Inspired by the nostalgic 70's disco era, Lost & Found is a fun, dance-ready, feelgood anthem aptly timed for summer. Amongst the groove-filled production and Lou’ana’s impeccable vocal performance, is also a deep meaning of staying true to oneself.
“It’s about finding my way out of the chaos of life and back to myself,” reflects Lou’ana. “I look to ancient knowledge and mother earth for guidance and realise it’s through the darkness that I may find a way to the light. Life can feel like an emotional rollercoaster, but grounding in myself can help me realise the motion of life and step into my own empowered rhythm.”
Made with support from NZ On Air, recorded and mixed at Hum Studios in Auckland and mastered by Mike Gibson, Lou’ana wrote Lost & Found in the first lockdown after discovering a love for roller skating.
“I had this spare time and so decided to learn to use my impulse buy, roller skates,” says Lou’ana. “I fell in love with skating! I would put on disco music and skate around my garage. I soon wrote this song, inspired by the strange tumultuous ride the pandemic and life put me through. I feel like my tarot cards, witchy practices, disco music and rollerskates got me through lockdown.”
True to the inspiration behind the song, is the accompanying video also out today. Directed by Anna Rose Duckworth and funded by the UNESCO Auckland CIty of Music, Equalizer Woman in Music grant, the video captures the song’s playful, upbeat energy but also serves to convey its contemplative lyrics through the visual representation of spiritual themes and rituals.
“After a week of work, we see a woman move through her beauty rituals to unwind, put on her skates, pull some tarot cards which unknowingly predicts the run of the eve,” says Lou’ana of the video. “Then her girls/coven arrive for a skate, dance and fun.”
“I wasn't a pro skater by any means; I had to learn how to do a burlesque chair dance on roller skates which was mega hard! I practiced like crazy in the two weeks leading up.”
Watch the video HERE - LIVE 7PM THURSDAY NOVEMBER 24.
Lost & Found makes way for an exciting year ahead for one of Aotearoa’s most mesmerising artists. As Lou’ana explains: “I love to create art/music that moves me and feels good, then pair it with words that either tell a story or share an experience or deep contemplations. As an artist, I like to just create art that resonates, and this is what resonates with me right now. Who knows what's next!”
