208 litres of paint, 8 truckloads of staging and construction equipment and 6,500 metres of scaffolding is just the start of the construction process underway in Wellington’s Town Hall to create a purpose-built jazz club - the Pacific Blue Note - for the new Wellington Jazz Festival.
Some of the world’s finest players will hang out in the 900 seat Pacific Blue Note, home to the majority of the performances for the Festival from 5 – 8 March.
Organisers are raising the floor to the existing balcony level and seating will be cabaret style, allowing the audience to get close and personal in a programme featuring over 75 international artists from 11 countries playing the best of blues, gospel, soul, latin, contemporary to traditional jazz and more, from late morning till after midnight.
The fit-out includes bars, food and coffee outlets, where the audience can soak up the atmosphere between shows. One of the highlights of the Pacific Blue Note will be After Midnight. From Thursday to Saturday the pick of local players will gather to jam with surprise international guests. Hosted by trombonist Joe Lindsay – aka Hopepa from Fat Freddys Drop, entry is FREE with a ticket from another Jazz Festival event that day, or only $25 at the door.
This is the first time New Zealand has had the opportunity to experience a jazz based programme with the depth, range and versatility of international artists of this calibre in a four day musical feast.
The Pacific Blue Note is the hub of the festival centered in venues around Wellington’s Civic Square including a free stage in the Square with acts from Friday till Sunday.
