Born out of a teenage dream back in 2011, Aotearoa’s heaviest underdogs Seas of Conflict refuse to see their 11th year out without proving why their name has always been held in such high regard amongst the country’s underground community, unleashing their single Consume ft. Lana Paige, accompanied by a nightmarish fever-dream of an official video.
Returning to familiar territory through a hyperbolic lens, the duo (Kody Naidoo, Nick Martin), see 2022 out with Consume, a ferociously captivating song about self-reflection and living under false pretences; armed with the highly regarded Zorran Mendonsa (New Way Home, Saving Grace, Crooked Royals), and George Lever (Loathe, Sleep, Token, Thornhill) behind audio production duties.
Revered indigenous director Amber Beaton (Beastwars, Blindfolded And Led To The Woods, Chelsea Wolfe) lends her filmmaking talents to the music video once again, taking the viewer through an appropriately chaotic whirlwind of colour and visual trickery as we see Kody Naidoo (vocals), Nic Martin (instruments), and guest vocalist Lana Paige deliver everything they have to the song’s infectious performance.
Since their formation, Seas of Conflict have never compromised on quality; whether it’s in the studio, on-stage, or in front of the camera, they have always maintained that time and love are their most powerful and valuable investments. It was their 2017 EP Vestige that unlocked a new flame of motivation in the metalcore act; instantly topping iTunes charts and raking in perfect review scores, the whole country understood that a point of difference was finally being presented to the metal scene. Swiftly followed-up by singles Monachopsis and the two-part epic Eventide and Prometheus in 2019, live performances were personally requested to support international acts such as In Flames, Northlane, Twelve Foot Ninja, Alien Weaponry, and more; as well as picking up the attention of listeners in Australia and the United States.
The sombre delivery of last year’s single XII.IX revealed a vulnerable side to the band’s story. With a refined line-up, visuals that demanded attention, and a heartbroken narrative, Seas simply asked for patience while they turned a new page and reset their focus. Despite the track being the band’s most emotional and melodic, breaking into the Official Hot NZ Singles Chart and perfect reviews proved that Seas’ most turbulent year was worth persevering through.
Sure to scratch the itch of every rock and metal listener, the song signals a new era for Seas of Conflict, one they have been meticulously preparing for in the form of a conceptual debut album.
“While Consume - alongside our most recent singles - was an obvious choice for a promotional release; these songs all have a very special place amongst something much more grand than anything we have done before”, says Nic.
“Kody and I have been laser-focused on Seas’ first album for a long time, and it’s fair to say that Consume is an appropriate way to showcase all of the elements you might expect in a full-length release, without under-or-overselling the diversity and dynamics that we spend so much energy on. Kody has really gone above and beyond with his story-telling and vocal delivery over these past years, his ability to dive deep into his emotions and experiences, and marry them so seamlessly with the music I pitch to him, still gives me goosebumps.”
