Sixties classic She’s a Mod has been given a reworking by The Mint Chicks.
The recording follows the announcement that Ray Columbus and The Invaders is to be honoured with a New Zealand Herald Legacy Award at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and inducted by RIANZ and APRA into the NZ Music Hall of Fame.
The digital single is being released on October 8, immediately following the Vodafone Music Awards, and will be available from Vodafone, iTunes, Telecom and Digirama stores.
All profits from the sale of the single go to the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, a charitable organisation that helps special needs children communicate through music.
The Mint Chicks Ruban Nielson reckons ‘She’s A Mod’ is great pop song.
“We had huge fun with it, working in elements that we liked, while staying true to the pop sensibilities. To be able to release the single and raise funds for a deserving charity is a great thing for us.
“And of course we’re really happy that we can be part of the tribute to Ray and The Invaders.”
Ray Columbus says: “This recording brings the New Zealand Herald Legacy Award full circle. The whole idea of a legacy is that you have left something for others to follow, and the fact that The Mint Chicks are singing the song at the awards and then releasing the single reinforces that legacy. It’s a wonderful thing.
“The Mint Chicks are an edgy band, I really like the group, and look forward to seeing what they come up with the song.”
She’s a Mod first hit New Zealand charts in 1964, topped the charts in New Zealand and Australia, and preceded the recording by Ray Columbus and The Invaders of New Zealand’s first ever home grown music award winning song, ‘Till We Kissed’.
Since then She’s a Mod has been rerecorded by punk group The Terrorways and hip hop duo Double J and Twice the T.
An official video will be created from footage of The Mint Chicks’ performance of the track at the Awards and will be on screens from 13 October.
The Vodafone NZ Music Awards take place in five days time, Thursday October 8 at Vector Arena, Auckland.
