October/November News
Congratulations P-Money! His single Everything featuring Vince Harder hit the # 1 spot in New Zealand singles chart twice in the last month, became the # 2 most played song in the country (behind Kings of Leon), and has gone Gold (7500+ sales). It’s the second track distributed by DRM NZ to reach #1 purely on digital sales (the first was Tiki’s Always on My Mind). After the # 1 success of Everything, the Dirty boys got together for a little remix, rap style, featuring Scribe, PNC, David Dallas and Vince Harder.
Applause also goes to those from the IMNZ whanau who took home Tuis from the 43rd Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. International Achievement Awards were presented to Savage and Flight of the Conchords; and the Conchords also took out the coveted Nokia Album of the Year category. Other winners were Opshop, Tiki, Parachute Band, Brunettes’ video director Ian Hart, Scribe, Recloose, Ruia and Michael Houston. And Fur Patrol’s Julia Deans teamed up with Anika Moa, Lani Purkis, (Elemeno P) and Greta Anderson (Superette) as the Fast Women, who paid homage to NZ Herald Legacy Award winners Straitjacket Fits with a rendition of 'She Speeds'.
The fifth Music Managers Forum awards were held last week, and we’d like to congratulate the winners: Lorraine Barry, Ingrid Round, Flip Grater and Carthew Neale, all of whom work with IMNZ artists too. The Industry Champion Award went to the NZ Music Commission who support both the MMF and IMNZ. The inaugural Waiata Maori Awards are being held on Wednesday November 12 and a good number of IMNZ-related artists are nominees: Carol Storey, Ruia, Tiki Taane, Young Sid, House of Shem and Moana Maniapoto – we wish you all well.
Metal band Tainted have announced their affiliation with Jackson Guitars USA following an official endorsement by the iconic guitar company. This adds members Tim Facoory, Linly Baxter and Sean McCurrie to an enviable list of artists who use and play Jackson Guitars including Mark Morton and John Campbell (Lamb of God), Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden), Matt Tuck (Bullet For My Valentine), Chris Beattie (Hatebreed) and Phil Demmel (Machine Head). Catch Tainted on their Path off Vengeance tour this month, celebrating the release of their second album ‘Carved and Created’.
Minisnap (featuring members of The Bats) is making waves in the USA – radio waves predominantly, with tracks from their latest album ‘Bounce Around’ added to a hefty swag of CMJ stations and getting into many stations’ Top Twenty adds in its first week of US release. The album was also noted by Billboard magazine, who said that “‘From start to finish ‘Bounce Around’ is classic New Zealand pop”. Last month the Kiwi contingent threw down their challenge for the best party at CMJ (last year’s event was voted one of NME’s 10 coolest parties of the festival!) This year’s showcase was hosted by the NZ Music Commission and NZ On Air, heads-upped by the Limewire music blog and MC’d by Rhys Darby aka Murray Hewitt (the NZ Cultural Attaché and Flight of the Conchords’ TV manager); the bands were The Naked And Famous, Bang Bang Eche, Cut Off Your Hands and The Ruby Suns.
Having just released their fourth studio album ‘Solid Ground’ in Europe through Sonar Kollektiv, the eight-piece Black Seeds have flown north to embark on with their European release tour. The tour comes on the back of performances in July at some of Europe's biggest festivals including Roskilde, Lovebox, Summerjam as well as sellout shows at London's Electric Ballroom, The Melkweg, Amsterdam, and many more. Fat Freddy’s Drop are also currently on tour in Europe and the UK in preparation for the worldwide release of their new album now due for release early next year - they are visiting Portugal, France, Ireland, Denmark, Germany amongst others before heading back to the southern hemisphere in December.
Kora, Unity Pacific, Katchafire and Moving Productions’ label head Dave Allen are featured in a story which screened on Al Jazeera English’s show ‘The Playlist’ about the influence of reggae on music in New Zealand. The network goes out globally to more than 120 million homes. US folk rock pop act the Dodos have grabbed our very own Ruby Suns to tour with them in Europe this month and are bringing them back for a mouth-watering double-billing on all their NZ dates which have been announced for January.
