Up and coming Dunedin alternative / progressive rock band Ivy released their debut EP For the Sake of It on 8th February 2023.
The boys have been writing and refining songs since they started jamming together at High School in 2020. Inspired by political, historical and deeply emotional personal events, they have developed a skill for creating songs with innovative and compelling rhythms, melodies, vocal harmonies and lyrical flair.
Ivy gave us an
insight to their talent for song writing with their catchy and upbeat debut
single Stranger, released in September 2022. Their new five track EP shows us
that their musical creative basket is overflowing with talent, energy and most
importantly, incredibly well-crafted songs.
James Axton, lead guitarist said “We have very broad musical backgrounds so the lockdowns gave us an opportunity to throw our musical ideas in together and make songs that we feel really excited about. Our debut EP is a sample of the songs that we are now performing live at venues in Dunedin. We are really happy with the end product and we hope people enjoy listening and watching us perform live. We are really excited about the EP. There’s a lot more on the way!”
About the EP
Catcher in the Rye is set to a funky tempo but with a dark side. It is story about Mark Chapman who shot and killed John Lennon in 1980, and how he said his action was inspired by the novel’s protagonist, Holden Caulfield.
Jelly is a satirical song which makes a commentary on the sugary sweetness of modern commercial pop music.
For the Sake of It is has a Latin flavour with a twist… exploring what it’s like to love someone who loves someone else. Live performances of this song have had audiences rocking!
In Requiem is an experimental step in a completely different direction from the other songs on the EP. It is a gritty, angry song about the impacts and effects after a break up, including lust and loss.
Morning’s Wake is a deeply thoughtful, emotional and epic journey of a rock song. The music and lyrics explore the extreme and conflicting emotions of someone who has decided to end a turbulent and increasingly toxic relationship, from the moment they have decided to leave up until that moment they leave.
Ivy have set out their stall to surprise, innovate and make an emotional connection through their music. With their debut EP, they have made a massive opening statement.
