Pōneke indie pop group Pipsy share new single 'Hey Ok!'

Pipsy is the musical project of Paul Pouwels McMillan (they/them), a songwriter and producer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Pipsy crafts alternative pop with poise and precision. Their tracks are full with warm melodies and tender vocal harmonies. Listeners will be reminded of the devotional jangle made by British post-punks in the 80s, as well as the stirring synth pop of the early 2000’s.

Today Pipsy shares their new single Hey, Ok!, a snappy alt pop track, full of laidback la la las sung through a cheeky grin.

Hey, Ok! is inspired by stagnant relationships, and the freedom that comes when you walk away, accepting that you can't change other people.

"This song examines one-sided friendships - looking at their inevitable end," says Pouwels McMillan. "It particularly focuses on that moment where you realise you have to prioritise your own wellbeing - the moment that you simply say 'OK', accept the situation, and move on. I wanted to take a positive angle on these themes of acceptance, change, and growth. While the song reflects on the toxic aspects of these soured relationships, I still wanted it to sound like a celebration."

Pipsy - Hey, OK!

Sonically, Hey, OK!'s origins were as a classic rock track, but was flipped after Pouwels McMillan attended AMPS (Aotearoa Music Producer Series) in Tāmaki Makaurau at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios near the end of 2020.

"Over four days I met some contemporary producers/musicians working in Aotearoa who were so inspiring, including: Greg Haver, Tom Healy, Josh Fountain - and particularly Bic Runga, who's been really supportive of my songwriting and producing. With the bones of the song already written, I changed the track to more of an upbeat alt-pop number, inspired by Josh Fountain's production work with BENEE, Gus Dapperton, and in particular Mac DeMarco. Being a Pipsy song, I couldn't help adding shimmering synth-drone sounds of artists like Phoenix, and Tame Impala to get a spacey, fun vibe.

Following All You Ever Wanted, Hey, Ok! is the second single from Pipsy's upcoming debut album All You Ever Wanted.
