Mel Parsons unveils edgy new single, 'Tired of Being You', from forthcoming album 'Slow Burn'

Award-winning singer-songwriter Mel Parsons has today released the upbeat and edgy new single Tired of Being You, the latest track from her forthcoming album Slow Burn, dropping September 16.

Listen to Tired of Being You HERE

With its hook-laden guitar riffs, driving rhythms and conversational vocal melody, Tired of Being You is indie-rock at its best. Parsons’ wry self-deprecating wit punches from the very first line: “You’re winning the busy-ness contest, looks like your diary’s jam-packed… look at all the flights in your flights app… wow you must really be killing it, another lunch in the lounge ok.”

Fun, playful but also raw, Tired of Being You addresses the ups and downs of being an indie touring artist. “It took a long time for me to be able to separate my personal happiness from the notion of career “success” and how one is perceived as a musician,” explains Parsons. “I still get caught up in it from time to time of course, so actually Tired of Being You is a piss-take on myself mostly; a reminder that the things we agonise over aren’t nearly as important as we make out.”

Also out today is the accompanying video, produced and co-directed by Parsons. In keeping with the spirit of the song, the visuals, shot by Caleb MacDonald and co-directed and edited by Adam Hogan, encapsulate a deliberately dead-pan-loser vibe.

“We wanted to keep it looking pretty low-fi,” says Parsons. “There was no make-up, we had one spotlight, and the party guests were all my extended family.”

Tired of Being You joins the already released singles Slow Burn, Carry On and Already Gone; tracks that showcase the stunning range of Mel Parsons and set the stage for the anticipated upcoming album Slow Burn, out September 16.

These tracks are the first new releases from Parsons since her critically-acclaimed album Glass Heart, which saw her win the coveted Best Folk Artist / Te Kaipuoro Taketake Toa at the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards. The record was also a finalist for the 2019 Taite Music Prize and Top 20 finalist at 2019’s APRA Silver Scroll Award.

The album’s accolades are among a number of significant milestones, which have contributed to Mel’s recognition on the international indie-folk scene. Her debut album Over My Shoulder and her sophomore album Red Grey Blue were both finalists for Folk Album of the Year (in 2009 and 2011, respectively). This is all in addition to her 2015 released album Drylands, which spent 51 weeks in the Independent Music NZ Album charts and won a Tui for Best Engineer in the same year. The full-time touring artist also garnered a Silver Scroll finalist nod for ‘Get Out Alive’ in 2015 and the 2016 NZCMA Best Song for Alberta Sun.
