Fly My Pretties Fan gets Tattoo of Fantail Motif - Interview

01 November 2009 - 0 Comments

Background:
Paul Williams from Christchurch moved to NZ from the UK in May 2000. He originally came over for a one-year working holiday but loved it so much that he never went back! He has just finished getting a Fly My Pretties piwaiwaka (fantail) tattoo to honor the local group and to tie his roots to Aotearoa. The tattoo artist is Karla Hansen from Streetwise in Newmarket. Karla has also tattooed musician Hollie Smith who featured in the second Fly My Pretties incarnation The Return of Fly My Pretties (2006).

1. Why did you decide to get this tattoo done?
“I always wanted a piwaiwaka tattoo, it’s something I’ve wanted for years since living in NZ. As it’s one of the more iconic NZ native birds I feel it’s a good way to tie my roots to Aotearoa and express my love for my favourite kiwi group Fly My Pretties at the same time!”

2. Is this your first tattoo?
“No this is actually my sixth tattoo but it is definitely the biggest by far.”

3. How did you become such a dedicated Fly My Pretties fan?
“A friend I met in Christchurch leant me The Return of Fly My Pretties to check out and I was instantly hooked, it was like nothing I had heard before and it seemed to show NZ musical talent in a new way. I continued to share the album around and when I heard Fly My Pretties were doing the new shows this year I spread the word, brought along a few people who had never been before and now all my friends and work colleagues are hooked too!”

4. How many Fly My Pretties concerts have you been to?
“Two, The Return of Fly My Pretties Grand Tour in Christchurch in 2006, and Fly My Pretties A Story in Christchurch in May this year.”

5. What were your impressions from the latest Fly My Pretties show, A Story?
“Fly My Pretties A Story was very impressive, especially the way the songs fitted so well with the narrative and the animations, it was spectacular. Seeing Dick Weir on stage was a real highlight. My 68 year old mother came along and she said it was one of the best shows she’s seen in her life. Just amazing.”

6. How are you feeling about the upcoming final Encore Shows?
“It’s going to be awesome, I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll be going along to the Wellington show which will be the last show, so it might be a little bit sad, but overall I’m really excited!”

7. Who is your favourite Fly My Pretties member?
“Anna Coddington, she blew me away at the latest tour with her vocal talent and guitar skills.”

8. What is your favourite Fly My Pretties song?
“I have a few but ‘Garden’ is my favourite, it’s beautiful and evokes so much emotion.”
