April News
Congratulations to Smashproof, whose single Brother (featuring Gin Wigmore) has spent 8 consecutive weeks at # 1 (and 11 weeks overall in the New Zealand singles chart), and has just gone Platinum. If you’d like to catch them play their hit signle live - plus other tracks from their album ‘The Weekend’, which debuted at number 3 on the national album chart - they’re touring in May, covering a generous spread of the North and South Islands. Smashproof’s Young Sid and Deach were also part of a concert presented by Mai FM held on March 19 to raise funds for the Evile family who lost 4 children in a house fire in January. And well done to Nesian Mystik who picked up the very first Best Kiwi award at the MTV Australia awards held on March 27; the awards were voted on by MTV viewers in Australia and New Zealand - the boys would like to say a big thanks to all the supporters that voted for them.
In other ‘good on you mate’ news, he may be playing 2 shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York this week, but first Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement wanted to play a school fundraiser in his hometown of Masterton, raising around $70,000 for his old school Makoura College on March 31. The duo are currently on an extensive tour of the US and Canada. Shapeshifter will be celebrating New Zealand Music Month in the Northern Hemisphere with a mighty tour of Europe and the UK during May. They’ll be playing Amsterdam, Den Haag, Paris, Edinburgh, Birmingham, London, Manchester, Brighton, Dublin and Cork, plus the Dot to Dot Fest in Bristol and Nottingham. Concord Dawn continue their globetrotting ways with shows in Ukraine, Russia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Austria over April and May and a US tour on the horizon for July.
Six NZ songwriters have been selected in the finals of the International Songwriting Competition from over 15,000 entries worldwide. Judges include Tom Waits, Ray Davies, Loretta Lynn, Steve Lillywhite and New Zealand’s own Neil Finn. Finalists from the IMNZ whanau are: Darren Watson (Blues), Steve Abel (Video) and Opetaia Foa'i [Te Vaka] (World Music); winners will be announced later this month. And Te Vaka performed at the Byron Bay Bluesfest over Easter - Bluesfest is the largest festival of Blues and Roots music in the Southern Hemisphere; they then headed to Sydney for a performance on April 13 at the Sydney Opera House in a double billing with desert blues band Tinariwen.
Disasteradio will play two last NZ shows in April before he leaves with Blink to tour around the US, UK, Europe and Australia for the bulk of this year (April-August); keep an eye on the A Low Hum website for blogs about their travels. The Enright House has up and relocated to the US; he kicked off his first US tour with a couple of shows at SXSW. White Swan Black Swan are also back after what sounds like some very enjoyable shows – for them and the audiences – in Austin, Nashville and San Fransisco. After blowing the ceiling out of Sandwiches at the Massey Uni Orientation finale, Minuit had to answer demand and put on another Wellington show at the San Francisco Bath House at the start of this month. They have also lined up two more shows in Christchurch and Dunedin: 1) to test new material from their upcoming third album, 2) to carve out their set for a tour of Vietnam! They have concerts lined up on April 25 at the Hanoi International Music Festival and on April 26 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Leila Adu briefly returned to New Zealand after receiving an adulatory reception in Europe and the United States, having been described as a “Nina Simone for the noughties”. Adu has previously appeared with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and produced two acclaimed albums (‘Dig A Hole’ 2003 and ‘Cherry Pie’ 2006), which led to national tours in Australia, Indonesia, Russia, America and the UK. Recently Leila recorded a new album with the legendary Steve Albini (PJ Harvey, Nirvana) due for release late 2009, and she presented two concerts at the Auckland Arts Festival, one solo (March 9) and one with her band Together Alone.
‘Kora! Kora! Kora!’ Is a cut-up and clubbed-to-pieces collage of key cuts from Kora’s platinum-selling debut album, forged in Sheffield, England by the legendary electronic pioneers Cabaret Voltaire. This is the first new work from The Cabs in more than 15 years - Richard H Kirk, Cabaret Voltaire’s originator, saw Kora live, was gob-smacked by the sheer intensity of the show and immediately offered to apply the Cabaret Voltaire effect. They once commented that they desired to ‘annoy as many people as possible’ - we’ll see about that!
Fresh from the practise room thrashing together new songs for their follow up record to ‘Promises Promises’ (due to be recorded late 2009), Die! Die! Die! head back to the UK on April 20 for a 15-date tour, which includes playing the Camden Crawl Festival along with the likes of Art Brut, Echo and the Bunnymen, Wire and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; plus the Great Escape in Brighton. Whilst there they’ll be releasing their new single White Horses. Before they go, on Friday April 17th (that’s today!) DDD fans young and old will be treated to two shows on the same night – first at the Cross Street Studios, an all ages show with Moron Says What?! and Nevernudes (doors are at 4pm), and next at Bacco Room on Nelson St; this is an R18 show with Sets, Piece War and Pinsineedles.
