Sugarlicks Recordings Aotearoa has announced the signing of popular Auckland band ‘one million dollars’. Sugarlicks and ‘one million dollars’ will immediately begin recording the Energy State LP that is due for release in September 2002.
Gareth Farry, the Managing Director of Sugarlicks Recordings says the new signing is a continuation of his company’s aim to encourage innovative New Zealand music.
“We are proud to foster the work of local New Zealand artists. Through the “Styles Upon Styles I & II” compilations we have shown that there is a rich vein of talented musicians and producers in New Zealand who are creating a unique form of South Pacific urban soul.
Our collaboration with ‘One Million Dollars’ started with the “Styles Upon Styles II” compilation that included their track Cashmeruffle. We will now continue this relationship through the production of what I am sure will prove a popular collection of upbeat funk, smoky jazz and brooding soul.”
‘One Million Dollars’ manager, Stephen O’Hoy, says, “The band are thrilled to be associated with the Sugarlicks label.”
“Everyone is looking forward to getting into the studio. The band have worked hard to create a unique brand of New Zealand music and are excited that the sound is proving to be so popular.”
The band recently supported touring US hip hop group the Black Eyed Peas at the St James Theatre, headlined the funk and disco night Popcorn at The Galatos Theatre and travelled to Wellington to play at Radio Active’s Jazz Under the Kowhai Tree event as part of New Zealand Music Month.
Operating as a collective of Auckland musicians 'One Million Dollars’ often take to the stage with an impressive, nine member line-up. The band plays only original songs and has a reputation for exciting, carnival-like live performances. Named by the New Zealand Herald (15.12.2001) as one of the top ten bands to catch over the summer and in Metro magazine’s May 2002 ‘Hot’ list, ‘one million dollars’ have cemented their position on the Auckland live music circuit.
