January News
20 New Zealand bands have been invited so far to play the 23rd South by Southwest Music Festival March 18-22 in Austin Texas: the New Zealanders who have accepted so far include IMNZers White Swan Black Swan, the Tutts, The Brunettes, Connan Mockasin and Jackie Bristow, along with Bionic Pixie, Ross Royce, ElemenoP, Midnight Youth and Kylie Harris. 10,019 artists from around the world applied to showcase this year in 1800 slots in 70 venues over five nights; 2500 were from outside the US.
Savage's second solo album ‘Savage Island’, his first for fans in the US, was released on December 23 and debuted at #26 Billboard Rap Charts and has since climbed to #25; it also debuted at #12 on the Heatseekers Chart. The album features Boo Yaa Tribe, Akon, Pitbull, Soulja Boy Tell'em, Sean P (Youngbloodz) and Rock City and is scheduled for release on February 23 in New Zealand; the video for Wild Out (Chooo Hooo) featuring Angel Dust and Baby Bash is airing now. And Savage fans can catch him in a free performance along with Devolo, Sweet & Irie, Mareko, Cydel, J.Williams, Trigger Theory, Black Salt, DJ Shady 1 and The Mai FM DJs at Manukau’s MIT Open Day this Saturday 31st January from 10:00am -1:00pm. And those other high-fliers, Flight of the Conchords, are nominated in the Comedy section of this year’s Grammy awards for their self-titled album.
Wellington's Over the Atlantic are back in NZ after a 4-month headline tour of USA, England, Scotland, Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands, and have released their second album 'Dimensions'. In 2006 the band was signed to the prestigious USA Carpark/PawTracks family of labels before they'd even played a single show, demonstrating the strength of their first album, ‘Junica’. This made them label buddies with Beach House, Dan Deacon, Animal Collective and Ariel Pink among others, and they played well-received shows around the US and Canada with Beach House to celebrate the release. Over the Atlantic’s songs are written by Nik Brinkman (whose side project Psychic Powers has been signed to USA label Geographic North with the promise of a glow-in-the-dark 12" record to be released soon) and lovingly produced by Bevan Smith (signer, Aspen, Skallander).
Otara’s own Young Sid (Sidney Diamond) is fresh from a business trip to NYC to record his new solo album, and he is now New Zealand’s latest rap export after undertaking an excursion to Korea for a number of promotional shows. Over the last few months, Young Sid has been aligning himself with the Korean community within New Zealand in an effort to further international hip hop relations between our two nations; he’s joined forces with Korean-owned and operated Daemang Productions (DMP) not only in recent events such as ‘Miracle’, but also in the studio where he has recorded tracks exclusively for the Korean market. Last week he performed in South Korea’s two largest cities, Seoul and Busan.
Flip Grater returned to NZ from a successful 2 month European tour just in time for Christmas; she has played in 7 countries over the past 8 weeks and collected hundreds of recipes for her next book: ‘The Cookbook Tour Europe, due out later this year. While touring, she was named MMF Regional Manager Of The Year 2008 (South Island). Legendary international jazz musicians and a great homegrown selection have been added to the final programme of the new biennial Wellington Jazz Festival 2009 which runs from March 5 – 8. From the IMNZ family Fat Freddy’s Drop, Michael Houston and Whirimako Black join a stellar lineup including Roy Ayers, Otis Taylor, the Mingus Big Band and Ed Motta.
The UK Drum & Bass Awards have been announced, and there is a very decent spread of New Zealand nominees. Nominated for Best Producer are State of Mind, Concord Dawn and Bulletproof, with Concord Dawn also nominated for Best Tech DJ and Best International Act. The awards will be announced on February 28in Birmingham; you can vote on the Drumandbassawards.co.uk website. Te Vaka are performing at the Sydney Opera House on the 13th of April this year on a double bill with Tinariwen, who have been described as “the kings and queens of Saharan desert blues”. A reviewer from the UK’s Guardian described Te Vaka as "One of the most dynamic live experiences I have ever witnessed"; the band will be announcing European tour dates soon. Princess Superstar pays homage to Coco Solid in King Kong Records’ release of Monday Morning using the hook from Denim & Leather.