Antagonist A.D have returned from a month in South East Asia which saw them play shows in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Phillipines, Japan and Australia; they have also announced a national New Zealand tour throughout May and June - following up their release of their sophomore album 'We are the Dead', 2009 has seen the band touring continuously. After this tour Antagonist A.D. will be heading back to Australia in June to support hardcore giants Earth Crisis (USA). Cobra Khan are also hitting the road during May; keep an eye out on music television for their new video Liquid Separation.
On May 1 at Auckland’s Cassette, Charlie ASH play their last New Zealand show before they head to Europe for summer; this trip includes a sold out show in support of Ladyhawke in London plus a concert with The Bats in the Netherlands. You can also catch them at Summerset in Wellington and Salut in Whangarei before they embark on their very exciting adventure. Little Bushman are currently starting out on their inaugural trip to Australia, with shows booked this month in Byron Bay, Brisbane, Melbourne, Fremantle and Sydney. Deceptikonz (Savage. Mareko and Alphrisk) are heading to Australia to play at Melbourne’s Queensbridge Hotel on ANZAC Day evening (April 25).
Gigging overseas more often than at home, Pitch Black have been going hard out in many parts of the world - especially the virtual ones. Their tours to Japan and the US late last year were their biggest yet and will be followed by almost three months of solid touring in those countries plus the UK and Europe this year from June through to August. Their new remix album ‘Rhythm, Sound and Movement’ is released digitally worldwide on April 28th and on CD on May 4th. It features remixes from Kiwi electron-herders International Observer, Simon Flower and Kerretta, American dub-tronica artists Bluetech and Patch, Melbourne-based Deep Fried Dub, plus a range of international remixers. Mike and Paddy's semi-emigration to cyberspace has kept the boys busy in other ways: they are working on remixes for International Observer, Friends Electric (UK), and The Laya Project - an album of music from countries affected by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that was released last year as a fundraising effort. Paddy is considered a world authority on live-performance music software Ableton Live, and he was flown to Ableton Headquarters in Berlin to give input in developing the software. Pitch Black also frequently give workshops around the world about live electronic performance; the last ones in London and Amsterdam were standing-room only affairs with over 200 punters attending.
Round Trip Mars has unleashed the new Round Trip Mars Simplex (roundtripmars.com), so do drop by. And with most of the RTM camp on writing, demo–ing and what–have–you–ing lockdown it’s old duffers and nouveau kids on the block Unitone HiFi who have actually been eking something out: their remix of Overproof Soundsystem’s King Step has just been unleashed digitally for purchase; wax will be available soon. Check the RTM blog for the unreleased dub version which is only up for a limited time. And a bunch of Orientation gigs up and down the country have returned The Naked And Famous to their normal orbit, after what was a stingingly successful support for NiN, that had the Reznor posting a pic of the band on his ninblog.
The Rainbow News magazine has been on the market for some 20 years in New Zealand and Australia, and its April/May issue features an article on Yulia's role as executive producer for the collaborative project Alms Electronica's "music with a conscience". The magazine also features Alms Electronica giveaways.
We’re well and truly gearing up for NZ Music Month now, and if the new releases that we’re seeing now are anything to go by, 2009 is bringing a bumper crop of local goodness. The long lost Polynesian cousin of Sgt Pepper, Sir Plus, and his band The Requirements, base their sound on a mixture of ‘50s pop & ‘70s soul, offering a musical hangi – with extra spice thrown in! A concept album by Tama Waipara, it’s produced by Justyn Pilbrow (Elemeno P, Deja Voodoo) and features renowned local musos Graham Cope, Godfrey De Grut, Dan Sperber, Dixon Nacey and Chip Matthews in the “house” band. The album was launched with a show of the same name premiering at the Auckland Festival. Tama’s vocal career began when a head injury interrupted his clarinet studies at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York, and in 2004 Waipara released his debut album, ‘Triumph Of Time’, debuting at New York’s famous Central Park Summerstage to rave reviews. This was followed by a highly successful European tour in the same year and further tours across the US, Europe & the UK, before he returned to NZ to release the ‘Leaving Paradise’ EP, featuring Nathan Haines.
