International and Industry Action
Congratulations to Fat Freddy’s Drop who took away the Best Producer award for ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’ at the technical awards ceremony for the 2009 Vodafone New Zealand Music awards on September 2. The Tuis for the Best Engineer (Andrew Buckton for ‘The Brave Don't Run’, Midnight Youth) and Best Cover Art (Ruban Nielson for ‘Screens’, The Mint Chicks) were also presented. Nominees for the remaining awards, which will be handed out at a ceremony at Vector Arena on October 8, were also announced, with Smashproof picking up five nominations. Other nominees from the IMNZ crew are P-Money ft Vince Harder, Fat Freddy's Drop, The Black Seeds, Don McGlashan and The Seven Sisters, Savage, Boh Runga, Ladi 6, Sola Rosa, The Woolshed Sessions, Antiform and Parachute Band. These, along with the international achievement award, will be announced at the main awards at Vector Arena in Auckland on October 8. The legacy award will be presented to Ray Columbus and the Invaders, who will be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. No finalists were announced for the highest selling NZ single, highest selling NZ album and the radio airplay record of the year awards which will also be presented on October 8.
In the NZ Music charts for the week of August 24, Fly My Pretties soared to the top with their third album, displacing the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘The E.N.D’; and Opensouls’ ‘Standing in the Rain’ landed at #8. Last week, Tiki’s Always On My Mind became jointly the second longest running chart single of all time in New Zealand, at 54 weeks tying with late country star Freddie Fender’s Before The Next Teardrop Falls – if Tiki can hang in there for five more months, he’ll match New Order’s Blue Monday which notched up an amazing 74 weeks on the chart. Maisey Rika is amongst the finalists (along with Maitreya and Te Aratoi) in the 2009 APRA Maioha award; this will be announced along with the 2009 Silver Scroll Award and SOUNZ Contemporary Award recipients at the Christchurch Town Hall on September 17.
On the back of their critically acclaimed new album ‘Find Me Before I Die A Lonely Death Dot Com’, Minuit are working on a new video concept for their single Aotearoa and they need New Zealand's help. The track contains the lyric "You and me, we are a New Zealand", and for the video, the band are giving New Zealanders a chance to show who they are by submitting photos to feature in the video - be it a photo of them in their town, with their family or friends, on their favourite beach, showing their tattoo, or just them - whatever they think shows a bit of who they are in one shot. More information regarding the project can be found in Minuit’s Facebook group (Facebook: Minuittheband); the deadline is 18 September. "At first I really bucked against wanting to sing 'New Zealand' in a song," says Ruth Carr. "I felt like it was kind of lame, or cheesy, or embarrassing on some level, but then I thought of the hundreds of songs in the world with other countries and street names or landmarks in them, and I thought - I live here, I'm allowed to sing about it. Now, when I sing it live, I kind of enjoy the funny 'New Zealand-ish' of it; the cultural cringe of it. This is us. We are a new New Zealand if we want to be, it's our choice how we want this to go. Here is the song. It's called Aotearoa."
Die! Die! Die! have just flown to the UK where they play a few London shows this month - including the Offset festival and an Artrocker showcase - before embarking on a huge European tour, visiting France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the UK and then heading to CMJ in New York. Much loved metallers Sinate recently left NZ for Europe and are at the moment in Berlin, Germany, recording and playing shows. Earlier this year they welcomed Matt Fawcett (ex Damned Age) to the ranks on lead guitar duty, and the band are writing new material for their third album. Surf City are listed as having one of the "Anticipated albums of Winter 2009" by US Magazine Under the Radar, who featured the band on July 30. And releasing their first studio album in 8 years (Arch Hill released their live album ‘Mashed’ last year) is the Clean, with their album ‘Mister Pop’ due out on the 7th of September - the day after on Merge in the USA and Morr Music in Europe. Ladi6’s album ‘Time Is Not Much’ was released by leading independent Japanese label P-vine Records last week.
