Music Industry Conversational Circle & Webinar

15 September 2022 - 0 Comments

New Zealand is made up of diverse peoples, groups and cultures. The potential to grow and develop a music industry that is representative of the plethora of influences is massive, yet largely untapped. As it stands, there is a growing community of talented musical artists of African descent (African, African-American, Caribbean and other parts of the African diaspora) who are contributing to an amalgamation of sounds coming out of the country.

To bridge the gap between the music industry and music professionals of African descent, Mukuka, Host of The Songwriter’s Diary Podcast and Makanaka, Founder of Afrodaze have collaborated on a project funded by The New Zealand Music Commission.

The Music Industry Conversational Circle & Webinar aims to identify the needs, experiences, and barriers faced by artists and music professionals of African descent with the intention of creating and sharing tools to support the development of a successful and sustainable career.

Hosted over two online sessions in September and October, the first session will be a conversational circle and the second session will be a webinar with New Zealand music industry professionals.

The conversational circle will be an opportunity to collect the necessary data and information about the community’s needs and experiences thus far in the industry. Information collected from conversations will be used to create a publicly available resource to support inclusiveness and diversity in the music sector and wider cultural industries.

Makanaka Tuwe, Researcher and Founder of Afrodaze, says the lack of information about the needs of artists and music professionals of African descent is a barrier to the type of support they can receive and access.

“When there’s limited information, there’s limited visibility of the experiences that people have. This fosters inequities and means needs cannot be addressed adequately. Aotearoa, New Zealand has a unique opportunity to house exciting genres that are distinctly rooted in place and the coming together of many cultures. There is work to be done to cultivate that, from resource equity, knowledge building, community engagement, building new systems and supporting existing infrastructures. My hope is that this project contributes to equitable outcomes of musical artists of African descent and that we can do our part to support the growth of the local music industry”, she says.

The webinar will consist of a panel of six industry speakers and be centered on navigating the music industry. Speakers will cover a range of topics including, but not limited to, strategic planning of releases, media engagement tools and understanding the business side of music (accounts, administration tools).

Mukuka Musowa, Artist Manager and Host of The Songwriter’s Diary Podcast, says it’s important to create spaces that help support artist’s careers.

“When I started The Songwriter’s Diary Podcast, a space where I interview music professionals about their journey in the New Zealand music industry, I noticed a knowledge gap between musicians and industry. Unfortunately, that gap is even wider for artists of African descent and other minoritised communities. This has led me to question how I can help other artists by creating spaces that educate and help fill the knowledge gap within my community”, she says.
