Racing have today returned with their next instalment of their Bang Bang Friday’s campaign with new single High For My Lovers and b-side Suburban Dancing. Listen HERE
The second release from Racing’s, 2022 Bang Bang Friday’s campaign, the band will be rolling out double single releases over coming months as they lead to a full album later in the year.
Following on from the radio favourite In Silver and it’s b-side, Aqua Boogie, released earlier this year which set the wheels in motion; Racing are excited to bring the next focus single High For My Lovers and it’s B-side, Suburban Dancing.
Racing’s Sven Petterson says “High For My Lovers is a series of dreamlike romantic visions. The song is more a series of surreal situational descriptions of the feelings of a melancholic ecstasy as opposed to a linear narrative.”
The vibe of this new single is described as, “1970's French Cinema Disco through the filter of a desert Island Beach.”
“High For My Lovers was primarily written in a dream, which is typically a far more trustworthy source given that it's unencumbered by the practicality of waking thoughts. It became apparent we had something when we were all together drinking margaritas listening to demos on an ice cold evening. High For My Lovers came on and we listened to it over and over again singing harmonies, in a way developing it, but around a table with voices chipping in on various harmonies from the back deck,” says Sven.
Recorded and the Lab and mixed by Dave Eringa in England, the recording process was slowly built up over a long time, with subtle new textures and motifs brought in and out to bounce off each other, including a very haunting and fleeting trumpet cameo.
“High For My Lovers reflects the approach that the song always leads us as to how it wants to be expressed. This song called for a more feminine surreal sparkling side of our musical patois but still with the patent heavy groove,” says Sven.
Made up of long-time collaborators Ed Knowles (vocals) and Sven Pettersen (guitar) - two crucial parts of the colossus that was The Checks - and two other heavy hitters on the Kiwi alt scene, Daniel Barrett (bass) and Izaak Houston (drums), Racing has gone on to forge its own path on the local indie rock scene.
Racing’s sophomore album out later this year follows on from critically-acclaimed 2018 debut album Real Dancing, which included radio hits Run Wild (50 weeks in NZ’s official rock chart) and Motel Pool.
High For My Lovers offers an exciting taste of what is to come from the band as they explore brand new feels and explorations.
