Although Ivy only released their debut single Stranger at the end of last year, they have fully established themselves as a must-see act on the Dunedin music scene. Their EP For The Sake of It provided an opportunity for the band to showcase their breadth of musical ideas and a willingness to take risks and be unconventional. Their new single Heartless continues to push the boundaries.
Heartless shines a light on the issue of abuse and violence in relationships. It is a deeply intense and soulful rock song with a captivating melody. It begins with a perspective on the struggle of the biblical figure Mary Magdalene, where her circumstances are still relevant to modern domestic assault and abuse. The song puts a focus on the importance of reflection as a society but more importantly for individuals to better understand and confront the terrible abuses that people face in relationships.
The song switches moods as it transitions from the intense and forceful into a deeply romantic and loving second chorus, embracing the idea that being in a relationship makes a person want to be the best version of themselves, yet contrasts this with the fear of causing accidental harm to a significant other.
The song then concludes with a pulsating and vigorous outro, fully showcasing Jesse Hanan’s dynamic vocal range and the band’s aptitude for musical spectacle.