DJ J Brown, DJ Scottie B and MC Speak Easy - aka Kolab - have commenced their foray into Australia, playing a packed Bondi show on January 9 and with shows in Melbourne and Brisbane yet to come; the Melbourne show is with fellow Kiwi the Nomad on January 31 and the Brisbane show is a support for US rapper Lyrics Born on February 5. Tainted join the lineup in support of US metal/hardcore group Misery Signals on their February tour. Tainted and Chuganaut are also in the running for the Iron Maiden support slot; head to the Rock FM’s website to vote for your favourite Maiden support band; you have until 5pm Friday 30th January.
Steve Abel, currently residing in Geneva, is returning home briefly to team up with his ‘Kiwi supergroup’ The Chrysalids (featuring Geoff Maddock (Goldenhorse) and Pluto's Milan Borich and Mike Hall) for a national tour in February and March. They’ll kick the tour off at the beautiful Bethells Beach Cottages where they are joined by Cassette.
2008 was a very busy year for many of the IMNZ whanau. Nesian Mystik made a triumphant return to the charts in May, when Nesian 101 became their biggest song ever, reaching the number one spot in the singles chart, spending 4 consecutive months in the NZ Top Ten, with platinum sales and the video receiving over 400 thousand views on YouTube. This was followed by the top ten hit Dance Floor and in October the release in New Zealand and Japan of their third and highly praised album 'Elevator Musiq'. Mr Mista has just this month become the third consecutive top ten single from the album. Over the span of Nesian Mystik's career the group have notched up a total of nine top ten singles from the albums ‘Polysaturated’, ‘Freshmen’ and ‘Elevator Musiq’.
Departure Lounge are in the studio laying down what will be Central Records’ 7th album, following on from last year’s 'Moving On' by label director Oakley 'OG' Grenell. And in a blast from the past, Oakley, Redford Grenell and Sasha Marks will reform for a 1-off Bunyip reunion set at I-Nation Festival 09, to be held at the Grenell’s farm Whitecliffs in West Canterbury. 10 Years have past since Bunyip's last show; this reggae/ska/dub trio performed with Ben Harper, Che Fu and toured with Salmonella Dub in the late 90's and since their split band members have gone onto release music and tour the world in their respective groups (Shapeshifter, OG, Departure Lounge, Otautahi Allstars). On March 21 and 22 I-Nation will also feature performances from Tiki Live, Little Bushman, Ladi 6, P.Diggsss, Sambora (Shapeshifter), Oakley 'OG' Grenell, Sunshine Soundsystem and Dubwize
Loop have had a super-busy year and amongst projects such as ‘SurfAid: The Music’, the Yes King/Huffer team up and the NZ Post Poetry competition they’ve also released music by Upper Hutt Posse, Tyna, Rhian Sheehan, Future World Resort, Tommy Ill & Buck Beauchamp, Reb Fountain, Skallander, Samuel F. Scott and the B.O.P. and Recloose. ‘New Zealand Landscapes: Northland To Antarctica’ is a photographic collection by Grant Sheehan which celebrates our gorgeous landscapes, and it is accompanied by a apt soundtrack composed by Rhian Sheehan. Sheehan has also just released his first full-length album in four years. ‘Standing in Silence’, a 14-part voyage of soundscapes from as far afield as India, Japan and Spain, is also Loop Recordings’ 50th release. Musicians on the album include Jakob’s Jeff Boyle, Jeremiah Ross aka Module, Raashi Mailk and Thomas Voyce from Rhombus, Andy Hummel, Jess Chambers, members of the NZSO and percussionist Tom Pierard (Strike). A percentage of the profits from the exhibition and album sales will go to ‘The Standing in Silence Fund’ that will be utilised to assist in spreading Greenpeace’s messaging on climate change and increasing the Greenpeace membership via donating 1 year membership’s worth $180 each to members of the Loop database.
