To round out Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, this Friday Diaz Grimm is dropping his new single, Land Bacc, a bilingual waiata feat. Fiveofive.
Diaz (Ngāwhā, Ngāpuhi), the world’s first indigeneous avatar rapper, says the single is a metaphor for repairing the wrongdoings of the past and their subsequent, ongoing effects.
Lyrics include, “Tupuna in my blood / mokopuna on my mind / get the whānau out the mud / no iwi left behind.”
Diaz says he wrote the track to spark a conversation about our fraught history, and encourage healthy discussions about our past and our future as a nation.
“This track encapsulates emotions that have been brewing throughout my life, and throughout generations. Speaking one’s truth and sparking conversation has long been a part of the art of Hip-Hop.”
Produced by Matt Miller (Parris Goebel, FLUF World) the track is the second single from his upcoming album: Māui & The Sin, and the second single from Disc One. Disc One comes from the future in 2071, and features upcoming NZ artists who Diaz believes to be the future of Aotearoa music.
One of these artists is Fiveofive, an emerging Māori RnB artist hailing from the Bay of Plenty. Diaz believes the enigmatic artist is a unique voice of her generation and has a place in paving the future of RnB music globally.
On producing the song, Miller says he was inspired by the God of War soundtrack, as well as Diaz and Fiveofive’s lyrical delivery - resulting in an anthemic, impactful track.
Māui & The Sin is made up of a two-disc record, the third in a series of seven albums. Disc two of Māui & the Sin represents the past and is set in 1771, taking inspiration from Diaz’s childhood influences, nature, and the history of his Māori culture.
The Land Bacc visualiser will drop September 28, and will reveal two Diaz avatars: one from 1771, and one from 2077. The visualizer is the album art for Māui & the Sin and the release of this video will coincide with the artwork of the Māui and The Sin AOTs dropping.
Land Bacc is available now on all platforms. Māui and the Sin AO tokens are available from Whitumecca.io.