An initiative by poster company Phantom Billstickers puts poems by New Zealand and American poets on the streets as A1 posters. The first four posters were launched in Auckland 2 June by Tusiata Avia, James Milne (aka Lawrence Arabia) and Michele Leggott. Posters will go up in 13 New Zealand cities and in Nashville, Tennessee, where the company is also active - poster poems by Bill Direen, David Eggleton, Michele Leggott, Frankie McMillan, Josie McQuail and Otis Mace went national and then (Nashville, Sydney, Paris) international. The poems will change monthly and the project will run for six months. Phantom Billstickers' second selection of poster poems was launched at Wellington Trawling Sea Market and at the National Library of New Zealand in association with the announcement of the second NZ Poet Laureate, Cilla McQueen. Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 are eating up the USA, with invitations to play more shows rolling in all the time. So far they’ve been winning over fans all over the US, from the Viper Room to the Roller Derby in Houston; and now it's time for them to buckle into recording their second album. And today (September 7) is the day of the UK release of P-Money’s single Everything ft. Vince Harder.
Trillion reports that 150000+ people have now seen the video for Say No To The Vaccine on YouTube; and there is a new song/video in the saga of songs about things that are poisonous to the human body: Water Crimes (‘the fluoride song’) featuring Tono, following in the same vein as 'the aspartame song', 'the cellphone song' and 'the vaccine song'; also keep an eye out for the new Trillion video, Cold Touch Of Dawn, plus the new video for 1997 track The Wreckers Light (a collaboration with Jody’s Dad David Lloyd) is now on YouTube. Issue 10 of online magazine discounderworld.com features Jody on pages 64-73; and you can vote for him to appear in the physical version of the magazine at the end of the year. Jody’s ‘Loops Of Love’ CD Launch/Exhibition which ran in Christchurch in May is scheduled to open in Melbourne at the Monkey Bar on September 30 as part of The Fringe Festival.

New Release Alerts
Jealous Itch’s debut album 'Scratch' has arrived; the band comes to you with a powerful arsenal of combined predecessors: Stonehenge, Confessor, Adrenalin and Heavy Duty all well known, hard hitting Rock/Metal bands spawning Jealous Itch, who are fuelled by the guitar prowess of Anton Jelicich, one-time axeman for Stonehenge. With the addition of Sean Taylor of Confessor on vocals and Grant Stensness of Adrenalin, Jealous Itch launched their official live onslaught as support act to Def Leppard in November 2008 after only seven days together as a full line up. You can head to the King’s Arms in Auckland on Friday September 11 for the band’s album release party.
In time for the build-up to summer, Tahuna Breaks present their second album ‘Black, Brown & White’ two years on from the release of their acclaimed debut ‘Reflections’ (which hit the IMNZ charts at #3, and won a Juice TV Music Award for Best Roots/Electronica Video for the Real Life video). Recorded with the infamous Dr Lee Prebble at the Surgery in Wellington, the new album features a mix of soul, funk, blues, roots and reggae; and the band is celebrating the release with a nationwide tour.
After branching out with their individual projects, the two founding fathers of Christchurch Hip Hop/Soul Collective Solaa - Isaac Aesili and Dave Wright - are releasing their respective albums on the same day, 7 September (today!). For Isaac it is his solo album ‘Eye See’ and for Dave, the album with his new band Electric Wire Hustle (alongside Mara TK and Myele Manzanza). Isaac Aesili and The Vision Band and Electric Wire Hustle will be celebrating all their hard work by touring a multi-media, multi-sensational show in 5 centres - Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Queenstown and Christchurch - in early September.
The second entry in Siltbreeze’s reissue series of cult underground NZ group Axemen, ‘Scary! Part III’, originally saw light as a cassette-only release in ‘89. Most bands and fans in the Christchurch and Dunedin scenes at the time could tell you how the prolific Axemen blazed through the ‘80s with new cassettes seemingly available on an almost daily basis. A different story would be told by all – though everyone would agree Scary! is some of the band’s most intriguing work. After 20 years and counting, ‘Scary! Part Three’ refuses to be aptly pigeonholed; the Axemen mean business and their business is mean: “Be Very Afeared, Cause This Ain't No Beard & You Have An Aversion To Clean”.
