Music News - Toi Maori launches Kaupapa Maori Music Week (28-31 October) in Wellington

22 October 2008 - 0 Comments

The last week of October promises to be a celebration of contemporary Mâori music in the Capital.

Pûatatangi, the Music Committee of Toi Mâori Aotearoa* has organised a programme of music workshops and three great live shows, finishing with PAO PAO PAO on Friday 31 October 2008.

Pûatatangi Chariperson, Ngahiwi Apanui says the week's a great chance for people to enjoy the diverse talents of contemporary Mâori musicians.

Ngahiwi says, "Like all artists, Mâori musicians call on a huge range of influences but they draw a lot of their musical inspiration from their culture, language, musical history and contemporary issues that impact us as Mâori. It certainly gives kaupapa Mâori musicians a unique voice."

The week kicks off with a two-day events management workshop called Te Ara Pûoro - the World of Mâori Music (28-29 October). There's a special APRA members night (29 October), open to all APRA members and a music mentoring session for secondary school students (31 October).

Public Performances

Fourteen performing acts are coming in from all over Aotearoa to perform at three great live shows:

Pûoro Unplugged (29 October) is a night of acoustic magic with guitar legend Billy TK Senior, soprano Timua Brennan, jazz guitarist Steve Rangihuna and the versatile Rodger Cunningham.

HIP HOP AOTEAROA (30 October) brings together the fresh sounds of Mâori hip hop featuring Princess ATAK, Infinite Rensta & Dj Kinetic, Tyna with his band and 4Corners.

PAO PAO PAO (31 October) showcases the big achievers for 2008 and is a great musical experience for everyone. This year's line-up is Brannigan Kaa, Ariana Tikao, Pacific Curls, Whirimako Black and Ruia.