Cobra Khan ended the year with support slots for the Bronx (USA) and a Red Bull Live to Air across the bNets, and the New Year will see them touring nationally; they kicked off the year with an appearance at the Big Day Out. Antagonist A.D returned home from another successful Australian tour where they were hailed as 'ones to watch for 2009' by Blunt Magazine; they feature on the December issue’s cover mount CD. 2009 sees Antagonist A.D back on the road throughout NZ with tours with Comeback Kid (USA) & the Red Shore (Aus).
January 11th marked the passing of Sir Edmund Hillary, which has seen a resurgence of interest in Trillion’s tribute song Humble Mountain Man; just before the New Year it was displayed on the features page of YouTube USA and got about 40,000 new views over 3 days. Also on YouTube, the track Super Size My Aspartame was featured on a number of 'truth news' websites; and following in its tradition is a brand new Trillion song, Cellular Phones - Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age.
Delgirl are thrilled to announce they have won a Tui award for Best Folk Album 2008. The Dunedin-based female trio received the award at the Auckland folk Festival held at Kumeu in the weekend; the award was for their debut album ‘Two, Maybe Three Days’ Ride’ which was released independently in November 2007. They’ve just returned from a tour of the South Island’s West Coast and now they’re gearing up for the Hokonui Moonshiners’ Festival in Gore in February. Reviewers have compared them to The Be Good Tanyas and Tres Chicas, whilst also acknowledging a unique sound which comes from heartland New Zealand via a Louisiana swamp with their songs about love, murder, lonesome livestock and road rage.
Great releases are already in abundance for 2009, with plenty of tasty morsels on the horizon too. When 2007 New Zealand Arts Laureate Warren Maxwell (Little Bushman) proclaims he is 'completely turned on' by a band, they’re probably worth checking out. That band is Wellington six-piece psychedelic psychonauts Spartacus R, who released their album ‘When the Fever Takes Hold’ on January 5 and are now touring New Zealand. They’ve developed an enigmatic profile in their hometown through their productions for the New Zealand Fringe Festival, ‘Spartacus R in Octophonic’ (Fringe 07) and ‘Spartacus R's Delusions’ (Fringe 08) which featured a live audio-visual extravaganza set to original 3D film vignettes which showcased on TVNZ's One News. The album was recorded at Wellington's Surgery with Dr Lee Prebble (Phoenix Foundation, Black Seeds, Trinity Roots).
Ragamuffin Children are also embarking on a national tour. The duo’s second album, the Creative New Zealand-funded 'The Seahorse Emporium', is due for release in early February and it too was recorded by Lee Prebble at the Surgery. For their release shows in Christchurch, South Island, and Wellington, Ragamuffin Children will have a full band to accompany them. For the rest of their shows, they will be touring with Benjamin James (Spartacus R) on clarinet, accordion and synth, along with Karena-Tui on backing vocals. Liam Ryan, who has moved the Torch Records studio operation to Nelson to mix down a new album, ‘Pacific Riviera’, is collaborating with a new band, featuring Australian-based Kiwi guitarist Aaron Saxon, to present tracks from the new album at Seifried’s Winery, Nelson on January 31st.
Just in from Move the Crowd, Smashproof have released their debut single Brother; the song features Gin Wigmore, and the video is directed by Chris Graham. Paul McLaney, a previous nominee for Best Male Vocalist at the New Zealand Music Awards, has released his first two critically acclaimed albums in a special edition double pack. When Gramsci came to a halt in 2003, McLaney was pondering his next move when friends Breaks Co-Op encouraged him to hit the studio solo, resulting in ‘Edin’. Then came ‘Diamond Side’, McLaney's second album on LOOP, recorded in LA with legendary producer/engineer Michael Frondelli (Crowded House, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones).
