Big Pharma returns with Nine: a structurally unpredictable, downbeat sludger that hits like a brick on a single glazed window. Describable as “Industrial Rock”, “Prog-Punk”, “Post-Rock” orany of those other played-out genre terms. The core trio of Sam Hulme (Bass/Vocals), Ryley Doherty-Lawson (Drum kit) & Lachlan Burne (Guitar) remains, but contributions are welcomed from guests Marcus J Laurence (Saxophone), Dillon Johnson (Synthesiser) & Jay van Dijk (Percussion). Play the single in your home, and the room may fill with the stink of irony. The style of Hulme’s vocal performance ranges from hardcore, animalistic screeches to vivacious hooks that could be compared to the work of pop-heartthrobs like Justin Timberlake. However, whether or not Big Pharma wants to be taken seriously doesn’t feel like the question they want us to be asking. The music simply sounds like a group of friends expanding their creative horizons, and as musicians, further unhinging themselves from the doorframe of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Nine is the second collaboration between Big Pharma & mix engineer Connor Lyttle (Macho Macho, Birdcage). Despite being engineered by the band and recorded at home in sunny Aro Valley, audiences won’t immediately recognize the single to be a totally DIY recording. Through a long journey of learning-by-doing, these musicians have honed their craft. Despite being small fish indeed, this creative collective has managed to produce a consistent stream of uncompromising art, which has improved in quality at an impressive rate. This growth has resulted in the full length LP, Gone Phishing, which is due to be released on the 24th of March. After a plethora of creative disagreements with larger, international record companies, the band has decided to distribute these songs under their own label-name “Pharma Sutra Records”
Much like its predecessor, Nine is accompanied by a lo-fi music video, again directed by Andre Van der Velden, with assistance from Hayden Hawke (both of Bad News Films). In this short, a woman is revealed to have kept her past lovers buried in the backyard—with lots of familiar faces cast among them. Naturally, these lovers come back to life, causing all sorts of problems for her doting husband, resulting in nothing short of a grindhouse-esque “gorefest”. The video can be viewed for free on the band’s YouTube channel here.
In support of their debut full-length LP’s release, Big Pharma will set out to play their first shows outside of their hometown. The Gone Phishing tour is perfect for those who are looking for an authentic Rock music experience. This grueling journey will see Big Pharma stop in Tāmaki Makaurau for a classic romp down in Whammy! Backroom (24th March), then in Tauranga to play a FREE show on what will be their most industrial stage yet - under the harbour bridge (25th March). Then making their way further south, the touring party will stop off in Te Papa-i-Oea at The Stomach for an all ages performance, finally wrapping up with their homecoming show, a classic Te Whanganui-A-Tara house party (1st April). $10 Tickets to all shows are available now at www.undertheradar.co.nz
