Baby Zionov is the musical project of Aaliyah Zionov (she/her), a musician and songwriter currently based in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Baby Zionov's music takes influence from 90's happy hardcore, 70's space disco, and vintage 16-bit video game soundtracks. She lays her playfully sensual vocals delicately throughout the mix.
Today she shares Henrietta's Melancholy, the third single from her new album Henrietta, out July 1 via Sunreturn.

Henrietta's Melancholy is a woozy combo of P-Funk bass, house rhythms, and breakbeat interludes. "This funky little tune was designed as sort of a miniature DJ set, taking you through the trajectory of a whole night out in less than 5 minutes" says Zionov.
"The beat and bass stay pretty consistent while the textures and moods surrounding them come and go. The first half is pure disco boogie-shoes party time, but in the second half it slowly gets sparser and more intimate."
"It’s the musical equivalent of when everyone’s left the party and it’s just you and the girls sitting on the floor having deep and meaningfuls in between nangs."
As with all of the singles from Henrietta, Baby Zionov offers an alternative reworking of the original, this time a Dream House Version. "The “dream house version” on the B-side takes the sparser second half of the song and extends it, as well as giving it a more shuffley beat that’s a little harder to dance to, but much easier to blissfully nod your head to while thinking about life and stuff."
"It’s modelled after those classic 90's deep house tunes that I guess were made for chilling out to, but accidentally came out a little too beautiful, so instead they make everyone within earshot either cry or stare pensively into space."
