21-year-old New-Zealand artist Muroki shares his funk/soul-inspired new single, Watching Movies, out everywhere now on Olive Records via Universal New Zealand. The new track was produced by Dave Hammer (Lime Cordiale, Baker Boy), and follows on from his earworm of a single Sweet Lime, which was released in February, and picked up acclaim from the likes of Raydar Magazine, Rolling Stone and Sniffers.
Speaking on the meaning behind the new single Muroki explains; "Watching Movies is a modern funk/soul number inspired by the likes of James Brown and Childish Gambino. Intertwined in the bass face riffs, runs a simple metaphor comparing my relationship to a movie, which then comes to the conclusion that watching movies is a lot easier than watching your partner leave.’
Muroki’s smooth, roots based sound mixes his Raglan background of skating pavements and surfing breaks with inspiration from local music, his Kenyan background and sounds from the streets of North and South America. His breakout hit Wavy topped the NZ charts and the breezy soul-pop jam Surfin’ became a Triple J playlist fave and was nominated by GQ as the single “..soundtrack of Summer."
Muroki's vocals catch your undivided attention, his voice a hypnotic instrument effortlessly caressing melodies to melt even the toughest of us. Release after release, Muroki continues to show us that he is someone you don't want to be late on, and he is just getting started.
