The November funding decisions for NZ On Air are:
Music Videos
This is the third Music Video funding round for the 2008/2009 funding year (which started on 01 July 2008). This funding year, we are budgeting on doing 170 music videos, which is the same as last year. That means that we can do, on average, 28-29 projects in each of the six funding rounds through the year.
This time we got 135 applications. Of the 135 applications, 49 songs made it to the first shortlist, based on feedback from the music television broadcasters when we tested the songs.
However, we can't afford to do 49 projects and so, as usual, we had to go through a second shortlisting and prioritising process, as a result of which we will do 27 projects in this round, making up a bit of a deficit as a result of funding 30 in each of the first two funding rounds this year.
The successful applications are listed below. Each project will get $5,000 to make a music video, subject to our standard terms and conditions of music video funding.
Decisions are based on the airplay potential of the song and the strategic value of the music video to the radio airplay campaign. Airplay potential is measured by first testing the songs with the music video broadcasters, and then we factor in current radio priorities.

New Recordings
This is the second New Recording funding round for the 2008/2009 funding year. This funding year, like last year, we are planning on funding 20 New Recording projects at $10,000 each - $5,000 to record a radio single and an additional (conditional) $5,000 for a music video to support the release of the song to radio. That means that we are looking for, on average, just five projects in each of the four funding rounds in this funding year.
In this second funding round for the new year, we received 267 applications. The first shortlisting gave us 46 songs, the second reduced the number of contenders to 18 and the third gave us the final ten. Each of the final ten was then invited to give us more information about the project and their plans for the song.
The projects with the best combination of commercial radio airplay potential and a convincing plan for the recording, release and promotion of the song get the $10,000 new artist funding package. In this second funding round for the new year, we will do six projects. The six successful projects from the November round are
- Bionic Pixie - 'Broken Machine'
- Iva Lamkum - 'No'
- Josh Leys - 'To Be Creating'
- Miriam Clancy - 'When I Do'
- Seth Haapu - 'Owe You Nothing'
- The Black Dahlias - 'Do You Wanna'
Radio Hits
[based on airplay in the July/September 2008 quarter]
In this Radio Hits funding round, we will do the usual five projects.
The five that we will do this time are songs that have picked up significant airplay on radio in the third quarter of 2008. Each project will get $5,000 (or the actual cost of recording and releasing the single, whichever is the lesser), subject to our standard terms and conditions of Radio Hits funding.
Decisions are based on analysing the RadioScope airplay charts, which are in turn based on airplay returns from 100+ radio stations around the country. However, remember that songs that have picked up significant airplay in this quarter but have already been funded via the Phase Four Album or New Recordings schemes are not also eligible for Radio Hits funding.
- AKA Brown - 'The Only One'
- J Williams - 'Blow Ya Mind'
- Delani - 'Another Day'
- Mumsdollar - 'Sticks & Stones'
- The Dukes - 'Time Is A Train'
