Vincent H.L. is proud to share his sophomore solo album, Golden Sun, through Tāmaki Makaurau label 1:12 Records. On his latest album, Vincent H.L. writes what he knows, tales of stoned isolation, outsider observations of rank outsiders, days hanging out or driving around with nowhere to be and nothing to do, sun-kissed reflections of new love and night time laments of love's lost longings.
Growing up on the fringes is inevitable when your parents are commercial veggie growers in 1980's Kumeu and you are of mixed Chinese and European whakapapa. While the kids in the near, but so far suburbs run as neighbourhood packs or hang out at the local mall, your folks are working, always working, and you've got to make your own fun/trouble.
The instrumentation on Golden Sun was tracked by Vincent, except the added bass and slide guitar by his “consigliere” Matt Short (Magic Factory, Vietnam War, Sola Rosa, The Feelers) and was completed at their awesome but short-lived studio / clubhouse “The Panther Room”. Old mates James Dansey (Sneaks, Hang Loose, Golden Geese) and Jamie Lee Smith (Crap Date, Princess Chelsea) added sweetly wacked-out backing vocals on several tracks, but otherwise it is a solo effort from Vincent, who builds the sound, track by track.
“On Golden Sun I have really gotten into guitars. Hanging out with Matt (Short) had a real influence on that. I wanted to move on from the doom-metal country of Weird Days (his debut album on 1:12) and really pull the songs out of the sludge”. -Vincent H.L.
