Festival favourite Bay Dreams is back with fresh branding and a new purpose – to create the ultimate festival experience that Aotearoa has to offer. The event is back to its full potential and set to be one of the highlight festivals of the summer.
Organiser Mitch Lowe says “We have been through many changes the past couple years and have grown in even more ways as a company. We’ve pushed the boundaries on shows throughout the year, and we will be taking all of our learnings and implementing them at Bay Dreams 2023, to make sure it’s a festival experience that is talked about long after Diplo plays his final tune.”
Bay Dreams 2023 will be held at Trustpower Baypark in Mount Maunganui on January 3rd and at Trafalgar Park in Nelson on January 5th. Returning to summer hotspots Mount Maunganui and Nelson, Bay Dreams 2023 will feature a diverse line-up of long-awaited international talent
and world-class production.
The festival welcomes one of the most dynamic forces in music today, Diplo! This ten-time Grammy nominated artist has just released his solo album self-titled ‘Diplo’, which features the global hit Don’t Forget My Love. He is also known as a founding member of Major Lazer, as well as one half of ‘Jack U’ with Skrillex. He has amassed billions of streams and is known as one of the greatest producers of our generation. Diplo has also collaborated with some of the world’s biggest artists including Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber and Sia, and has headlined many of the biggest festivals in the world.
Crowd favourites Sticky Fingers return to the festival after a four year hiatus. Their popularity is far and wide with over 1.6 billion digital streams, a sold out Australian tour and hotly released new album Lekkerboy. You can expect to hear all the classics such as Australia Street, Cyclone and How To Fly plus the hits from the new album yet to be toured in New Zealand.
Drum & bass trailblazers Hybrid Minds are also set to bring their legendary live show to the 2023 festival titled Outline – it welcomes lead-singer Charlotte Haining for the first time alongside the duo on this side of the globe. This act is a ‘must see’ for drum and bass fans around the world and
something brand-new for Aotearoa.
“We’ve spoken about bringing our Outline live show to NZ for years, and it’s surreal that we’re finally doing it. To say we are excited is an understatement, it’s going to be incredible!” says Matt Lowe of Hybrid Minds.
The hip-hop line-up is sure to impress, with Denzel Curry, known for tracks such as The Game and Walkin’, this artist mixes trap, hip hop and even jazz to create his unique sound. Denzel has embarked on a 2022 world tour and has just dropped his new album Melt My Eyez See Your Future.
Grammy nominated, Indiana rap icon Freddie Gibbs heads to the festival showcasing his plethora of releases over recent years. Gibbs has survived the streets, crushed the music industry and is pushing all the boundaries with his acting debut in award-winning film ‘Down with the King’.
Talented pioneers of the Australian rap scene, OneFour are set to bring their A game to the summer festival after Covid stopped the previous attempt. The drill group has pushed Australian rap boundaries with their releases such as The Message and Spot the Difference and are known to sell out major venues in just minutes.
The electronic stage takes things to another level this summer with artist and producer SG Lewis, who has a lot to shout about since the success of ‘Times’, his debut album which features singles with Nile Rogers, Robyn & Channel Tres and Lucky Daye. This disco inspired artist has also worked with artists such as Dua Lipa, The Neptunes and more recently Elton John. He is also riding the wave of success from his smash hit remix of the Bee Gees classic More Than A Woman which has clocked 30 million streams in less than a year.
Live phenomenon and multi-instrumentalist Elderbrook is set to impress audiences with his debut Bay Dreams performance. Grammy-nominated Elderbook has collaborated with Camelphat, Diplo and Rudimental to name a few. The electronic stage wouldn’t be complete without legendary dubstep icon Flux Pavilion with the hits you all know and love, such as Bass Cannon, Savage and I Can’t Stop.
Drum & Bass fans will be impressed with four time award winner BOU on the line-up. This Manchester DJ and producer has countless number-one releases and is known for his creativity and excitement on the stage. He will be joined by Koven who have made waves in the digital space with millions of monthly listeners and featuring their cinematic bass tracks on games like Fortnight, Rocket League and more. UK drum and bass artist A.M.C has digitally dented the last decade with his intelligent, future-driven sets and ability to play on four decks at once, it’s no wonder he’s a Pioneer sponsored artist. If that’s not enough, the DNB A-Team has been called in for this including legends such as 1991, S.P.Y, A Little Sound and V O E.
Bay Dreams also welcomes a special guest to be announced in the coming weeks. Whilst they can’t give away too much, Organiser Mitch Lowe says “She is one of our favourite overseas artists at the moment and we can’t wait to have her massive energy on the mainstage.”
He goes on to say “As always Kiwi fans want to see their local heroes on stage, so we’ve put a big effort into supporting homegrown acts, and this year’s line-up is packed with local talent”.
Top local names featuring on the 2023 Mount Maunganui and Nelson line-up’s include Elipsa, Tori Levett, Ashez, Repair, Lil Bubblegum and DJ Sir-Vere, plus crowd favourites Beccie B, LMC, Ana Agius, Jess Rhodes, Kaylr, Kid Rey, Button B, Indecisive, K Mully, Persona, Ponz, Rayne, So&So, Twofold, Hail B2B Yams, Savvy, Suune, EReal Estate and NFX.