Kabanaz are launching their second album on February 21 with a release show at Bar Bodega in Wellington; joining them on the night will be Supermodel and Faster She Said. The album will largely be available digitally, with CDs able to be found at gigs as well as at the Eclipse Music premises. Recliner have a classy new video for Lonely Girl; the track is from their forthcoming album due out in April. Hamilton’s Sora Shima have opened for some of New Zealand’s finest alternative acts such as Jakob, Dimmer and The Mint Chicks as well as global alt rock icons Broken Social Scene. In addition the band has received notable airplay on the BBC, National Radio NZ, the bNets, countless podcasts across the world, and had a track included in an independent film ‘Jinx Sister’ alongside the likes of Sigur Ros. Their EP ‘Destroy Electronica’ is here, comprising four very different tracks spanning over 30 minutes, mixing beats with guitars and much more; one track could be said to recall DJ Shadow or Massive Attack.
The Warratahs have a pedigree spanning nigh on 25 years; there have been two ‘Best Of’ collections released and this one - the latest of the two - was initially released in 2003 and is back after being unavailable for about a year and a half. And already being hailed by New Zealand’s folk scene as “the next big thing,” Forbidden Joe’s dynamic arrangements and funky grooves, spiced with influences of Jazz, Celtic, European, and Soul make for a quirky show of songs and tunes. The cheeky and effervescent Frances Dickinson heads the line up; alongside Frances are Emily Giles (cello) and Alex Borwick (banjo/trombone) who complete this-one-of-kind musical menagerie.
‘Conscious Roots 5’ is a sprawling 75 minute epic that builds on the founding philosophy of this compilation series: that we should give voice to the spirit within and develop our own roots genre rather than following overseas musical trends. The sleeve art reflects this and is a painting of Rua Kenana, the prophet and visionary spiritual leader of the Tuhoe nation. The album includes a mix of tracks by the likes of much-loved artists Tiki, Katchafire, Cornerstone Roots, House Of Shem and Tahuna Breaks as well as unreleased offerings from The Native Sons, Tenement Yard and Ska Child; with the bonus of a rare offering from Rio Hunuki-Hemopo (ex-Trinity Roots) from a 12" vinyl release.
Clap Clap Riot were the recent winners of the MTV 2008 Kickstart competition who have completed extensive production work with Jimmy Christmas (The D4) and have played shows along side The Datsuns, Cut Off Your Hands and The Checks as well as performing at the Big Day Out, Rhythm And Vines and Southern Amp festivals. The 5-tracker ‘TV Knows Better’ is their debut EP; the band will be touring the length of the country for their release celebrations and will be making stopovers in both Australia and Japan before the year’s end. Listen out for their debut single Don’t Want Your Baby.
Summer tours and festivals are still in full effect, they’re proving to be a welcome interruption to the start of the working year. Parachute ’09 was on last weekend; a crowd of more than 25,000 punters arrived at the 19th year of the gathering and festival-goers experienced 150 bands across 6 stages during the 3-day weekend. Parachute also provided a bit of a sales spike for the local and international acts that played there - all five new entries on this week’s NZ Top 40 Album Chart are by acts from the festival, including three New Zealand acts: The Parachute Band, Rapture Ruckus and MumsDollar. Parachute Music hosted its first Australian events too, with shows in Brisbane and Sydney both on January 22, featuring Casting Crowns and the Parachute Band in Sydney, and David Crowder Band, Kutless and Magnify in Brisbane.
Sounday returned to Christchurch’s North Hagley Park for an afternoon in the sun on Saturday 24th with Fat Freddy's Drop, DJ Vadim & Yarah Bravo, The Nathan Haines Band, Cut Off Your Hands, The Klap, Insomniac, Truth and A Hori Buzz, all hosted by Spanky. The Main Divide is happening on Saturday 21st February and Shapeshifter will be gracing the lineup for their one and only show in Canterbury this summer, which will see them playing a brand new set with material from their forthcoming album. Adding to a soul-satisfying day of New Zealand music are Ladi6, Pacific Heights, Lisa Tomlins with JDubs and Aeries, The Oakley 'OG' Grenell Band featuring Sacha Vee, KPz and Switch, Electric Wire Hustle, L.A Mitchell and the Nativa Band and Solaa.
