For the second concert of their 2023 season, Bach Musica NZ perform 20th century favourites and a world premiere at the Auckland Town Hall on Sunday 25 June. Following stunning reviews of their most recent St John Passion,
the combined choir and orchestra will showcase their versatility under conductor and Music Director Rita Paczian.
International star guitarist Barkin Sertkaya will perform Vivaldi’s Guitar Concerto and
Rodrigo’s most famous Concerto de Aranjuez. Bach Musica NZ will also present the world premiere of Kaí Pothío, Kaí Máomai by young award-winning New Zealand composer Oliver Bramah. The title poetically translates from Ancient
Greek as I miss and yearn after. Sappho’s fragmented love poems are sung in the original Greek with modern pronunciation.
The concert finishes with Poulenc’s Gloria, featuring a large symphony orchestra, choir and
solo soprano Katherine Winitana - another recent New Zealand competition winner. Composed in 1962, this masterpiece delights with beautiful harmonies, tricky rhythms, sumptuous melodies and is one of the outstanding choral works of the
20th century.
Bach Musica NZ will also host their popular Singing Workshop on 20 May at Somervell Presbyterian Church, an exciting South American experience culminating with a performance of the Misa Criolla by Argentinian composer
Ariel Ramirez, famous for its tango rhythms and beautiful melodies.