The Cassette core is Tom Watson (Head Like A Hole) an Craig Terris (Hell Is Other People), and ‘The Jingle King’ is their 2nd full-length album, following the ‘Cancer’ EP, ‘Cut For Summer’ album and ‘Emo’ EP. So the story goes… on a recent tour of NZ, Cassette stopped at a quaint little 2nd hand shop and were drawn inside to a colossal figure at the back of the shop with an axe in hand and a handsome woman at his feet – they had just met The Jingle King! ·Alongside the inclusion of The Jingle King himself to their line-up, Cassette have been joined by Luke Buda, David Fraser and Andrew Bain (Fur Patrol) on the album, with Lee Prebble at the mixing console. The Eastern are Adam McGrath and Jess Shanks, with friends and family, and ‘The Eastern’ is their debut album. They’ve played from Nashville to Timaru and a few stops in between - Christchurch is home but Lyttelton’s where the heart is; and they’ve played more than 230 shows in the past year alone, including opening for Steve Earle, Jimmy Barnes, Jim White and John Doe, Barry Saunders and more. Their two previously released EPs, ‘Crow River’ and ‘Get It Right’ lead nicely into this.
Since their inception in 1989, Nairobi Trio have become one of New Zealand's favourite jazz bands, appearing at major festivals in New Zealand, the UK, Europe, Australia and Asia. Over 20 years together they’ve released eight albums; Ode are now releasing their 3 most recent including two studio albums - ‘Safari’ and ‘Standards’ - and 2005’s best of ’Collection’. Ode also have the Pagan Gold collection, a wee gem released on one of New Zealand’s pioneering independents in 2001 and featuring many of their hitmakers including Shona Laing, Tex Pistol, Rikki Morris, Parker Project, Holidaymakers, Southside of Bombay, Warratahs, Paul Ubana Jones, Ted Brown, Billy T James and many more.
‘Loops Of Love’ is Jody O Lloyd’s first truly solo album, thus his usual Trillion moniker is being set aside in favour of his birth name. The album was inspired by a collection of images produced by Melbourne photographic artist Devika Bilimoria; the 12 tracks correspond to Bilimora’s 12 delicate images. The CD launch is a two week exhibition in Christchurch at the Silvan Gallery opening on May 1; on show and available for purchase at the exhibition will be the handmade album package that includes a collection of the twelve reprinted Polaroid images. An Emerald City have emerged from recording in a cave in Whatipu with their critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Circa Scaria’; the release includes a limited run of 200 double vinyls including a 12-page booklet and original artwork by Will Handley. To celebrate, the band are holding a release show at Pt Chevalier’s Ambassador Theatre on April 18th with Paul Williams and special guests; they are also currently on a national tour with The Datsuns. These will be the band's last shows before relocating in Berlin for the coming months.
Hannah Howes’ ten-year apprenticeship in song-writing has set her on a course of broad spectrum collaborations (also under the moniker Sista Mischief), several NZ tours and resulted in two independently released albums. Her third album, 'Candy' features a large cast including Peter Hill (Rhombus, Woolshed Sessions), Myele Manzanza (Recloose, Olmecha Supreme), King Homeboy (National Beatbox Champion, Kamehameha Champion), Rio Hemopo (Trinity Roots, Breaks Co-op) and Dayna Sanerivi amongst many others. Building on the low-lit interior sounds of their critically acclaimed 2006 debut ‘Rest Room’, Selon Recliner’s second album ‘The Orchid Door’ is due for release April 27; producer Dave Holmes (Gramsci, Jacob) helped the band explore a steeper landscape than on their first outing. The band are celebrating with an Album Release Show and Buffet at the New Orient, Saturday May 16; and they’re currently busy out in the wops filming a video for opening track Swan.
Tourettes has just released his third album, ‘Who Said You Can’t Dance to Misery?’, featuring his radio favourite Almost Out of Water (featuring Anna Coddington). In the last 4 years, he’s played 132 shows – including supporting Dizzee Rascal, Atmosphere and Sage Francis, and has toured NZ, Australia, Europe, England and Japan; he’s also won the national NZ emcee battle title and came 2nd in Australasia. Following the success of his spoken word nights in Auckland, Tourettes also has a new CD out featuring solely his spoken word material, and you can catch him with DMN and Kid Shellian at Roasted Addiction in Kingsland on April 26th of April, and at Hard Core Vs Hip Hop at Auckland’s Whammy Bar on May 9 – it features R.E.S, Shitripper, Tourettes and Army of Darkness. He’s also visiting Wellington on May 1 and 2.