Happening this Waitangi weekend on Saturday 7th February at Rotorua International Stadium is the second installment of the Raggamuffin Festival featuring reggae legends Ziggy Marley, Eddy Grant, Ali Campbell Shaggy, Arrested Development, Inner Circle, Kora, Unity Pacific and Three Houses Down. And in Wellington Radio Active 89FM presents One Love 2009 on Friday 6 February at the Hataitai Velodrome for an expected crowd of 15,000. Performing will be The Black Seeds, Unity Pacific, The Little Bushman and Electric Wire Hustle alongside the Roots and Culture DJs, Topknot, Ras Twig, Misteek and Carlito from Radio Active. A.R.E.A 9 Music Festival is also on over Waitangi weekend (6-8 Feb) in South Canterbury, featuring top NZ musicians including The Black Seeds, Ladi6, dDub and many more as well as some particularly Kiwi extreme sports. Proceeds will help contribute to the preservation of one of New Zealand's rarest birds, the Black Stilt.
Waitangi Day 09 also sees the homecoming of Tiki (Ngati Maniapoto) and his band Tiki Live from the Big Day Out circuit in Australia, the only NZ act to do it this year. He’ll play 2 very different Auckland shows in one day - firstly joining Hollie Smith and P Money with MC's Vince Harder, David Dallas and PNC at the 12th Toi O Manukau Waitangi Day free family celebrations. One highlight will be the appearance of Tiki's father, popular Christchurch tourism ambassador, Uekaha Taanetinorau. Tiki's second show, Waitangi Fire, is an MC/DJ mash up where Tiki will toast alongside other top NZ MC’s and DJs at 4:20 on K Rd.
The Naked and Famous have been handpicked by legendary industrial act Nine Inch Nails to open their highly anticipated New Zealand show on February 17. To celebrate their first NZ gig of 2009 Pitch Black are playing a gig at Auckland’s Galatos on the 5th of February with support from Bluetech and friends; entry to the gig is by koha, so give whatever you feel like giving or can afford. The first Cuba St Carnival in February 1999 celebrated the distinctive culture of Wellington’s most-loved street with an audience of 15,000; its growth over 10 years now sees the event attract national and international interest and audiences of 150,000! Amongst those from the IMNZ crew in Cuba St on February 21 this year will be The Tutts, The Ruby Suns, The Woolshed Sessions, The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra and DJ Stinky Jim.
The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band and DJ Balkanetic are on the road again in January on the second national Gypsy Fever tour, taking their infectious blend of East European/Gypsy/Klezmer music to venues all around the country. The BBB Band released their debut EP ‘Danse Macabre’ in early 2008 and since then they have been in hot demand playing at the Prana, Jambalaya, Parihaka and Splore festivals last summer as well as undertaking a highly successful 20 date ‘Gypsy Fever’ national tour in January/early February, and in March they had the honour of supporting popular international act Beirut at the Kings Arms in Auckland. Catch the band while you can as plans are afoot to relocate to their musical motherland in May next year for a European tour.
Former Handsome Geoffrey and Duchess frontwoman Anna Coddington is again hitting the roads of our fair country with her guitarist, Ned Ngatae, travelling light with only a couple of guitars and a lilo in the boot. She's stopping for swims and ice blocks in some of our beautiful beach towns and singing songs from her album ‘The Lake’ plus a few other favoured tunes. This is in her mind the perfect summer. Roots Music Aotearoa presents Darcy Perry and Craig Bracken on a blues and roots, guitar and harmonica tour of Coromandel summer spots.
Pig Out's Marie Celeste is joining forces with bFM's No Sleep ‘til Bedtime host Meltron to host a Factory club night at K'’ Road’s secluded back room club, Pull Bar, this Friday January 30. Expect to hear the creme of New York Disco, Parisian Electro and German Techno. And Wildside Records’ very own Murray Cammick can be heard DJing every Wednesday at C.A.C. Bar in Auckland’s Mt Eden; if you like a bit of soul, funk and jazz vocal this could be just the ticket.
