Wellington-based 3-piece Vorsen are relative newcomers when you consider their pedigree, but they're gaining momentum, and fans, as they traverse Aotearoa on their third nationwide tour.
The band's music is based around the songs of John Halvorsen. A genuine trailblazer, he co-founded The Gordons, was in Skeptics, and remains a core member of Bailter Space.
Vorsen's next stop is at Moon 1 in Wellington next Saturday May 27th, and this show is particularly special as Peter Jefferies is supporting in a very rare live appearance.
Over the last 30 years, Halvorsen has been writing songs, unheard until now, and fans of his other bands will certainly not be disappointed. And fans of his other bands will love his new material. Vorsen's musical landscape covers a wide range of genres and periods that are hard to pigeon-hole, but a general description might use the words melodic, heavy, emotive, grungy, space rock and even shoegaze.
Bringing their own exceptional skills to the band are Steve Cochrane (The Uncools, Skank Attack, Wazzo Ghoti) on drums and Hayden Ellis (Deaf) on bass.
Halvorsen’s discography over a 43-year period includes over 20 records. The first album was in 1981, by The Gordons, which received the inaugural Independent Music NZ Classic Record award as part of the Taite Music Prize awards in 2013, and on its re-release in 2021 went to No. 3 in the New Zealand album chart.
