IMNZ artist John Psathas alongside pieces by Dorothy Buchanan, David Hamilton, Ross Harris, Gareth Farr and Karlo Margetic. The Tweeks and Alistair Galbraith are among the artists playing live from the Radio One studio on the Dunedin station’s NZ music show The Local every Thursday during NZ Music Month.

Telecom and NZ Music Month are running a competition called Little Town, Big Gig, which will be the official closing of NZ Music Month 2008 with Opshop playing a show in the competition winner’s town at a venue of their choice. If you’d like to enter, visit telecom.co.nz/opshop or nzmusicmonth.co.nz and let them know why the band should travel to your town to play, and where the gig should take place, and you could be in the running to see the show that night in your rugby club, tearoom, school hall, or somewhere else so good that the judges will only know it when they see it.

For NZ Music Month this year, the Christchurch Music Trust CHART presents CHARTFEST in on Friday May 23rd, featuring showcases, music clinics, workshops, stalls, prizes and giveaways, with live performances from a range of artists including Ladi6, Dukes, The Bats, Tiger Tones, Flip Grater Band, Oakley Grenell and Mark Vanilau and many more. The High School Day Out features workshops with Jason Kerrison (Opshop) and Ben Campbell (Atlas). Later in the month, on May 28, Shapeshifter and Ladi6’s manager Rebecca Caughey is speaking at a NZ Music Month workshop on 'Marketing Your Music'.

Auckland's fast-rising purveyors of melodic metal Cause For Alliance have shows coming up across the North Island during NZ Music Month, and their 'Coalesce’ EP is in stores now. Since Tainted’s last show in November at Southern Amp2 the boys have been working hard on their second album at York Street Studio with renowned producer/engineer Clint Murphy. Their 2008 shows kicked off last month including a brief tour with Subtract and a set at Auckland's Mammoth Metalfest.

The Pirongia Mountain Men and Jan Mellsop are heading to Paihia for the country rock festival, which is being held from May 9th to the 11th.  You can also catch the Keith Pendergrast and his Mountain Men on their regular gig on the Waipa Delta. White Swan Black Swan have just released their EP ‘Castle of Useless Junk’ and decided to invite their Melbourne friends the Spoils along to see some New Zealand countryside, plus a few cozy, ramshackle cafes, bars, barns and lodges along the way on their national tour which has just wound up. After releasing their debut album 'Reflections' last year, Tahuna Breaks had a busy summer playing festival crowds and helping students find their way back to Uni with a nationwide orientation tour. Now they’re in Australia, touring with the ex-pat Kiwis of Dubdoubt; and they have a New Zealand tour booked for May.

Pluto and Kora were among the acts who played the Jim Beam Concerts at the enormously successful V8 Supercar events held in Hamilton over April 18th to the 20th. And Chuganaut, Sinate and many more played the V8 Super Gig at The Meteor. In other festival news, the Vodafone Homegrown festival in Wellington sold out 3 weeks ahead of the event. Disasteradio is taking a break from shows after a mental summer of touring but is playing one very special show in Dunedin organised by Radio One Breakfast host Aaron Hawkins as part of his Basement Cuts series of shows.

On the back of a massive year, Pitch Black announce the release of their first two artist albums and a return to Australia for four special shows. Following the release of 2007’s 'Rude Mechanicals', Pitch Black have made their first and second albums 'Future Proof' and 'Electronomicon' available to Aussie fans. The double disc recordings have been re-mastered and include a number of hard to find remixes. The duo played Newcastle, Sydney, Hobart and Melbourne from April 26 to May 3.

The Naked And Famous release their debut EP 'This Machine' on Round Trip Mars on May 5th. With the lead track Serenade squatting at #1 for four weeks on the Radioscope Alt Chart  and monopolising bNet listener charts nationwide, anticipation is high for their EP launch at the Kings Arms on May 9th with Phelps & Munro and Bionic Pixie on the support tip. Look out for their very limited 7" pressing of ‘Serenade/Kill The Littleblackdots’ and the other hot 45 from Round Trip Mars featuring Jefferson Belt's Gold Dust alongside a brand new woofer-worrier from Unitone HiFi, Up To Eleven.  The Round Trip Mars camp will convening for a right old riot at Galatos on Saturday May 31st with SJD, Phelps & Munro, James Duncan and The Naked And Famous strutting the stage while Maiden Hong Kong and Stinky Jam swab the decks.