The debut album from Breakin Wreckwordz’ Tyson Tyler, ‘Reality Cheque’, is out on September 28, containing 16 gravy-for-the-ears tracks featuring appearances by Pieter T, Red Eye Society, Young Sid, Monstah Ganja, Flowz, Ethical and Cyphanetik, with production by way of a blend between inhouse producer Exile, southern influenced bangers from Yorel, and the classic boom bap styling of U.S producer Jig Dagod. Tyson will be celebrating the release of his album at Khuja Lounge Wednesday 30 September. Following on from seminal albums ‘Seen’, ‘All Played Out’ and ‘Heard, Tom Bailey AKA International Observer is about to return with eleven more slices of delectable dub-drenched delights - entitled ‘Felt’ - on October the 5th via the Dubmissions label and Rhythmethod distribution.
Live Dates for Your Diary

These bands will be joined by newcomers Electric Wire Hustle, UK reggae remixer JStar, party starters Sunshine Soundsystem and internationally renowned Detroit native-turned New Zealand favourite Recloose. Held in the beautiful surroundings of Coromandel’s Ohuka Farm, Coromandel Gold is 3 kilometres from Whitianga town centre and a stone’s throw from Buffalo Beach. Rhythm and Vines have announced the second roll-out of acts to play the three day festival this New Year, including Opensouls and An Emerald City from the IMNZ whanau, joining internationals Moby, Editors, 2manydjs, Future of the Left, White Rabbits, Dane Rumble, Ajax (Sweat It Out) Bang Gang (Doom & Hoodrat) and Emerson Todd (AUS), plus a swag of other local acts and DJs.

And for the South Island a massive lineup has been announced for Phat 10 at Inangahua on the South Island’s West Coast, with The Upbeats, The Black Seeds, Concord Dawn, Kora, Tiki : DJ/Acoustic Set, Salmonella Dub With Whirimako Black, State Of Mind Live With Mc Woody, Bulletproof, Olmecha Supreme, Optimus Gryme & Billy Fluid amongst the local representatives and international acts including Pendulum (DJ set), DJ Hype & Daddy Earl, Black Sun Empire, Bad Company UK & MC Lowqui and Spor.
Parachute 2010 is the festival’s 20th birthday, and the crew are planning some major celebrations over the four day festival (January 29 – February 1). Over the past two months they’ve announced one Festival headliner per week via their Facebook/Twitter pages, the website, E-News updates and on Life FM; this week’s international announcement is San Diego rockers Switchfoot. The Parachute Roadshow kicks off this week too; the first instalment was on Wednesday in New Plymouth and they visit Hastings on Friday and Wellington on Saturday.
Boh Runga is currently in the US and will play the Hotel Café in LA on September 23; then she’s on her way home for the Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour, an annual live music tour through New Zealand's magnificent chapels and churches. In 2004, Civic Events produced a national acoustic church tour for Bic Runga around New Zealand, the idea springing from a show Bic had played in the Union Chapel in London in 2003. This is now morphing into an annual event, and the line-up for October 2009 features Boh teaming up with Greg Johnson (also currently LA-based); the duo will be performing their own and each other's songs together. Joining Greg and Boh on the bill will be former Zed frontman and now solo hitmaker Nathan King and a bright new talent in the form of young Auckland singer/songwriter Lydia Cole.
Following the success of the inaugural Pick it Up Youth Concert in July, Dawn Raid and the Glass Packaging Forum have announced a second concert for October 1st. On the bill are Nesian Mystik, Scribe, J. Williams, Savage, DJ Sir-Vere, Sweet & Sour, DZIAH, Anonymouz, Devolo, Sweet and Irie and Che Fu – this will be the only time you can see all these artists for a mere $10.00. A new addition to the October show is a Dance Crew Battle: fresh from the World Hip Hop International Dance Competition in Las Vegas, World Champion dance crew Sweet & Sour prepare for their biggest challenge to date….to battle DZIAH. 3,000 kids filled the Telstraclear Pacific Centre in Manukau for the first Pick It Up Youth Concert in July; the gig was created for the under 18’s by Dawn Raid and the Glass Packaging Forum, who wanted to produce a school holiday event in a safe environment with a family friendly ticket price. Pick It Up, the youth brand initiated by the GPF, is focused on teaching the younger generation about recycling and caring for your environment. Sweet and Irie continue their nationwide ‘Localize It’ album release tour later this month with shows in Tauranga and Whakatane.
