Surf Friends Release New Song 'Dreaming' + Announce Album Release Shows

15 February 2023 - 0 Comments

Hot off the heels of their latest single Something Real, Surf Friends release the second single, Dreaming, from their upcoming album Sonic Waves. Taking a step further into their kaleidoscopic sound whilst keeping in line with their blissful rock sensibilities, Brad Coley and Pete Westmoreland dish out even more ethereal melodies and guitar loops on Dreaming, enveloping listeners in its heavenly wash of sonics.

“This song is about how nature provides us with the environment we need to slow us down, allowing us to see more clearly the direction we want to take.” Surf Friends say of the track. “It is about that very moment we become aware and feel our potential, see the direction and take the helm.”

Along with the single, Surf Friends have announced two album release shows in March to celebrate the release of their upcoming album, Sonic Waves. Taking place in their hometown, Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland as well as surf capital Whāingaroa / Raglan, Surf Friends will be joining forces with Power Nap (in Raglan) and King Of The Sadboys (in Auckland) to put on an epic night of music, and showcase their new tunes live and in the flesh. Surf Friends will also be performing at Field Of Dreams Festival on Saturday the 18th of February, alongside Te Huhu, Arthur Ahbez, Wellness and more. More information here.

Sonic Waves is Surf Friends’ forthcoming album and their first full length release since their hypnotic 2019 offering, Doing Your Thing. Its sun-drenched first single, Something Real garnered instant success, flying to the top half of the 95bFM Top 10 three weeks in a row since its release, peaking at #1.

Surf Friends say of Sonic Waves that “the focus of the record was to keep it raw and more distorted than previous releases." The album sees the duo of Brad Coley and Peter Westmoreland joining forces with long-time producer, Mark Howden, to take on new musical directions, whilst retaining their dreamy psych-surf energy that put them on the musical map all the way back in 2009, when they debuted their self-titled EP.

Sonic Waves will be available digitally, as well as on CD on March 17, 2023 via Flying Nun Records.

For a duo, Surf Friends sure know how to make an impressive amount of noise. The Auckland / Tāmaki-Makaurau-based two-piece, made up of Brad Coley (guitar, vocals, keys, harmonica, drum machine) and Peter Westmoreland (bass, keys, vocals), formed in 2009. Drawing inspirations from the jangle-pop of early Flying Nun bands such as The Clean, Surf Friends defined their distinct psych-surf and post-punk sound, using driving guitars, drum machines and synths loops to create a visceral, solar-powered wash of sound. Their 2010 debut album, Confusion, gained worldwide attention, Pitchfork praising their “off-the-cuff brilliance”. Over their almost fourteen-year career, they have performed and collaborated with the likes of Hamish and David Kilgour (The Clean), Nick Roughan (The Skeptics), The Black Watch and Snapper and have performed at festivals such as The Others Way, Psych Fest and Field Of Dreams.
