As his alter-ego BAkeR, Mike Baker is new to the Zealand Music scene. However in his previous endeavours, he has quite a history. And breaking with convention (which isn't really a surprise), he's releasing his debut EP Eternal Now on a Monday.
Before we delve into BAkeR's impressive musical CV, you can take a listen to Eternal Now.
BAkeR has spent many years in the music and restaurant scenes in both New Zealand and Australia.
In the beginning (the early to mid 80's) he ran the import/export division of Australia's Hot Records, working with legendary artists such as The Triffids, Celibate Rifles and Laughing Clowns.
Upon his return to New Zealand, he joined NRA (aka Not Really Anything) and in 1988 the band released the Mud Babies album, which was very popular on student radio.
Baker moved back to Sydney is 1990, managing much-loved Sydney band Glide during the release of their first three EPs, Pretty Mouth, Shuffle off to Buffalo and Wake. (There is a Glide documentary currently in the works).
For the rest of the 1990's, he trained as a chef and ended up as Head Chef at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne, but kept a hand in the entertainment sphere, cooking for the White Stripes, Dandy Warhols, Henry Rollins, Boss Hogg, Lloyd Cole and many others.
At the beginning of last year, BAkeR started recording his EP Eternal Now, with Daniel Hewson (the son of the late Paul Hewson of Dragon), who recorded, and played bass on the EP. Eternal Now was recorded at Stebbing, and we have it on good authority that engineer Steve McGough is rather pleased with how it turned out.
BAkeR Eternal Now EP release party
Saturday March 4th at UFO
2/9 Veronica St, New Lynn Auckland
with The Fuzzies and Dick Blowtorch.
BAkeR will be performing songs from Eternal Now, plus a few surprises, and quite possibly a track or two from his next record, which is currently in the pipeline.
The Fuzzies are an alternative pop band with more hooks than a chilli barb. Big, warm fuzzy tones, and great songs.
Hardcore punk band Dick Blowtorch are well worth catching live too. They cite their influences as Happy Flowers and Sunn O))), which is not a regular combo, but it's about time someone did it.