Mana Music are about to release the second album from The Bads (Dianne Swann and Brett Adams) entitled ‘So Alive’ on April 27. The Bads are also thrilled to be supporting Lucinda Williams at her Auckland and Wellington shows. Fresh from the studio, Farmer Pimp present Honey Bee, the first single off their forth coming debut LP ‘Sweet Hot Pepper Pop’. Sheba’s new video Erotic Static was choreographed by Adam De Haar, formally of Black Grace, who helped to convey the sensual feel she was aiming for.
The Dead C (Bruce Russell, Michael Morley and Robbie Yeats) formed in Dunedin in 1986, and renowned for their lo-fi guitar soundscapes and improvisational approach to rock, gained international notoriety through their releases on the Philadelphia label Siltbreeze – and have been noted as influential by the likes of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and pretty much everyone in the current fertile underground noise scene. Rhythmethod now offer a selection of The Dead C’s albums and EP releases, on both CD & vinyl LP; some long out of print, some with exclusive bonus material, via the Ba Da Bing and Siltbreeze labels. Rhythmethod have also reissued The Pin Group’s ‘Retrospective’, a compilation also originally released by Siltbreeze. The group were Christchurch-based noise pop trio Roy Montgomery (vocals, guitar), Ross Humphrey (bass) and Peter Stapleton (drums), who only released a handful of material. The CD includes the Ambivalence/Columbia 7” (the first single issued on Flying Nun!), the Coat/Jim 7”, ‘The Pin Group Goes To Town’ EP, a live cover of the classic War track Low Rider and 2 studio tracks recorded during the group’s 1993 “reunion”: all of this material is rare in its original form.
Rhythmethod have also joined Rough Trade in releasing the Veils’ new album, ‘Sun Gangs’, the band’s third album for Rough Trade, produced by Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker, British Sea Power) and ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler (Duffy, Cut Off Your Hands, The Libertines). Finn’s father Barry Andrews was a member of XTC in the late 1970s and Shriekback in the 1980s, also going on to tour with the likes of Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, Iggy Pop & David Bowie. In younger days in Auckland, thousands of miles from his father, Finn sang at a folk club up a volcano, and sidelined a desire to paint when he began hearing musicians like Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan – in ‘Sun Gangs’, The Veils have brought Finn’s early influences full circle.
Three of New Zealand’s top jazz artists, Ron Samsom (drums), Kevin Haines (bass) and Dixon Nacey make up the Samsom Nacey Haines Trio. They performed live in the Festival Club at the Aotea Centre as a part of the Auckland Festival 2009; ‘Open To Suggestions’ is their debut album. While Jacqui Fitzgerald’s voice became familiar in households across the country through her work on the award winning BASF ‘Dear John’ advert (which went on to win world acclaim and is in the Advertising Hall Of Fame), she is a session vocalist and successful recording artist in her own right. 1985’s ‘The Masquerade Is Over’ was a special treat for jazz fans, and Jacqui won the Jazz Album of the Year in 1985, the first time a female had won the award. This is the first time the album has been released on CD; the re-issue is remastered and features the previously unreleased track Body And Soul. The album features some of New Zealand's top jazz musicians: Mike Walker, Andy Brown, Frank Gibson Jnr. Brian Smith and Martin Winch.
‘If You Ever Meet a Dinosaur’ is a collection of 17 children’s’ songs from the pen of Camilla During; the collection includes tracks with a distinctly New Zealand feel like In My Garden. Available alongside the CD is the book of the same name, illustrated by Melissa Martyn and featuring the tracks’ lyrics plus the chords for each song so children and adults alike can play along on guitar or piano. Jeremy Roake, Josef Orlowski and Robert Jamieson make up the experimental rock group Rogue Giraffe. All three members played in various New Zealand bands throughout the 70s’ and 80s’; ‘Patience and Kindness’ is the trio’s debut album Four of the tracks on the CD have a strong spoken word component and a 'theatrical' flavor inspired by the likes of Tom Waits, Jethro Tull, Captain Beefheart, Brian Eno and David Bowie. Since the late 80s Jeremy has also written for theatre and is currently working on a piece of musical theatre, 'The Passion of the Drunken Sailors', for the Christchurch Arts Festival 2011.
Kimo are a Christchurch-based music project centered around the guitar, keyboards and voice of David Mulcahy (JPSE, Superette, and currently Mulchzoid) and the production, guitar, keyboards and bass of Rob Mayes (Throw, Springloader, Dolphin and Failsafe head honcho) with an ever-expanding crew of talent contributing their skills including Namiko Iwamoto (Escalade), Michael Daly (Renderers, Leadleg and YFC), and Mark Roberts (Enright House). ‘Surrender’ is their new album, 2 years in the making and featuring dark pop and deep textures. Rosy Tin Teacaddy are Billy Earl and Betty Grey (aka Andy Hummel and Holly Jane Ewens); based in Wellington, the group has shared the stage with Jose Gonzalez, Iron and Wine, Chris Knox, Jess Chambers, Teacups, Ragamuffin Children, Matt Langley, The Broken Heartbreakers and Tim Guy among others. Ewens brings her poetry and theatre experience to the group. Andy Hummel, a key member of The Woolshed Sessions, writes, rants and sings; and under the moniker Hummel he has remixed the likes of Pitch Black and Rhian Sheehan.