Dunedin-born and bred musician Hannah Curwood has just released ‘The Blind Love’ EP. Following on from her ’07 debut album, ‘Sky Above Horse Below’, this new EP unfurls like smoke, the songs given space to have lives of their own, growing organically in Dale Cotton’s Audioworkshop in Dunedin. Appearing alongside Hannah on the EP are Graeme Downes (The Verlaines), Tom Healy, Darren Stedman and backing singers Rainy McMaster and Geva Downey from Haunted Love. You can also hear Hannah’s haunting voice on the new albums by both Dimmer and The Checks. OdESSA, one of New Zealand’s most electrifying live acts of recent times, has decided to call it quits. After seven years, over four hundred sweat-drenched shows, four guitarists, two albums, and many, many tours up and down the country - not to mention countless split pairs of pants - the four current members are closing the chapter with what they do best - one last round of live shows, hitting Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.
Christchurch band Tainted will be supporting Ohio heavyweights Chimaira when they return to New Zealand in January 2010 to destroy stages and drive audiences into a frenzy. And speaking of the Garden City, Christchurch will once again stage the South Island's biggest multi-stage festival when Southern Amp 09 kicks into life on Thursday 12th November from 4.30pm ‘til midnight at Westpac Arena in Addington. Amp-fans will not have to freak out about work or Uni the next day either with Friday 13th November being a holiday and the start of the Canterbury long weekend! This year’s Southern Amp will feature 2 massive main stages standing side-by-side, providing non-stop live music. There will also be a 3rd stage featuring some of the best local bands and DJs, plus an outdoor area for bars, food stalls etc. Joining the eclectic mix on Southern Amp so far this year are Kora, An Emerald City and The Veils from the IMNZ whanau, along with the Buzzcocks, Salmonella Dub, Grinspoon and Mammal.
The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra are chuffed to announce their national tour in support of a brand new record, ‘The Dreaming EP’ – and the tour will include towns that haven’t yet hosted the popular strummers. With two CDs already under their belts, ‘The Dreaming EP’ was recorded at Auckland’s Roundhead Studios and features crowd favourite Africa, The Coral’s Dreaming of You, Prince’s I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man and the Dean Martin hit That’s Amore, plus the WIUO’s salute to the 60th anniversary of the wartime classic Blue Smoke, which was written by Ruru Karaitiana during WW2 and became New Zealand’s first official pop song in 1949. In the liner notes for the EP, painter Grahame Sydney, a fan of the ukulele and occasional guest performer with the band, writes: “A concert by the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra is transporting stuff”.
Head Like A Hole continue their nationwide tour with Luger Boa and a range of local guests, rescheduled from June/July following Booga Beazley’s collision with an axe, with the band whistle-stopping in Hamilton, Auckland and Wellington for the remainder of the tour. It’s time for the ‘Dr Boondigga & The Big BW’ album shakedown as Fat Freddy’s Drop return to the stage for two shows only in Wellington and Auckland. Fitchie at Freddy’s mission control says to expect tracks from Dr Boondigga, some FFD classics - and new experiments direct from Freddy’s beat kitchen. For a taste of the band jamming Shiverman, the trance thriller on ‘Dr Boondigga and The Big BW’, check Fat Freddy's Drop TV to view an exclusive and epic 17 minute clip filmed live at The Roundhouse, London in late 2008.
The Midnights are fresh from finishing their debut album and will be taking the stage with old friends Cornerstone Roots and special guests Dubhead and Second Chapter for a one-off show at the Rising Sun on September 11 – it’s Big Reggae Party night, a joyous night of ‘swing and dine’ and underground NZ reggae. And to celebrate the release of their Top 10 album 'Standing in the Rain', Opensouls are heading off around the country on a 7 date tour. Check our Tour Dates to see if you can catch them playing gorgeous new tunes from the album in your hometown, including the singles Hold You Close and Standing in the Rain.