There is a whole pre-Christmas stocking full of great new albums hitting the shelves and digital stores right now. Following the success of their single K, Auckland’s Tutts have released their long-awaited debut album ‘Get in the Club’, produced by ex-Skeptics member Nick Roughan (Shihad, Headless Chickens, Dimmer). After forming in early 2006, the band supported The Strokes and played to a 6000-strong crowd at the Big Day Out 2007 before holing up and promising not to emerge until their record was finished. ‘Rhombus’ is the self-titled third album from the Wellington stalwarts, following up 2002’s celebrated ‘Bass Player’ and 2005’s ‘Future Reference’. Rhombus have won respect for their energetic shows at home as well as in Australia and Japan; and they’ve launched into a nationwide tour, criss-crossing Aotearoa and Australia and bringing the sunshine with 20 concerts over seven weeks.
‘Elevator Musiq’ is the new album from Nesian Mystik and the band describe it as “our line in the sand, it says "this is who we are world...watch this space"”. In the process they have drawn influences from jazz, reggae, singer/songwriter and disco, but with the common thread throughout being truly Nesian; the band figure there’s something here for everyone, making this all-rounder the Chris Cairns of albums. It features their hit singles Dancefloor and Nesian 101. ‘Day Dreams Start Fires’ is a collaboration between rapper/poet Tourettes and 12 New Zealand artists including Misery, Askew, Deus, Cut Collective, Kerry Anne Lee, Gasp and more. The exhibition will be up from October 31 to November 15, and is available for viewing from 7pm each night at The Basement (Lower Greys Ave).
Cobra Khan emerged from the wreckage of NZ hard hitters Sommerset, Day One and Balance and released the acclaimed mini-album ‘Sleepless Lions’ in 2006. Featuring Milon Williams (ex-Sommerset), guitarist Ben Lee, Evan Short (Concord Dawn), Sarah Fox and Andy Morton (ex-Day One), Cobra Khan have quite a punk rock pedigree, but the new album sounds unlike anything the band have been involved with before – ‘Helgorithms’ reveals an appreciation for guitar-driven tracks that are refreshingly removed from mainstream notions about what contemporary metal, punk, and rock are supposed to sound like. Hardcore heavyweights Antagonist AD, formerly Antagonist, are back with a new name and a new album - ‘We Are the Dead’, released by ElevenfiftySeven in both NZ and Australia (via Trial & Error); it’s the follow up to 2006’s celebrated ‘These Cities, Our Graves’. The band have toured consistently, playing alongside such internationals as Hatebreed, Madball, Agnostic Front, Unearth, Comeback Kid, Throwdown, notable locals The Bleeders and Blindspott, and they’ve travelled to Australia no less than 6 times, touring with locals and internationals including Most Precious Blood, Have Heart, Parkway Drive and Carpathian.
Whilst honing their skills at Auckland University's Jazz School, several members of the Shades also paid their dues by performing with such soul/funk luminaries as One Million Dollars and The Hot Grits. Their debut EP, released in March, spawned two radio hits and has now been made available to the masses courtesy of Border Music. The Coco Solid back catalogue – ‘Denim & Leather’, ‘Denim & Leisure’ (remixes) and ‘Gentlemen Prefer Bombz’ is also now available through Border Music. The release of Ziko's debut album 'Ghosthips' is currently being celebrated with a national tour. The Auckland quartet has backgrounds in funk, soul, downbeat electronica and alt-rock, and features bassist Richie “Mr President” Setford (One Million Dollars) along with Kris Baudry, “Dr.” Nick Boyle and Simon Turner.