Walk Right Up is the first track off Ladi6’s highly anticipated debut album and is out now on 7”. This track – and much of her album – features production by Mu (Fat Freddy’s Drop), as well as by longtime collaborator Parks. As with the Traveling Wilburys, the Calico “Brothers" (three brothers, a cousin and a friend) all share the coincidence of the same surname, "Calico"; and as with the Wilburys, as Graham Reid noted (elsewhere.co.nz), they also share a love of clearly rendered country-pop.  Some of these Aucklanders have worked with Tim Finn, Dave Dobbyn, Bic Runga and others, and their debut EP is out now.

This year, Mr Sicc is introducing the nation to longtime friend and collaborator J-Dubb, who is fresh out of prison. ‘Old School Machete Funk’ is a blend of hip hop and funk, laced with J-Dubb and Mr Sicc's raw lyrics. J-Dubb, an Otara native, spent many of his formative years in Hawthorn, Los Angeles with his older brothers, returning home to continue with a new crew - The Bad Troublesome Ward - in the mid 1990's. This album features guest appearances by longtime friends The Movement, Big Rocks and Face-Killa, and, presented by Mr Sicc, it provides J-Dubb with the chance to capture the culture of L.A streets, and blend it with a South Auckland take on life.

Hot on the heels of their 2007 debut album ‘City’, George and Queen are on the road again for their second national tour in many of the familiar haunts. dDub released Medicine Man on the 1st of April: the album debuted at number 4 on the iTunes charts and made #33 on the Official NZ Music Chart, and the ‘Medicine Man’ tour is underway now. After headlining the It's a Monster National Tour of NZ and Australia in 2007 (including playing Sydney's sold out Homebake Festival), Onehunga's Red Eye Society continue with their Good Times Roll National Tour in May, with Cyphanetik, DJ Substance and local supports in each town. R.E.S - rappers J-One and Tek - combine observations on life, crime and poverty, complete with sinister beats and wrapped in their own Onehunga slang.

It is more than thirteen years since the sound of HDU first reverberated from a drafty warehouse in Dunedin. Their debut EP, 1995’s ‘Abstinence:Acrimony’, was followed by an album, ‘Sum of the Few’, in 1996, and over the next five years HDU released three further EPs, including the ‘Higher++’ remix project; and another two albums, with the last, 2001’s ‘Fireworks’, recorded at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago. In the intervening years, singer Tristan Dingemans has had his solo Kahu project, and drummer Dino Karlis has played and recorded with Dimmer amongst others. Four years in the making, and recorded and produced by drummer Dino Karlis and Bevan Smith (aka Signer, aka Aspen), the group recorded much of the album in different parts of the world, and in 2006 they started just about from scratch after a hard drive died taking the album mixes with it. ‘Metamathics’ features a notable cast of guest musicians such as Tom Watson (Cassette), Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), Lee Prebble and Celia Church; and the band are touring New Zealand in May.

Multi–instrumentalist Oakley ‘O.G.’ Grenell has released his second album ‘Moving On’, and it is the product of three years work, following on from 2002’s ‘Jaded’ EP and 2003’s debut L.P. ‘Uncharted’. Since 2002 Oakley has been involved with a range of jazz-inspired projects, being the initiator of the Departure Lounge and Otautahi Allstars bands and producer of hip-hop reggae dancehall crew The Eskimo Squad. Grenell, the son of country legend John Hore Grenell (who sold an outstanding 100,000 records by age 19) and brother of Shapeshifter’s drummer Redford Grenell, is also co-organiser of the I-Nation music festival and director of his own record label, Central Records. Moving On sees him collaborating with both new and celebrated talents from across the UK, Australia and New Zealand, including singers Mark Vanilau, Mara TK, LA Mitchell, Spikey Tee, Charmed 1 and MCs Dynamite MC, KP, Switch, Wacklar and Voodoo Child. The album was mastered by UK Grammy Award winner George Lambert (Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Tribe Called Quest) and mixed by b-Net award winner The Nomad.
O.G’s ‘Moving On’ vinyl EP is available now too.

