B O K E H releases new single 'take me to your sea' along with album 'room 42'

07 July 2023 - 0 Comments

B O K E H, the artistic alias of Chloë Lewer, is a singer, producer, and video creator hailing from New Zealand, currently based in Berlin, Germany.

Her latest album, entitled room 42, is a record that B O K E H wrote, performed, engineered, and produced herself. The album was crafted in her Berlin studio and on the road, with its name derived from the latitude where the songwriting process began - 42°S in her home country of Aotearoa (New Zealand), as well as a mysterious hotel room where the production of the record started during lockdown in 2020.

The album serves as a culmination of B O K E H's desire to explore themes of human warmth, sensuality, tenderness, intimacy, self-love, and liberation from self-imposed fears.

Listeners can expect a modern, cinematic, electro-indie pop sound with a nostalgic 90's twist. B O K E H skilfully blends various genres to create a unique sonic experience, with her confessional vocals ranging from soft and vulnerable to sassy and bold. Throughout the album, there is a consistent theme of romance and desire, often accompanied by a touch of inescapable melancholy.

The soundscape of room 42 is composed of analogue synths, organs, a string ensemble, choirs, electric guitar, playful basslines, and sexy saxophone solos. The beats draw inspiration from 80's/90's Hip-Hop and RnB, incorporating samples created from field recordings collected from the streets and everyday household items during the lockdowns, such as a bread tin.

The standout track, take me to your sea, delves into the concept of sacrificing oneself for lust and the longing to be consumed by another's desire. B O K E H self-directed the music video, as she does for all of her videos on the album.

Notably, the album features collaborations with TikTok viral Canadian rapper Lex Leosis, Swiss punk-rocker Bonaparte, and the Gold platinum German songwriter, Ruuth.

Influences include James Blake, L’impératrice, Okay Kaya, Beach House, Soko, Timi Yuro, Karen Dalton, Air, Kate Bush, Imogen Heap, Weval and Billie Eilish.