His solo album ‘The Crowd’ has hit the shelves and his first single Never Too Late has been in the top 10 radio airplay charts for seven straight weeks; now former Zed front man Nathan King is to showcase his new collection of tunes in a one-off Auckland gig on Wednesday November 19 at St Matthew in the City. A very limited edition white vinyl 7” from The Datsuns featuring the single Human Error from their brand new ‘Headstunts’ album is out now – if you would like one they are genuinely limited in New Zealand to only 60 copies! ‘Headstunts’ is an anagram of The Datsuns, and features new drummer Ben Cole. Eru Dangerspiel is the solo project of former Trinity Roots drummer Riki Gooch, and ‘Great News for the Modern Man’ combines his renowned drum/percussion talents with his latent songwriting abilities plus contributing talents from the likes of Laughton Kora (Kora), Anna Coddington, Parks (Ladi6), Chip Matthews (Anika Moa, Opensouls), Recloose, Lewis McCallum, Julien Dyne (Opensouls), Ned Ngatae (Tyra & The Tornadoes), Jo Lindsay (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Jonathan Crayford and Isaac Aesili (Solaa).
From freestyling at house parties in the late ‘90s, Mikey Rockwell has journeyed a long way to pull together the elements of his debut album ‘Free Slaves’. Guests include Huia Hamon, MC Speakeasy (Kolab) and MC Bjorn (Opensouls). Mikey has performed all over NZ with DJ’s in clubs, as frontman for live jazz/funk fusion bands the Timothy William Trio and The Funk Clinic, and rapped with Kolab at their regular live Auckland shows – which led to a national tour and co-producing/engineering their debut album ‘What Comes Next’. While recording ‘Free Slaves’, a demo of the song Turn Ya Dial Up attracted a nomination for Best Unsigned Artist at the 06/07 Aus/NZ Urban Music Awards, and Mikey has also been performing as a guest vocalist with The Shades.
In the late 1980s, composer Warwick Blair was already being described as “one of New Zealand’s most original musical thinkers” (NZ Herald) and the “enfant terrible of New Zealand Music” (NZ Listener). In 1987 he performed at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival with legendary Greek polymath Iannis Xenakis using UPIC (an early electronic music system) and in 1990 his Aotea Centre-opening orchestral performance The Good Seeds Are So Small was proclaimed concert of the year by Rip It Up magazine. His latest work ‘Stars’ in performance is a 24-hour work drawing from gandharva music, which applies particular qualities to specific times of the day. It features electronic backing plus vocals by Sandhya Rao Badakere, and is available now as ‘album edits’ of the 8 sections. There will be performances happening around the country over the next couple of months.
Tommy Ill and Buck Beauchamp have just released their ‘Matchsticks’ EP; we’ll let Tommy tell you more: “Hello, my name is Tommy Ill, and I am a rapper from Wellington…I don't rap about guns, drugs or bling. I'm more likely to rap about…girls and drinking and phone bills. In 2007 I put out an EP called ‘Toast and Tea Kettles’…two of the songs got nominated for bNet Awards. My trusty sidekick Buck Beauchamp and I play a whole bunch of shows, and really good looking people come to those shows. I've made live guest appearances with many bands including So So Modern, Cut Off Your Hands, Holiday With Friends and Heat Like Me. Peaches once told me I sounded like Beck, but I didn't believe her. Lovefoxxx from CSS begged me to come to Auckland with her so she could see me do my guest rap with So So Modern again. Then she poured Jagermeister in my beer. It was a good day.”
On ‘New Zealand Poets In Song’, siblings Anna and Matthew Leese sing songs by Anthony Ritchie. Ritchie’s numerous posts over the last 2 decades include Composer in Residence with the Dunedin Sinfonia and Senior Lecturer in composition at the University of Otago; his compositions have been performed by the major New Zealand orchestra and ensembles. His piano quartet Oppositions was performed in Hong Kong at the Asian World Music Days Festival in 2007 and his Clarinet Quintet has been performed several times by the NZ String Quartet. The songs on ‘New Zealand Poets In Song’ span 26 years, and signify many collaborations between Anthony Ritchie and various New Zealand poets including James K. Baxter, Sam Hunt, Hone Tuwhare, Cilla McQueen, Bill Manhire, Keri Hulme, Ruth Dallas and Bernadette Hall. And in poetry of another vein, the late Kohine Ponika wrote some of the most popular Maori songs ever written, yet few know that these songs, written over a period of 50 years, were all the work of one composer who could not read a note of music - over the years hundreds of kapa haka groups have sung Kohine's songs. On ‘Ka Haku Au - A Poet's Lament’, Maori lyrics and catchy melodies are honoured by a fusion of jazz, rhythm and blues, with the voices and musicianship of Kohine's whanau and friends featuring Kui Wano, Rawiri Alexander and Brent Turner.