The Phoenix Foundation’s Samuel F. Scott spent 2007 writing and recording music for Taika Waititi's film 'Eagle Vs Shark' and for The Phoenix Foundation’s third album 'Happy Ending'. This year he presents his second solo album ‘Straight Answer Machine’ (following his solo debut ‘The Hunt Brings Us Life’ from 2006). The album was recorded at Lee Prebble’s infamous Surgery with his band Bunnies On Ponies (Craig Terris – Cassette, Hell Is Other People, Bacon Foot; Tom Callwood – Little Bushman; Matt Armitage –Odessa, Good Laika, The Family Cactus, Ginger Brown).

For more than a decade Flowz - aka Fiso Siloata - has been on the mic, initially as a founder of the Footsouljahs crew and the 2Much Records stable. He now introduces his debut solo album ‘In The Heart of The City’, featuring production from John Chong Nee and underground legend DJ Raw, with guest vocal appearances from Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Savage, Phraze and Tommy Graff.

In Parachute news, Brian Platt has recently swaggered his way through the country on a national tour with Luke Thomson. Despite the desire to knuckle down and record her follow-up album, the demand for Juliagrace to play live remains strong; tours this year include Canada and Singapore. Her work as an artist associate for World Vision continues with a trip to Cambodia to visit her sponsored child, a national tour with comedian Paul Aldrich and a series of ‘Girls’ Night Events’ across the country. And after a break in 07, Parachute’s Noise Music Conference is back, which is three days of training, plus showcases ringing out each night by Mumsdollar, Callista, Edwin Derricutt, Kingston, Lauren Thompson and more.

Disruptiv Music’s latest music release is the ‘Disruptiv Mixtape Vol. 5’, a full-length mixtape-style CD featuring new songs from some of New Zealand’s premier hip-hop artists, including David Dallas, Mareko, Kolab, Scribe, Ethical, RES, Fast Crew, Tourettes, DJCXL and many more including the label’s own Young Mega, PotHeads, MC 4Higher and the man putting it all together, DJ Penfold. Some copies are being given away nationwide in the first week of May (this week!), and downloadable from Disruptiv Music’s recently re-built website, disruptive.com. The label is currently gearing up to release North Shore-based rap group PotHeads’ debut, and DJ Penfold is now resident on bFM’s legendary True School Hip-hop Show - plus the boys can be seen every week on Disruptiv TV on ALT TV, Monday at 11pm.

‘A Warm Gun’ is the new offering from the Nothing – formerly known as Chris Knox and the Nothing. Stefan Neville and Jol Mulholland once again provide the sinuously supportive rhythm section for Chris Knox’s stumbling chord changes, and they are now augmented by Roy Martyn on guitar. The album even comes with a beer coaster – on the reverse of which will be instructions on how to obtain the other 5 of the 6 part set: all different, attractive and practical. Needless to say the album goes well with a quiet beer…From Christchurch’s Pinacolada Records comes the debut album from Tiger Tones. Featuring ex-members of The Shocking Pinks and Pig Out, the Tiger Tones sound could be described as early Blondie crossed with a heavy dose of New Order, The Cure and a little bit of M.I.A. thrown in for good measure. They impressed at Camp A Low Hum 2008 and were nominated for Best New Act at the 2007 bNet awards before they’d even released a record.

