Born in Malaysia, raised in Mount Maunganui, the sound of Lizzy Kula is just as eclectic as her upbringing. As a Sri-lankan/Chinese Malaysian that grew up Kiwi, it's no wonder how music came to be the thread that weaved together her identity.
“Music became a constant in my life when everything around me was changing.” - Lizzy Kula
From a young age, Lizzy used listening to music as a means to process life and the emotions that came with it. She soon discovered that ironically the most relatable songs she could find were the ones she wrote herself. What began as a personal therapy has become a creative outlet that she hopes might tell someone's unheard story somewhere.
Inspired by the storytelling of Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers, and the sounds of Stevie Wonder and Alanis Morissette, Lizzy Kula weaves her experiences of highs and heartbreaks into funky basslines, gritty drum breaks, and airy vocals, creating honest and raw songs that will leave you crying, dancing, or both.
Having played bass for artists such as Rachel Leo and Ayla Wesley, it’s time for Lizzy Kula to emerge in her own sound. Lizzy is set to release her debut single I Dreamt About You on the 21st April 2023.
Made with the help of Chris Chetland (Dua Lipa, Lorde, Bebe Rexha), Alex Twidle (Missy, Becca Caffyn, Dead Favours) and her brother, Daniel Kulasingham (Sorry Sorry), Lizzy Kula is set to enter Aotearoa’s music scene with her debut single, I Dreamt About You, a story of the tiresome dynamic of a push-pull relationship. The song sonically builds to create this tension using expansive dynamics, harmonious vocal stacking and driving basslines.
Lizzy describes the constant sense of uncertainty she felt, “I was overthinking to the point where just the thought of them made me exhausted. Writing I Dreamt About You was a way for me to step out of that cycle long enough to realise that it was time for me to choose myself.”