The Parachute Band’s new album ‘Technicolor’ debuted at #12 on the NZ iTunes album charts, #1 on NZ iTunes Inspirational charts and #10 on the U.S. Christian/Gospel charts. The band was on tour in South Africa through September/October and is currently visiting the Parachute Music sponsored ADP project in Rwanda; they’ve also completed extensive tours of the U.S, Canada and Asia. The Parachute Festival has announced further acts to play P09 including Rapture Ruckus, Mumsdollar, Nathan King and Kingston, joining over 150 acts from home and abroad. This year they aim to sponsor 1000 children for World Vision and raise money for a new medical facility in Rwanda, and on the home front are hooking up with Women’s Refuge to support the work they do.
After 10 years of local and international tours and a clutch of bNet Awards, soulstress and hip hop queen Ladi6 has released her highly anticipated album ‘Time Is Not Much’. Produced by Parks and Mu (Fat Freddy’s Drop), and recorded at the Drop in Lyall Bay, it’s a family affair, with cousins Tyra Hammond and Scribe lending their vocal talents, while respected local musicians such as Julien Dyne (Opensouls), Chip Matthews, (Anika Moa, Opensouls), Jo Lindsay (Fat Freddy’s Drop) and Riki Gooch (Eru Dangerspiel) feature too. Ladi6 has guested on tracks from acts such as Shapeshifter, Scribe, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Opensouls, and she began her musical career as part of NZ’s first all-girl hip-hop group Sheelahroc (who had a hit with If I Gave You The Mic), and moved from Christchurch to Auckland with her band Verse 2. She has toured Europe with Fat Freddy’s Drop, and has had solo performances in Paris, Berlin and London; she’s also toured Australia with Scribe as well as headlining her own shows there; and her album has just debuted at #6 in the New Zealand album chart.
Once again Luke Buda follows the birth of a child with the release of an album! Looking for the name of his 2nd son, Buda travelled deep into the raging belly of ‘Vesuvius’. A key songwriter for The Phoenix Foundation, Buda has released 5 albums with them, and Vesuvius follows his ‘Special Surprise’ solo debut (’06), also on Arch Hill Recordings; he’s introducing his new melodic babies on tour, accompanied by his friends Cassette. The eccentric range of Nigel Gavin’s musical projects is matched only by his virtuosity with stringed instruments. ‘A Job with the Circus’ is Nigel’s first “in concert" DVD and is produced and directed by Costa Botes (the Windy City Strugglers’ film ‘Struggle No More’) with sound by Robbie Duncan. Siren Junkies formed in 2004; they’re an Auckland based rock/pop 4-piece who’ve played with the likes of Goodshirt, Goldenhorse, Anika Moa, Breaks Co-Op and The Rabble, as well as being the only New Zealand act selected to play at Canada’s largest music festival NXNE in 2006. Their debut album ‘Fascinate’ is out now; lead singer Nikki Hartnett-Clarke is prominent in defining the sound.
The Kingites are an Auckland-based hip hop/reggae/soul group, who have supported big name internationals and rocked stages at local festivals. ‘Feathers Of Peace’ is their debut album (following their debut ‘Kingites’ EP), and it combines conscious lyricism with melody and an unsettling instrumental bed. The Kingites are currently performing release shows around the North Island. Also from Moving Production, the sleeve art of ’Conscious Roots 5’ is a painting of Rua Kenana, the prophet and visionary spiritual leader of the Tuhoe nation. The album Includes an ideal mix of known artists such as Tiki Taane, Katchafire, Cornerstone Roots, House Of Shem and Tahuna Breaks as well as unreleased offerings from The Native Sons, Tenement Yard and Ska Child, and also includes a rare offering from Rio Hunuki-Hemopo taken from a 12" vinyl release.
