Black Velvet Butterfly and DateMonthYear - a collaboration for new single 'Slipping Through My Hands'

12 September 2022 - 0 Comments

New Zealand artists Black Velvet Butterfly from Auckland and DateMonthYear from Hamilton, have teamed up for a new single song release called Slipping Through My Hands.

Slipping Through My Hands is a piece born from the challenge of collaboration. DateMonthYear’s Trevor Faville constructed an instrumental track to which James Castady-Kristament from Black Velvet Butterfly added lyrics, guitar, vocals and production that took the piece into a typically idiosyncratic direction.

Slipping Through My Hands is a song that explores, in the first person perspective, one of the most powerful and enduring characters in 20th century literary and movie culture. It starts with a ‘what if’ conjecture, and brings it home with a personal and-dare we say “human”-perspective.

James Castady-Kristament from Black Velvet Butterfly says:

Slipping Through My Hands is about a melancholic vampire, having an existential crisis. After all, vampires are only immortal if they stay out of the sun and away from vampire hunters. Yet time zooms past so fast especially for vampires. You couldn't help but feel you were hurtling towards your inevitable bitter end. Like time was slipping through your hands, like sand”

Trevor Faville from DateMonthYear adds "This experience has been really rewarding. I had no real idea of the direction that this song would take, or what lyrical approaches it would inspire from James. I resonate with the idea of character based songwriting because it expands the lyrical possibilities- as I think we have shown here.”

Muzic.net.nz has given Slipping Through My Hands a four star review, stating: "Hopefully this is not the last we hear of this partnership, as this is incredibly effective".

Black Velvet Butterfly: is the latest musical project from jack of all trades James Castady-Kristament. The project began late 2019 and over two albums has explored different facets of goth rock and parallel genres such as Doom Metal, Dark Wave and Industrial.

Having just released his sophomore self titled album early in August 2022, Black Velvet Butterfly has built a sizeable listenership on Spotify and has garnered interest and air time from radio stations and podcasts from all over the world.

DateMonthYear is a cinematic, indie rock band from Hamilton, New Zealand. DateMonthYear have forged an independent music path for many years, releasing five albums (so far) and licensing music to television, movies, and advertising worldwide. Last two singles, March and Numbers have been played on hundreds of Independent radio stations worldwide, and the last major release was The Exodus Suite, an eclectic and eccentric take on movie soundtrack music described in Muzic.net.nz as “twists and shape-shifts with an informed sense of musical invention.”
