For a band that has played in excess of 350 shows, including multiple international and local tours/festivals, the Covid pandemic brought about a huge change. Carb on Carb’s Grounded is due for release on March 31st, with the support of NZ on Air and is the first single from their highly anticipated 3rd album, due out late 2023.

This latest release speaks to these past few years, in volumes. We’ve all certainly been there, stuck, needing more and feeling like we are ‘driving in circles’. Set to make that feeling change, Carb on Carb, are back in a big way, with their signature high energy music and soaring melodies, and with a look to return to their ‘hard working’ touring days. Post the single release, they hit the road, through April, playing venues from Auckland to Dunedin, taking their new music to the doorsteps of fans once again.
“The two-piece managed to sound like five…In some points of their set I was just slackjawed, so impressed with the uniqueness of the songs, and the fullness of the sounds.” - AAA Backstage
Carb on Carb, Nicole Gaffney (vocals, guitar) and James Stuteley (drums), are well known for their tangled, emotional indie rock sound, with emo at its core, and their unique, alternative guitar style. ‘Grounded’ is a solid illustration of this, with its big emphatic sound and Nicole’s strong, illuminating and emotive vocals shining through.
“When Nicole Gaffney steps up on stage she exudes a light that instantly draws people closer”- Ambient Light
The band, a duo from the heart of Aotearoa, although with home hard to define, began their early music days in Te Whanganui ā Tara. They then spent many years, on and off the road, with Tāmaki Makaurau as a base, and now, ready for change, they have settled into life in the creative surrounds of Whanganui. After a refocus in recent years, (with Nicole pouring her energy into Girls Rock Aotearoa and putting on the first ‘To the Front’ programme in Palmerston North and James burying himself in Te Reo, eventually releasing 2 EPs in Te Reo with his side project How Get.), the duo are stoked to be back on the touring circuit with new music and an album to come.
With big plans for 2023 the band continue to take the surprising form of a duo while still delivering a full band sound. With this in mind, the talented pair certainly aren’t to be glanced over, especially with a Top 11 NZ Album chart, multiple #1s on the airplay and single charts, plus countless hours on the global live circuit, under their belt.
Grounded is released on March 31st, by Papaiti Records and with support from NZ on Air. The track was recorded once again by Harry Lilley at what the band believe is one of the country’s most “incredible underrated institutions”, The Stomach, also the venue for their Palmerston North tour date. With finishing touches then put on it in the US, with mixing by Chris Teti (of The World is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die), at Silver Bullet Studios in Connecticut and mastering by Dan Coutant at Sun Room Studios, New York, beautifully rounding things out.
Carb on Carb are stoked to be heading out around the motu once again, on their national single release tour from April 1st, Tickets and more info can be found at Undertheradar.co.nz