In 2006 Chanelle Davis released her debut album ‘Better Than Alone’. The track Your Only One was a finalist in the New Zealand Songwriters’ Trust Award 06, Alight came 2nd in the Pacific Songwriting Competition ballad category, and she won the 2007 New Zealand Songwriters' Trust award with Dear Jon. In 2007, Chanelle performed at the Qantas Television Awards, Tauranga and Hamilton Christmas in the Parks, was featured on the cover of UNO magazine, and went on a successful six week summer tour with fellow singer/songwriter Daniel Munro. Her new album ‘Since Yesterday’ was produced by Kovi Mongelli and Chanelle, and mastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound in New York; the range of sounds she uses includes a tap-dancer.
Barry Saunders of the Warratahs releases his new album ‘Zodiac’ on November 17 on Mana Music (Ode/DRM). As with his previous acclaimed ‘Red Morning’ album, ‘Zodiac’ has been produced by David Long (the Muttonbirds), with musicians including Long, Craig Terris, Jules Desmond, fellow Warratah Nik Brown and backing vocals from Samuel Flynn Scott and Caroline Easther. "Originally it was to be four songs toward a ‘best of’ album, but the baby started to grow and we ended up with a new album," says Barry. "I have a version of The Phoenix Foundation’s Going Fishing. I love the lyrics and have turned it into pretty much a country ballad." Watch this space as live dates will be announced soon.
Space Case were one of the leading jazz funk bands in New Zealand in the early 80’s and have claimed legendary status. Their original albums are currently selling on Trade Me for $50 and more! Ode has decided to give the enthusiast all three in one set, as together they tell a story. The first one, apart from causing a furore with its controversial cover at the time, laid the roots for the great group, featuring Murray McNabb, Frank Gibson Jnr, Brian Smith and Bruce Lynch. Number Two continued the story with additions of Kim Paterson, Claudio Roditi, Andy Brown and Ron McClure, and the story ends at Album Three with a solidification of the group back to its roots with Murray McNabb, Frank Gibson Jnr, Brian Smith, Kim Patterson and (the late) Andy Brown. The music may span from 1981 to 1985 but still sounds relevant today – a testament to the calibre of musicianship involved.
St Andrews on the Terrace Concert is a charity fundraiser for The Wellington Free Ambulance service; it will feature Yulia with the Wellington Male Voice Choir, with Yulia as guest vocalist on favourites plus material from her albums ‘Into the West’ and ‘Montage’. Yulia also performed in aid of the Wellington food bank, Cholmondeley Children's Home in Christchurch, StarJam in Auckland and the Starlight Foundation in Wellington amongst others. Yulia's management has also enlisted the services of LA music producer David Kershenbaum to develop a single specifically for USA radio; this month Kershenbaum received USA music industry recognition with a Lifetime Achievement award as a Music Producer at the LA Music Awards. He has worked with the likes of Tracy Chapman, Janet Jackson, Bryan Adams, Cat Stevens, Duran Duran and many others.
The Parihaka International Peace Festival will again take place at the historic Parihaka Pa on January 9 - 11, 2009; over two dozen acts have been announced, including Katchafire, Kora, Little Bushman and SJD. The Parihaka International Peace Festival features two stages, a dance music zone, film festival, speakers and eco forums plus traditional healing, poetry, children's area and much more; the kaupapa for this year's festival remains "Peace, Justice and Eco Responsibility". The Blue Lake Music Festival (which was the Blue Lake Dub Experience) is back, this time on Saturday November 29, 2008, at the same beautiful venue, the Blue Lake Domain in Rotorua. Special guests DLT and DT are going to open up the stage with headliners Rhombus, dDub and Little Bushman, Che Fu, supported by 1814 and The Midnights with more acts to be confirmed. The last week of October was a definite celebration of contemporary Maori music in the Capital which culminated in PAO PAO PAO on Friday 31st. Fourteen acts gathered from around New Zealand to perform at three great live shows; they included Billy TK Senior, Tyna with his band, 4Corners, Pacific Curls, Whirimako Black and Ruia.
