South Auckland Based Artist Fable Releases his New Single 'Popstar Is Manix'

26 May 2023 - 0 Comments

Fable kick starts his 2023 with a new Māori alt-rock classic. Off the back of representing Aotearoa at the JBL x Martin Garrix Music Academy in Amsterdam, Fable has released his latest single Popstar in Manix.

The gritty and hard-hitting track focuses on breaking stereotypes and raising the popstar status of South Auckland and the South Pacific.

Fable is an alternative Māori artist from Papakura. He first came on the scene in 2019 with eerie single Beware, and ever since then he’s been paving a lane of his own within the alternative music scene in Aotearoa New Zealand. 2021 saw singles Karakia and Let Me In flood student radio airwaves as the prelude to his second EP
I’ll See You In Hawaiki, and landed Fable a Student Radio Network (SRN) nomination for ‘Favourite Single of the Year’ for 2021.

Speaking of the new single, Fable says, Popstar in Manix is a special track for me because it’s the first track venturing into the alt rock space, which I really love and enjoy. For me, the track is about flipping expectations. Manukau in South Auckland or ‘Manix’, is a place we don’t normally associate pop stars with, but I feel like we have our own type of popstars down here. We value the community and whānau, and to me, that’s true popstar status. So I want to pay homage to that”

The support of his local alternative circuit also saw single Karakia have an 8-week stint in 95bfm’s Top 10. 2022’s single releases Easier and Close2home also continue to do the rounds on student radio across the motu as Fable champions all things local and homegrown. 2023 has seen Fable get hand-picked by Martin Garrix as one of the 40 global artists to participate in the first ever JBL x Martin Garrix Music Academy in Amsterdam.

Fable’s ability to push the boundaries of what indigenous Aotearoa music can be, alongside his willingness to share the realities of everyday New Zealanders, has helped him capture the hearts of New Zealand radio and everywhere else in between.