Hailing from Christchurch, the Oval Office are an 8-piece funk band renowned for their high-energy shows mixing funk, soul, jazz, blues and Latin music. Their self-titled debut album features Sacha Vee (Pacific Heights, P-Bass Expressway, Departure Lounge), Richard Pickard (Cairo Knife Fight), Kurt Dyer, Gwyn Reynolds and Scott Taitoko (Solaa), Daniel Kennedy (Dukes), Darren Pickering (Oakley Grenell live band) and Harry Harrison. Inspiration came from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Maceo Parker, Brothers Johnson, Stevie Wonder and Tower of Power. This album was written during one of the regular “band camps” in Mt Somers, Canterbury, and was recorded by David Cooper at the Christchurch Jazz Polytechnic.
There are great shows a-plenty on the horizon too. For the first time, this year the Fly My Pretties cast features musicians from the wider reaches of Aotearoa in addition to their stalwart Wellington crew, including Anna Coddington, L.A. Mitchell and Paul McLaney; new Wellington additions include Riki Gooch, Rio Hunuki-Hemopo and Tom Watson. Another new element to this year’s show will see Fly My Pretties be joined on stage by Barnaby Weir’s legendary storytelling father Dick Weir, who will narrate an original story woven into the music of the new live show. This all-ages adventure, written by Barnaby and Dick, will also be available as a book illustrated by talented newcomer Kieran Rynhart.
The Woolshed Sessions - the band that grew from a jam in a former shearing shed in Takaka - is heading to Auckland and Hawke’s Bay; it will be the first time the crew of Age Pryor, Jess Chambers, Justin 'Firefly' Clarke, Andy Hummel, Peter Hill, Brett Skinner, Al Fraser and Dr Lee Prebble have gathered together beyond the Paekakariki turn off. The band have musical connections to Fly My Pretties, The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, The Black Seeds, Rosy Tin Teacaddy, Tahu, Rio Hemopo and Rhombus. After half a year spent in and out of the studio, Miriam Clancy is stepping back on stage armed with a new NZ On Air funded single and video out in May, to be followed by her second album release later this year. An NZ autumnal tour will also be announced shortly along with other exciting news.
Metal fans be alert - Tainted make a couple of relatively rare journeys north in April and May to play some shows in Auckland, including appearances at HMHR Metalfest and Audience with the Devil – they also venture to Whangarei, and in between their northern shows they’ll be playing with Brazilian band Krisiun in Christchurch on April 24. In September they head to Australia to support US act Chimaira.
Formed in 2001 after a session at the infamous Raglan Musicians Club, Cornerstone Roots quickly developed a strong local following. Since then they’ve released an EP and two albums, the most recent being ‘Free Yourself’, which found its way into the IMNZ Top 20 albums of 2007. You can catch them live this May when they play Napier, Wellington, Nelson and Picton. The Mamaku Project are on a national tour of regional areas in April and May, thanks to Christchurch-based Arts on Tour New Zealand, a community focused trust which organises tours of selected New Zealand performers to rural and smaller centres in New Zealand. The trust receives funding from Creative New Zealand and liaises with local arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups to bring the best of musical and other talent to country districts.

The Pirongia Mountain Men are among the line-up of musicians who are playing in the 20th annual Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival in 2009 which is happening May 8 - 10. The festival highlights music and friendship in a stunning setting, and each year the festival features more than 45 acts from New Zealand, Nashville and Australia performing at multiple venues. Leo and Rob from Silverwoodstudio are recording at the West Coast’s Big Totara River and recording footage for a DVD, inspired by a recent #1 (3rd April) in the US Indie Comedy charts at iacmusic.com where they sat just above Flight of the Conchords’ Business Time. This site has established a pay per play option for prime artists: the artists get a share of the revenue from advertising, based on the numbers of plays they are receiving from embedded MP3 players across the World Wide Web.
To celebrate the release of his new album ‘Marvellous Year’, Don McGlashan and his band the Seven Sisters are hitting the road in a giant campervan, playing 13 shows from Queenstown to Auckland.
