Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) based AfroSoul artist Ch! Nonso’s debut single Ka Home from his forthcoming EP Kola Nuts & Chardonnay is set to release Thursday, 10 November. The single is accompanied by a visual that captures what appears to be the distant memory of childhood or the dreamy looping of a time, place and feeling that was and that will never be.
First written in 2006, Ka Home was initially a track Ch! Nonso was working on for the boyband he was a part of in university. At the time one of the three members of the band was leaving Nigeria and Ch! Nonso was reflecting on the changes he was witnessing in his personal circle, as well as surroundings.
Since then, the artist moved throughout Nigeria until arriving in Aotearoa (New Zealand) in 2015, adding layers of meaning to the constant state of flux that the notion of home is.
In the chorus he sings “you can go on and on looking for fun mana ọ nwerọ ebe ga-adị gị ka home”, the Igbo lyrics loosely translating to “there'll be no place that can be like home”.
Although home can feel like an elusive idea and the artist recognises that not everyone has pleasant memories of home, he hopes ‘Ka Home’ can be a springboard for listeners to reflect, confront or console their notion of home.
Reminiscent of acapella boy bands, Ka Home is a smooth and meditative track that infuses double bass, snaps and vocals. Produced by Unchained XL (Mazbou Q), Ka Home is Ch! Nonso’s debut single and a full circle moment for the artist.
