Gold Coast-based genre-fusing party starters Bootleg Rascal have just unveiled tour dates and their stellar new cut Rescue Me – co-produced by ARIA Award Winning Producer Greg Stace (Boy & Bear, Gordi, Coterie) and the band themselves, with mixing by Ian Pritchett (Boo Seeka, Angus and Julia Stone, Kim Churchill).
Dreamy and reverb-soaked keys subtly hover above a resolutely-reversed drum sample, as Rescue Me swiftly snaps into its infectious verses. Driven by its steadfast rhythmic section, airy synths and the soul-infused vocals of endearing front man Carlos Lara, the brooding track’s dynamic dips momentarily, before launching into its brightly lit and feel-good, sing-a-long chorus. As the track unfolds, the deftly composed guitars of Jimmy Young shine luminously, setting up for the meticulously composed finale.
Carlos touches on the creative prowess behind Rescue Me: “Look, I probably won’t even read this press release, nor am I likely aware we even have a song coming out. My manager won’t be surprised if this placeholder quote is actually sent out to press. I really should read things, but I don’t because I’m a big bald f*ckhead!”
The release is accompanied by the candid music video, shot on QLD’s Gold Coast by Sam Brumby (Julia Jacklin, The Rubens, Ali Barter).
On the motivation behind the clip, Jimmy explains: “Every Saturday night, Carlos, Fraser and myself stay up late to have pillow fights and talk about the boys we like. During our time together, we also watch re-runs of Baywatch, The Sandlot Kids and clips of Kenny Powers slaying on a jet ski. We thought about what we could do for the music video and then it hit us – we should just pay someone else to sort out a concept for us.”
Over the course of September and October, the band will promote the release with seven performances across Australia and New Zealand, including stops in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Although their live schedule was largely disrupted on multiple occasions over the past two years, the band still managed to keep relatively active locally via an erratic schedule of boutique festivals, university parties and sold-out headline shows around Australia.
With their international touring plans impacted by the global pandemic, Bootleg Rascal worked to make the most of their time, releasing as much music as they could. This included an EP of B-sides titled Collaborations of Very Isolated Delinquents 19, and a conceptual LP Sloppy Seconds, largely comprised with renditions of previous works and new material with feature artists.
The payoff for their prolific approach was rewarded across a major spike in their streaming catalogue, with numbers for monthly listeners on Spotify alone rising from 200k to 450k – a 125% increase that has held tightly, almost a year after the release of Sloppy Seconds.
Since Bootleg Rascal’s mid-2013 inception, the group have frequently released critically praised and fan-adored music that has yielded them a career spanning close to 10 years.
Multiple tracks and videos have been supported by MTV, Rage, The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, NME, Spotify, Apple Music and added to high rotation on Australia’s largest youth radio station triple j. They’re a mainstay on the Australian and New Zealand live scene, and have sold-out multiple shows in France, UK, Netherlands, Germany, USA, New Zealand and Australia.
Rescue Me will be available worldwide on Friday, August 19.