At the 2008 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards Opshop picked up the awards for the Highest Selling Album for ‘Second Hand Planet’ and Most Played Song on New Zealand Radio for Maybe: this song received over 10,000 spins last year. This goes with their APRA Silver Scroll Award for Song of The Year and APRA award for the year’s Most Performed Work for One Day, which has (via 174 East/DRM) just gone platinum (15,000+ sales). It seems that New Zealand can't get enough of Opshop, so they’re touring New Zealand's top summer locations; joining them on the road are high energy rockers Autozamm, who’ve just released sophomore album ‘Drama Queen’. For 2 shows they also share the stage with Westie comedian Ewen Gilmour and The Feelers. Opshop also join Dave Dobbyn and Anika Moa as headliners on the bill for the 2009 annual More FM Winery Tour in February.
One of New Zealand’s hottest rapper’s right now, Young Sid (nominated for Best Hip Hop Album at the 2008 Tui Awards, and nominated at the Waiata Maori Music Awards 2008 for both Best Male Maori Artist and Best Maori Urban Artist) has been touring extensively throughout New Zealand and Australia, and now with Miracle Young Sid - accompanied by Mr Sicc - is embracing the ever-growing Korean hip hop community within New Zealand, courtesy of Young Sid’s recent collaboration with pioneering Korean-New Zealand mainstays DaeMang Productions (DMP). Miracle marks the intertwining of cultures live on stage at New Zealand’s premier Korean hip hop club, Bacio on Auckland’s K’Road.
To celebrate the release of his latest album, SJD is bringing the Spring 2008 ‘Dayglo Spectres’ Tour to a dancefloor is near you soon. Like the man says, best get moving or move aside! SJD with full 6-piece band plays the Backstage on November the 8th with special guests R.A.D.S.Y.S.T.E.M. No strobe is left unturned as Dayglo Spectres, the fifth SJD long-player, combines the bombastic beats of the ground-breaking early albums with the melodies that characterise more recent SJD releases. And in other news from the Round Trip Mars family, The Naked and Famous are joining Coco Solid as locals supporting French/Vietnamese producer Onra, who is gaining international attention for his unique musical take on East meets West.
A tasty bunch of bands and Savvy Promotions have come together to revive the All Ages music scene in Auckland; now people of all ages can witness some bands they might not usually get to experience. On the bill are So So Modern, The Naked And Famous, The Shocking Pinks, Mean Street and Moron Says What?!; you can catch them at the Ellen Melville Hall in Auckland city. Amongst the second round of Big Day Out announcements are P-Money, Cornerstone Roots, The Horsemen Family, Ethical, Brand New Math and George and Queen. The final show of Reb Fountain’s ‘Holster’ album release tour is spurning traditional venues in favour of something a bit ‘harder-hitting’ – she and her Bandits playing alongside Bond Street Bridge, The Broken Heartbreakers and Sleepy Kid are playing in the ring of the Auckland Boxing Association in Mt Eden on November 21.
Bill Direen and The Bilders hit the tar seal again this year with a new album called ‘Chrysanthemum Storm’ (Powertool Records). The band lineup is the same as that which played the critically acclaimed tour last year; keyboardist Andrew McCully joined the Bilders in mid-tour last year and he and Bill will play a cabaret-style opening set at some venues. On Labour Weekend Labretta Suede and the Motel 6 supported legendary Christchurch punk band The Androidss, who hadn’t played Auckland in 27 years, and they’re about to release their new EP ' LOON-A-TIKI' later this month and will be showcasing it on a quick national tour. The Auckland show is a matinee in the sun complete with dancers, hot rod cars, a BBQ and smashing outfits.
The line-up for next year’s 3-day Womad festival in New Plymouth (March 13-15) looks to be typically inclusive: Africa, India, the Pacific, Europe, Cambodia via LA, the Pacific, indigenous Australia and more are all represented. Local acts announced include Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shona Laing, Little Bushman and Moana and the Tribe; they join a massive international line up including The Guyto Monks, (Tibet/Australia), Geoffrey Gurrumal (ex-Yothu Yindi), Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara Trio (UK), Mercedes Sosa (Argentina) and Natacha Atlas (Egypt / UK) and many more.
