Today Jazmine Mary shares Seagull,
the intoxicating first single from their forthcoming album Dog.
Aotearoa songwriter, producer and creative force Jazmine Mary returns with a new offering of grief, love and soul-stirring melody. Written in the wake of loss, Seagull (Produced by Wax Chattels' Peter Ruddell)
finds the Auckland Live Best Independent Debut award winner in a deep pool of strings and piano, adorned with trumpet from Elizabeth Stokes (The Beths) and flute courtesy of J.Y. Lee (Yoko-Zuna, Avantdale
Bowling Club), as well as the talents of Jazmine Mary band regulars Peter Ruddell, Dave Khan and Courtney Rodgers.
As with the rest of their sophomore collection Dog, Seagull emerged in the months following Jazmine’s highly lauded 2021 debut The Licking of a Tangerine.
Despite, or perhaps in spite of, the grief and tragedy woven through their music, anyone who’s had the chance to see them live has likely been disarmed by their wry stage chatter and magnetic vulnerability, a virtue just as present in the likes of
Seagull and what’s to come.
Jazmine Mary won’t tell you what Seagull is about or why this album is called Dog. They could well be hiding something from us, but the more probable reason is that they are a responsible artist and know it’s not for them to tell you how to experience what they already have.
Keep an ear to the ground for a tour announcement, and have a good think about your relationship with seagulls.
Seagull lands with a striking visual accompaniment, featuring a high-glam alternate universe Jazmine Mary floating on the bodies of sculpted muscle men - clad only in the starkest of white underwear. It’s giving zebra
patterned high heels and tender sexiness.
Made with support from NZ On Air, the mono-chrome clip was co-directed by Jazmine Mary and Annabel Kean with movement direction by Kyah Dove (iconic
co-founder of Auckland's only queer strip club Body Haus).
No seagulls feature in this video.