Monkey Records are pulling out all the stops this May! The Hot Grits are releasing their debut album 'It's Too Drunk to Be This Early', and they'll be bringing their 11 piece afro soul/funk extravaganza to a North Island town near you; the South Island will have a Grits tour in August. The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band have released their EP 'Danse Macabre' to retail due to popular demand (up until now it was only available at gigs) and will be having a relaunch at the Whammy Bar (Auckland) on May 16th. The Band is led by the red-bearded Benka, and they specialise in an irresistibly danceable mad mashup of Eastern European, Gypsy and Jewish music liberally doused in vodka and set alight. Since late 2005, Aucklanders An Emerald City have been blending sounds of the East with psychedelia; the summer of 07/08 saw them perform to audiences at Soundsplash, Rhythm & Vines, bFM's Summer Series, Shore Sounds and WOMAD; and now they've released their debut EP 'An Emerald City' - the track Qing Song was recently Karen Walker's opening track at New York Fashion Week. 'Monkey Magic II' is a specially priced CD/DVD featuring 14 new tracks from Monkey artists and their friends including The Hot Grits, The BBB Band, An Emerald City, Steve Abel, Haunted Love, Ragamuffin Children and Tim Guy. The DVD features all fourteen videos released by Monkey Records over the last seven years, involving some of New Zealand's most innovative film-makers. The Monkey Magic circus will be on the road in May and June with The Hot Grits, An Emerald City, The BBB Band and DJ Balkanetic and kicks off with a pyschedelic gypsy funk explosion at Galatos on May 23rd. 'The Twilight Drone' is the third installment in Johannes Contag's 'Sleepytime' series and while the previous releases were music albums, 'The Twilight Drone' is an ambient film, and arguably the world's longest music video at 49 minutes. Contag is best known in NZ for his work with Cloudboy, and on Jay Clarkson's recent 'Over The Mountain' album. Last but not least, Monkey Records are excited to announce that they have signed singer/songwriter Renee Louise Carafice and will be releasing her album 'Tells You To Fight' in early August, with the first single/video (I'm Your) Bodhisattva out early May and another song Larazopam featured on the Real Groove cover CD for May.

From his Antipodean sanctuary DJ/producer Dick ‘Magik’ Johnson’s second album ‘You Are Sound’ has emerged. In the early days Magik rocked his own room at the legendary Manchester nightclub The Hacienda; from there an interest in production developed, and before long he was producing tracks for Cream’s Olympic label, New Order’s Pleasure Recordings and Manchester’s Paper Recordings collective. He then established respected dance label Shaboom Records, and Magik's own music has been released on such influential imprints as Made To Play, Twisted, End Recordings, Saved, Underwater, Paper Recordings, KG Beats and NRK/Honchos, and he has remixed for Worthy, Ian Pooley, Crazy Penis, DJ Sneak, Joey Negro, Q-Burns, Human League, Neon Heights, Spektrum, Nick Holder, Darko Esser, 33HZ, The Bionics, The Crookers and too many more to list here. One might say that’s a very ‘Sound’ resume.

Kittyhawk are an Auckland disco-punk band, who’ve played at Camp A Low Hum, The Mint Chicks’ sold out Auckland farewell and headlined the 3-day Wellington Music Festival From Here to Future Days. Their singles Disco Peril and Big Stick have both been in listed in the Kiwi FM Top 10 and received airplay on 95 BFM, Radio Active and Fleet FM, and their debut album, also called ‘Disco Peril’, is out now. Cosmic Rays of Death are leaping on Charlie Ash's Bodega show on May 17 to celebrate the release of their EP. (Thanks Charlie Ash!)

On May 1st The Tweeks made New Zealand music history by releasing their second album through Borderline Records on USB drive as well as CD. Realising the folly of the CD industry The Tweeks have opted for a new – albeit plagarised directly from somebody else – and innovative way of releasing their sophomore, self titled album... by releasing it on specially-made Tweeks USB Drives - complete with artwork created specifically for painless importing into your iTunes library.  The album will also be available to download over the internet and on a limited run of CDs. Recorded entirely by the band themselves over a period of 9 days in November 2007, the band chose to return to Dunedin's Albany Street Studios – the location of recording sessions for both their previous releases. In all, 11 tracks were recorded with the mixing being handled by drummer Stu Harwood and mastering by Dale Cotton.
