Tāmaki Makaurau's Who Shot Scott shares new single and video 'Demons'

03 February 2023 - 0 Comments

Who Shot Scott is the musical project of Zaidoon Nasir (he/him), a producer and experimental hip hop artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). Who Shot Scott's production packs a punch, with heavy 808s intertwined with bass that make promises to make subs groove. Lyrically he finely balances bravado and braggadocio with vulnerability and introspection, resulting in a brave creative philosophy that is present throughout his entire catalogue.

Today Who Shot Scott shares the new single Demons, along with a music video directed by long term collaborator Connor Pritchard.

Serving as his first single of 2023, Demons explodes with style and energy thanks to Who Shot Scott's unique production - pairing monstrous trap 808’s with maxed-out-distorting electric guitar riffs, over the top of which he screams his vocals out in a performance more fitting of a 2000’s era punk than a contemporary hip-hop song. Speaking on his tale of growth through self discovery, the artist states:

“The song is about the constant battles I face with my ego, and the demons that arise inside of me as a result. I feel that we as a human race live in a very superficial time, and in the past this has caused me to be such a seeker of approval to the point where I’ve often found myself acting against my own morals in order to get a quick ego-fix. I’ve done a lot of growing up and reflection in the past couple of years which has led me to very intentionally pull away from these habits as I realised they were not serving me, and more importantly, they were not serving my artistic expression. With my new found self-awareness I was able to ultimately come to the conclusion that true self-worth can never be achieved through wanting to be gassed up by peers, but only through a pure inner confidence that needs no exterior approval or validation. This song is my coming to terms with this realisation, and apologising to myself for having ever put my shallow ‘wants’, over my spiritual needs.”.

With his highly anticipated third EP Mercy III set to release in a couple of weeks, and an incredible visual counterpart created by legendary kiwi director Connor Pritchard (who has worked with SWIDT and Savage, Six60Melodownz + many more) which sees the artist go off in a completely rained-out setting, Who Shot Scott is making one thing clear - he is starting his year off with a bang, literally.

A boy fled Iraq in the arms of his mother when he was just two years old. Due to the dangers in his home country, they were forced to journey to Moscow, Russia. After some time in the Russian capital, they again packed their few belongings and traveled to New Zealand. Once there, Zaidoon Nasir found comfort in a friend at age 8 and they were joined at the hip. Their shared love for hip-hop resulted in an internationally performing duo with big plans for the future. In 2019 however, his partner, citing new-found religious belief, abruptly announced he will no longer make music, moved overseas and left his closest friend with no goodbye. After some grueling months, experimental hip-hop artist Who Shot Scott was born from the ashes of that personal and professional apocalypse.

Who Shot Scott has since released two EPs Mercy and Mercy II to great acclaim. International music media celebrate his “filthy and frantic experimental sound” and “fearless expression”. Rolling Stone Magazine Australia has named him as one of the Top 8 New Zealand artists’ tipped to take over.

The single Loners Anthem reigned at #1 on the NZ Student Radio Network charts for four weeks and won the Top 10 award as the most voted-for song of the year at the national award ceremony in November 2022. His music has been playlisted by MTV and Spotify editorials, synced by TV networks, TV commercials, and featured by some of the most popular YouTube creators. Songs on his first two EP’s have been played/added to rotation on non-commercial and college radio across Europe, Australia and NZ.

Who Shot Scott has brought his explosive and engaging live performances to some of NZ’s biggest stages with an appearance at the prestigious Rhythm & Vines festival and more to come in early 2023. He will be embarking on his first international tour in April 2023 which will include dates in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia.

Over the course of his previous two EP’s, Who Shot Scott has organically built a loyal international fanbase, with the majority of his listeners currently based in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. The upcoming release of Who Shot Scott’s third EP Mercy III is excitingly anticipated by fans, media and industry professionals alike.
